I, Jake Schoeder, video recorded the blowing of the Titanic's whistles on February 1999 at Union Depot, St. Paul, MN. First whistle blowing is at the very beginning and the second blowing is at 1:32 in this video. jakeschoeder@gmail.com
(from The Free Library by Farlex) Thousands of people standing in the streets of St Paul, Minnesota, responded with cheers, applause and whistles after the ten-second blasts, which sounded about two minutes apart. The free whistle-blowing ceremony was held outside the old Union Depot in St. Paul, MN, where other artifacts from the Titanic are on display. Police estimated the crowd on the cold but sunny afternoon to be between 80,000 and 100,000 - much higher than the 2,000 to 3,000 organisers had predicted.

My daughter in law and I were there that day. We stood for hrs. in the crowd in freezing below 0 cold waiting for that whistle to blow. They were not sure they would work because they had not tried them yet so they would not damage anything in case. When that whistle blew I think all of us had shivers (not from the cold) and cried. It was the most moving thing I had ever experienced on that day and shared it with my daughter in law. The sound went right thru us. An historic moment in our lives for sure. My body was all covered in chills after hearing this. Whether one shows interest in Titanic or, they still can't deny how impactful the sinking really was. Even I never really understood Titanic's impact until I heard the whistle and the moment I did, my heart sank because I realized that by calling the Titanic overrated, I was disrespecting all the people who died onboard. This whistle served as the voices of the dead and allowed them to finally be heard by the society of today. In other words, it was like a lost generation connecting with the world we live in today.

I was there to hear the whistle too. I was six so I don’t remember it too vividly, but one thing that really stuck with me is something my older brother - who has special needs and a deep passion for the Titanic - did and said. He cried when he heard the whistle..while folding his hands, and looking at the sky he said “The last time this whistle was used, over 1,500 people died.” When I think back on that and truly think about his words, this moment was indeed something that shouldn’t have been received with many cheers and yelling..because he’s right, 1,500 people died when this was lasted used, this should have been more of a time of remembrance and reflection, than cheers and joy.

Thanks for posting this. It is remarkable that her voice can still be heard. I remember reading about how when the whistles were recovered, the middle one sparkled in the sunlight like it was waiting to be found so that it could do what it was designed to do once more. There are many perspectives on whether this occasion should have been joyous or solemn. I can only say that I know of one family who lost a relative on that ship and they felt joyous. They weren’t there, obviously, to observe the send off of the maiden voyage, but letters indicate that there was such excitement surrounding it that this moment in MN felt that it must have been similar. She was a beautiful ship, magnificent to look upon, if her voice can still be heard after all this time, then her spirit remains unsinkable.

It is beautiful to see everyone commenting about the Titanic like she's not just a ship, an object, but a person. At the time, she symbolized human supremacy. Humans are capable of everything. If they are not capable of doing something today, they will be able to in the future. Humans created a Queen of the ocean. She was such a beautiful ship. She still is today on her seabed. She had a huge impact when she sank and revolutionized the world of navigation by installing better rules and precautions. Her death was not in vain. She's still so important today. It is beautiful to see people still remembering her and being interested in her. She symbolizes dreams, hopes, ambitions but also death, ice, pain and suffering. Life. To hear her whistles again symbolizes rebirth.

At this ceremony, they used air instead of steam and with less pressure to make sure it didn't break because of how old it was and how long it had stayed at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. So pretty much, if you intensify this sound (aka make it sound like it's using more pressure) then that's probably what it sounded like.

Yes, that does sound like an ocean liner whistle. I'm so glad these were salvaged and can be operated.

The most incredible experience I have had. I have always been interested in the Titanic and the sinking. I went to see A Night To Remember when it was shown in Radio City Music Hall, N.Y.C.. I was a young girl and will never forget the movie. The Theatre was packed and you could hear crying as the Titanic sank the sound of it going down was very palpable. Remember this was before surround sound and enhanced effects of today. It was a black and white movie also. Not all of the information of the sinking was accurate as today thru research and finding the wreck determined what happened. Still was heart rending to see. Never will forget it.

I was only just born when this happened (assuming this takes place on the 18th or after), but I'm glad it was documented for me to see and fully understand the impact 19 years later.

Incredible to hear this as it would have sounded when the Titanic left Southampton.
@patmcgroin1418

+Alex Gillmor It doesnt sound anything near what it would have sounded mainly because the whistle was operated with compressed air and not steam. the whistle had been in such a fragile state after years at the bottom of the sea that if they actually used it the way it was supposed to then it probably would have blown apart or crumbled in front of everyone.

Don't forget they also ran it at half of the pressure it was designed to. Originally they ran at 200 PSI full steam pressure but if I remember right they ran this one at just 100 PSI of compressed air. Would sound much more musical at a full 200 PSI and with steam than it does in this video at 100 PSI with compressed air

Milner62 Someone should build a replica of the original and blast that mother at full volume.

well clive did try to get it rebuilt but they (the survivors and families) were opposed due to the nature of its demise.

Excellent to hear them. They sound nothing like the would really have sounded thought using steam and at full pressure. Still, this is an incredible event. I watched them being tested on youtube and shed a tear when I heard them first.

Titanic was a steam ship. Steam powered the engines, it drove the generators that made electricity and it was also pumped through the whistles so these are steam whistles. Here they were fed with low-pressure compressed air to avoid damaging them. If you knew what an air horn looked like, you would know the difference.

While these whistles were from the Titanic, the sound we just heard was not her true voice. The real tone would have been lower, probably about an octave lower, as the whistles here were blown with compressed air, but in her service life, they were blown with steam.

@DownundaThunda
@DownundaThunda 11 месяцев назад
@@jiogcyihsugyiocjfdoivhphvw6821 No, I didn't forget that, nor was it relevant to my comment. All I said was that the whistle we heard was not how they would have sounded during the service life. I didn't even suggest they should or could have used steam for this demonstration. It would have been cool, but I do understand that for this single demonstration, it would have been impractical to use steam.
