There are a variety of options when it comes to outdoor cookware. Titanium has a variety of benefits that other cookware doesn't offer. Matt Mercer of the Black Hat Bushcraft Channel here on RU-vid walks you through the pros and the cons of titanium and various details about the new PathfinderTi line of cookware. When ultralight is the name of the game, titanium is very hard to beat. So if you enjoy hiking over distance, or simply want to lessen the load in your pack, titanium is a great option and the PathfinderTi line of outdoor cookware will not disappoint.

Perfect video! I love that you taught us how titanium relates to the other cooking materials and went over the pro's and con's of each. I just picked up a titanium grill as soon as it was released, thanks to this video.

Great speaking skills, Matt! I love Pathfinder kits and own a couple sets along with several Toaks titanium kits as well. Titanium is definitely a weight saver. The way you set up your lid, cup and bottle in the mesh is exactly how I arrange my set but along with the fish mouth spreader I add a "hot lips", a P-38 can opener and a small Bic or Crocs lighter. My OCD issue keeps me organized. Before I secure the lid on my fry pan I like to put a small towel, scrubber, and a bear bag kit all secured in a snack or sandwich ziploc bag. If I take a kettle to boil water I do the same to use whatever available space the utensil offers. I do use possibles pouches by Malcolm but they are for other than cooking kits or items, e.g. headlamp, small flashlights, batteries, etc. Cast iron skillets, pots and the rectangular sheet for multiple items to be cooked, i.e. eggs, bacon, pancakes, french toast are all great but I use them overland camping only.

Well done explanation. Thank you. I own several pieces of titanium cookware and some stainless. I have used aluminum cook pots, but tend to shy away from aluminum because of the greater possibility of health risks. Titanium is actually heavier than aluminum. Two pots, made to the same dimensions of the two materials, titanium would be the heavier. Titanium is much stronger than aluminum, cookware can be made much thinner, so the weights tend to even out for a given size of container. For longevity and possibility of health risks, titanium is the clear choice. Titanium is easily the winner for anyone who only boils water for outdoor meals like a lot of through hikers and such. I really enjoy your informative videos, Matt. Be well.

I own every piece of stainless steel cook set pieces that are offered from the Pathfinder/Self Reliance Outfitters website. But I'm very interested in the new line of titanium gear. I may have to check them out. It does seem that the titanium gear is definitely made for the single person. Kind of small, but would be great for the single person overnighter. Thanks for the heads up.

I see and major design flaw. The cup DOES NOT have Holes for use with a bail Bottle Hanger, nor does the cup lid have slots to allow the use of the Bottle Hanger if you drilled holes in the cup. I go out and do solo hiking, camping and Bushcrafting and everything I carry has multiple functions and not being able the use the cup as a small bushpot reducing the multi functionally of my equipment. ONE LAST THING: for the 99 dollars the this Ti set you can buy both the 32 oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle and Nesting Cup Set AND THE 64oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle and Nesting Cup Set, and save a dollar in the process.
@asmith7876
@asmith7876 3 года назад
Gotta pick priorities. You want less weight you’ll have less money. Now you have a good choice! I do kind of agree about the holes though. Could be remedied by various means. I wonder if it was simply a manufacturing decision, control the price or something?
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 3 года назад
Hi John, the feature you are referring to on the stainless cup and lid is one of my favorites too. That adds a lot to that stainless set in my opinion. I think that the design intent of the TI set however was really more targeted to using on a rocket stove or an alcohol stove. I am not sure if there were other considerations in opting for a solid lid. I think for me that the TI set gives me another option for a lighter weight set when I plan to be on the move but it definitely doesn't replace my stainless set when my plans involve a base camp and lots of cooking over an open fire. Thanks for your time and interest to tune in!

The only way I get those type of pans to work is to build a diffuser from a can lid with three #10 bolts and nuts as spacers. A low flame hits the diffuser and the heat radiates through the can lid onto the pan. No direct flame contacts the pan, only radiated heat.

I just ordered two skillets to complement my Ti bushpots thanks to this video. I'm thinking it will work great as a lightweight mess kit. (Fun fact about the bushpot, the Solo Stove Lite nests perfectly inside the bushpot). I hate that the titanium line didn't work out for SRO. I've enjoyed the bushpots.

The little frying pan can be seasoned just like carbon steel or cast iron. (First coat it with your favorite oil, wipe it off and then heat it over a fire until it is smoking well (making sure it is evenly heated and a dark brown seasoning forms over the inner surface. You don't want to get it so hot that you burn this coating off and you'll want to treat it just like you would cast iron (no metal utensils). But it becomes a completely non-stick surface this way.

I can find one good reason for titanium cookwares: When it lighter, it can be bigger in same weight as steel. In emergency situation, bigger allow cook more at once. Mostly its usability is like steel.

I love the video and gear, but I see some things that may improved upon. 1st) I think that if you made the mesh carry bag for the water bottle it would be better. 2nd) maybe there might be some thing that could be done about the outer ring of water bottle to prevent the metal grind sound, some thin none abrasive heat resistant material.3rd) I think that if you could make the grill to where it could interlock with other grills to provide a bigger cooking platform along with holes and chains to crate a hanging grill would be cool. All titanium.

Go to a metal surplus store, get a small round piece of copper that is the same size as the bottom of the pan and use that as a diffuser. Put it between the stove and the pan and you'll never have a hot spot again.

From what you say about the characteristics of titanium I can’t help thinking that a titanium steamer would be ideal as steam creates a very consistent and uniform temperature as it’s a good conductor of heat combined with the high conductivity of titanium could be a good product. I must admit I’m not very experienced in camp cooking so I don’t know if the types of food that’s normally carried would be suitable for steaming.

How long does titanium hold its heat in a canteen bottle
@Oldsparkey
@Oldsparkey 3 года назад
The grill I have is like the Pathfinder grill is length and width at 9 13/16 long and 4 9/16 inches wide. Weighs 5 ounces and was $25.00 on Amazon , not the $19.95 Pathfinder is asking fro their grill ( A very good deal ). The height from the coals is decided by how the person sets it up. To me the down side is you lose some of the length ( usable area ) by using logs to hold it above the coals. My other grill is the Vargo Bi-fold titanium grill. It's 7.75 inches long and 8.25 inches wide when opened and 4 inches wide when closed. Weighs 3.5 ounces but costs $49.95. The height is predetermined at 4.5 inches when open. The up side is you can use every inch of the grill. Both grills come is a carrying pouch.

Hey Matt! Question, would there be a boil time difference between the Pathfinder Titanium bottle and the Pathfinder Stainless Steel bottle? Noticed the titanium bottle holds 35 oz to the 32 oz of the stainless steel version. But if they were both holding 32 ounces would the titanium bottle boil water faster since titanium heats up faster?
@slickydicky
@slickydicky 3 года назад
Assuming you have the same consistent heat source then yes it will. At least in my experience
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 3 года назад
Good question. It would be an interesting experiment but it definitely should based on the fact that the TI does transfer heat faster than SS. It may not be a huge difference but a slight advantage for the TI.

I have a few comments... first, I was wondering what is the best way to get the carbon or smoke residue off of any type of cookware, mainly titanium, stainless steel, or aluminum, if you're using a wood stove or cooking over a campfire? Better yet, is there a good way to prevent the smoke, or carbon residue from attaching to your cookware in the first place? This is why I prefer to use an isobutane powered canister stove, or a propane stove. Last, why does a US based company like SRO describe and mark this cookware with metric measurements like ML, and L, rather than American ounces and Quarts? The US rejected the metric system when Jimmy Carter was President!
@darthkek1953
@darthkek1953 3 года назад
The best way to avoid sooting up your pots is to get a wood gasifier stove. Oh and the reason they have Metric units on is due to these being bog-standard pre-existing Chinese titanium products (and thus metric for the international markets) that the company will etch a logo on if you hit a min number of orders. That grill for example, mine has a Naturehike branding on it but I've seen the exact same grill with many different logos on.

@@jeepnicc A long, long time ago, back in the dark ages before there were girl rock and roll bands, co-ed Scout troops, and before Gloria Steinem became a public figure, we girls were taught to make a medium paste out of powdered laundry detergent and water and to "soap up" the outside of our stainless steel cooking pots before using them. Then, when the cooking was finished and the pots had cooled, we washed them inside and out with warm water and steel wool or a scrubber. Then we rinsed them and hung them up to dry. My recollection is that the soap coating worked, along with a little elbow grease. I don't remember if 20 mule team Borax worked as well, but maybe. I know SOMETHING made the cookware clean again, because eBay had several used boy scout and girl scout mess kits for sale, and they were clean. It would be interesting to read what is in Barkeeper's Friend.
