My take on the wire stinger rig using Knot 2 Kinky nickel-titanium wire and AFW titanium wire. This rig is great for toothy fish such as ono (wahoo) but I also routinely catch less toothy species such as mahimahi and yellowfin tuna on them too.

UPDATE: I had a crazy unlucky streak dropping 6 fish in a row so I changed to offset live bait hooks for the stinger. Things immediately got better so it might be a good idea to use offset hooks instead of inline on the stinger.

Aloha Shea, what size and brand you recommend for the stinger

@@AffordableWahoo Thanks Shea for the quick reply. Does it matter what side you place the stinger on the opelu since its now offset to one side. Worried that it will hook itself on the opelu.
@AffordableWahoo
@AffordableWahoo Год назад
@@alanabara1248 I always hook mines into the opelu's right side just because I hook them from the right side on the snout so it lines up better that way. I haven't noticed the offset making any difference in snagging back into the bait.

Thanks! I've been too intimidated to attempt to use wire with my bait rigs but I think I could tie the Perfection knots now, slowly watching this video. Love all the helpful tips you provide on you channel! "Chee Pono!"

Good rig set up video. New to the island and slowly getting my kayak rigged up to take out around Puako and Kawaihae. I’m from San Diego and live baiting with circle hooks is everybody’s go to. have you tried circle hooks as your stinger? If so, good or bad results? 100% agree with loop knots for live baiting, or if rich enough, splurging on ringed hooks (I don’t splurge often).
@AffordableWahoo
@AffordableWahoo 2 года назад
Thanks! Very cool that you'll be fishing out there. Beware of the wind at puako! There's a reason that they built those windmills up the hill. I've never tried circle hooks with a stinger rig because I like the rig to be as sticky as possible. Might work though!

Good stuff! I've always crimped the braided soft wire on my leaders but this looks more streamline. Have you tried tying the same knot on heavier wire? I've caught Ono over 70 pounds so I like the heavier stuff but might not get as many strikes. I think I'll try your system out! 👍🏽
@AffordableWahoo
@AffordableWahoo 3 года назад
Hope it works out for you braddah! I never tried heavier than the American Fishing Wire 40lb with this so not sure. I definitely feel like the lighter stuff gets more bites, but I haven't had a chance to test this rig against a really big fish yet.

Seems like the other wire you used in the other video was easier to tie. Do you think this wire is much better to use?
@AffordableWahoo
@AffordableWahoo Год назад
The stainless wire in the other video is much easier to tie, but prone to kinks that make it useless after 1 or 2 strikes. I still prefer the other stuff though because it's cheaper and easier to rig. I sometimes use this titanium stuff on my dead bait rigs so I don't have to retie every strike.

12 lb mono main stem and 10 lb flurocarbon branches with size 8 hold J hooks. I use tylah lure glo strips and HiPerformance lures fish sticks with 4 oz lead. Most important thing is to hit them right at dawn when they're higher up in the water and in a feeding frenzy. Hope this helps 🤙

What happens if your live bait smaller or larger then the length of the trailer hook? Do you have different lengths of wire made?
@AffordableWahoo
@AffordableWahoo 8 месяцев назад
I make it short enough nowdays that one size fits all. If the bait is too small then I'd probably use just a single hook

If you’re cheap, as you stated, use crimps, you loose too much expensive wire. Much simpler and cleaner too, end product(knot).

Does the titanium leader stay good after fighting a fish and not get all bent and kinked up? What is the advantage of it over the steel single strand ?
@AffordableWahoo
@AffordableWahoo 2 года назад
Yes I have used it for as many as 5 strikes on the same rig. Single strand stainless, on the other hand, sometimes kinks after just one strike. The main advantage is the lower chance to kink.

@@davidyoshida1693 I personally have never had the titanium break yet. If I lose a fish it usually either breaks at my fluro knot or the fish just cuts above the wire.
