How to Study the Bible: Learn EXACTLY how to study the Bible through the framework provided in this online course. I have taught this course over twenty times to people from various cultures, backgrounds, and education level. You can now take this course at your own pace and learn the tools to study the Bible for yourself: theology101ak....
Malachi 3:10 is often quoted to teach Christians that they need to tithe to their local church in order to be blessed financially. However, the context is given to Judah during a time of judgment. Judah was disillusioned with God for not "fulfilling" his promise to return to Jerusalem after they rebuild his temple. So, Judah started to go their own way and started to deal with people and their possessions in a sinful manner. The way that they rebelled against God was by withholding their tithes, which was meant to support the temple system and those without land. God is promising Judah that if they repent and start tithing again, which would indicate their obedience to His law, then he will stop judging them and withholding rain from their land. This verse does not support the prosperity gospel, which teaches that if you give money to God that he will give more back to you. Instead, this verse condemns people who use people for their money instead of use their money to bless people.

God is the same yesterday today and forever. No one should be forced to.give, however I have seen increase in my life by giving to people that teach me spiritually. I am not 10% but I think if your heart is right God will bless you. Money isn't always a blessing, health, and joy also count.

Those who push Malachi 3:9 to get tithes are under the curse according to Galatians 3:10 “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.”

Some people give to get, which is not what we're supposed to do. Deuteronomy 14 tells us that we don't have to give a preacher 10% of your money. Some people have lost their homes, lights have gone out and more problems because of giving with the thought that they will tithe their way way out of poverty. Not so. Give with a cheerful heart, not expecting something in return. Ever notice that when someone needs bill money or food help, there has to be a board meeting? If one offers money to a church/preacher there is no meeting, they quickly put there hand out with no questions asked and take, even from the poor and hurting. What kind of love is that?????

I think what is strange some bring up the law of the old covenant to say we say we should pay tithes. We are not Israelites wandering in a wilderness to pay tithes so we can survive. That is past. Jesus told them to pay tithes because at the times because that was the system then because the were under the old covenant, and to render to God what was his. 😉

It's so funny how people will pray to God to give them employment or provide for them but after being given a job.They go out of their way to debate about tithes just to ensure that they don't give God 10% or offerings after God answered their prayers. May God bless us wisdom and understanding 🙏

You are missing the point. We are told to give under the new covenant. But we are not told what to give. But how to give. For those who have an abundance. 10% is actually giving sparingly. When you teach the truth. It sets us free and takes away the pride of the those who give faithfully and the condemnation of those who struggle because of circumstances to give faithfully. Giving 10% is voluntary. If that's what you have purposed in your heart to do. In proportion as HE has prospered you. That's great. But you can't put that on anyone else. That's the beauty of liberty!

I wish I could could have watched this video back in 1993 when I was a new Christian and not so gullible and naive But RU-vid did not exist and Dr Kim was probably in elementary school back in 1993. The first church I was attending as a very new believer in Christ always made a big production of the offering. One of the elders would go on and on about giving and taking scriptures like this one of context. Practically begging people to give and coercing us. As opposed to the church I am at now where the offering box is hidden in a dark corner of the sanctuary and they do not take offering at all. In fact they prefer you give online. No pressure tactics ever used or emotional manipulation. The focus is on the GOSPEL.

@s4cakagospelgorillaz98
@s4cakagospelgorillaz98 5 месяцев назад
@user-ro4pu5lw7d exactly. That's the point. We are commanded to give but not tithe. Tithing was never money. Can you give me 3 new testament verses that command tithing? You can't use the gospels because JESUS ministry was under the law and you can't use Hebrews because that's a description of Abram voluntarily tithing and not a prescription for new testament believers. If you want to use the tenth as your standard. That's great. That's your choice. But you can't put that demand on others. Scripture must be read in context and you must rightly divide the word of truth. We are not Israel. We are not in the land of Canaan. We are not under the law. There is no temple. We are the temple. We are the house of GOD. We have 1 great high priest, JESUS CHRIST and are a body of priest. Therefore there is no land, animals or crops to tithe from and there are no priest, Levites, widows, orphans and strangers to tithe to and no temple to offer up sacrifices in. Give as the HOLY SPIRIT leads you in proportion to what HE has given you, as you purposed in your heart and give cheerfully. Not grudgingly and not out of necessity as the 1st comment stated. Again. Out of the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses let every word be established. So I need 2 to 3 witnesses in the new testament that commands us to tithe?

Malachi was written in 500 BC then 430 years later in 70 BC General Titus of Rome destroyed the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem ending the provision for tithing. In the 2nd century AD the Talmud which is the Hebrew book of by-laws outlawed tithing because the Temple was not rebuilt. Today Jewish synagogues charge a fee for membership rather than tithing which is unlawful without the Temple in Jerusalem.

Good stuff! If I may also share some of my research on the topic... When it comes to tithing perhaps no scripture is more referenced than Malachi 3:8-12 At face value this passage would seem to imply that God is playing the role of either a mob boss or a slot machine - or both if one translates this passage in terms of monetary value. Who but a ruthless dictator would curse another for not carrying out this alleged indictment to regularly pay a percentage of your income - or else! Does this idea really pass the “love test”? Isn’t choice a primary component of love? And if tithing is compulsory as stated under Mosaic law, how can it really be considered a choice or any sort of act of faith? Another possible translation of this passage would suggest this is not the case. Some of the reasons why could be as follows: 1. In the first few verses of the book of Malachi the “children of Israel” are addressed in a generic sense. However, since the Levitical Priests were technically also “children of Israel” it’s possible that the passage could have been directed to them exclusively. In Malachi 1:6 the indictments are clearly and specifically directed towards the Priests. From that point forward there is no clear change in the direction of focus for whom those indictments are made. The “Priests” are again specifically addressed in Malachi 2:1. As such, it would seem that the indictment to “bring the whole tithe into the storehouse” was actually directed towards the priests. We see no clear change in focus from the Priests for the indictment of “robbing God” so it is reasonable to assume that the indictment could very well have been directed toward the Priests, rather than the entire nation of Israel. 2. There are reasons to believe that the Levitical Priesthood were the only ones actually allowed in the temple storehouse. Non-Jews were permitted the 'ezrat ha-nashim (the forecourt of the Temple); most Jews were permitted in the 'azarah (inner courtyard); only the priests and Levites were permitted in the heychal (inner court or sanctum); and only the High Priest could enter the kodesh kodashim (Holy of Holies). If only a select people were allowed in the storehouse, then Malachi 3:10 cannot be universally applied. It was the Levites, not all of Israel, who were to “bring up the tenth of the tithes to the house of our God, to the chambers of the storehouse” (Nehemiah 10:38). Therefore, it would seem that Malachi 3:10 was not directed at any others besides the Priests at the time which would further weaken the argument that tithing is to be universally applied today. 3. Since the biblical tithe had nothing to do with paying money from monetary earnings there is no biblical reason to think that if anyone gives money to the church they will be monetarily blessed in return or otherwise cursed. 4. It’s possible that what was happening at the time was that the Priests weren’t bringing the proper quantity and/or quality of tithe items (produce and livestock) to the temple as directed, perhaps keeping the best elements of their portion of the tithe for themselves. God could be indicting the Priests, through the prophet Malachi, to properly execute their part of the system, which included bringing proper sacrifices (quality livestock) and food (produce) for the other temple Priests and temple workers. Only the Priests were allowed to conduct sacrifices. 5. The “floodgates of heaven” has nothing to do with monetary blessing. We first find this same term used by God back in Genesis 7:11 where the windows of heaven were open and rain contributed to the flood, as the fountains of the deep were broken open. In Genesis 8:2 it says the windows of heaven were stopped and the rain from heaven was restrained. Isaiah 24:18 also mentions the windows from on high; this phrase is consistently used for rain water. In Genesis, it was a judgment. In Malachi 3 it was to be a blessing - rain on their crops. The nation lived in large part by their agriculture (Husbandry) and depended upon the rain. God's blessing had to do with the provision of water; no rain and they couldn’t produce adequate crops or sustain livestock. Perhaps this passage is emphasizing that if the Priests mishandled their tithes, which was part of the blessing in the Mosaic covenant, a curse would be put on them. The ground would not yield food because God would not allow it to rain which of course would be a detriment to all of Israel. 6. There is no specific indictment for the entire nation of Israel to tithe as only the products of farmers and herdsmen were accepted as tithes. There is no mention of merchants, tradesmen, carpenters etc… ever bartering their crafts or services as a form of tithing or giving a tenth of their earned monetary wages. Therefore, it is unreasonable to conclude that Malachi 3:8-12 applies to the entire nation of Israel. As such, it’s also unreasonable to conclude that it applies to us today either. 7. The book of Malachi was written at the time of Mosaic law in Israel. These laws supported a system of atonement that is now obsolete in the Christian faith as we (Christians) are now under grace, provided by the blood of Jesus.

The curse the Bible is talking about in 3:9, was it a material curse? If so why the blessings must be different? Secondly God promises to rebuke the devourer so that he would not eat their fruit. Is it not material blessings? The vine would not cast her fruit before time! I think the Bible is clearly talking about material blessings.(fruits, ground, devourer) why seek to spiritualize everything when it is clear. Please obey God and give your tithe. God bless you.

Question: I have read Haggai chapter one where the Temple was finally rebuilt and God says that he will fill this temple with glory to surpass the former. Is this what you meant? He could not bless them because even after rebuilding his temple they had not rebuilt themselves (so to speak)? Personally, I get from God that this is most important. Malachi 3:10 was just for Israel at that time! To apply it to modern New Testament times is wrong and not scriptural. You can’t use this verse to suggest that we should be tithing. Tithing was never money. Tithing was close to 30% . Study tithing and see for yourself that tithing is a condemnation. If you tithe then you should get circumcised too. Why stop at 1 Jewish law? Did you know that, concerning giving, or tithing, or prosperity, Malachi 3:8-12 is not the full counsel of God? It is an excerpt, quoted to the church for centuries (believe it or not), which is a misrepresentation of God's counsel. We've accepted it because that's what we have always been taught. Here are a few points to consider. (1) There is no scripture where a pastor may ever require or receive tithes, from anyone. (2) There is no scripture where anyone other than a Levite may ever receive tithes. (3) There is no scripture in the bible that requires a Gentile to tithe. -- Who did God appoint to receive tithes? God said, "And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth [the tithe] in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation (Numbers 18:21). In this scripture, God established who receives the tithe (the Levites), and why they received it (they received no inheritance, and they served in the temple). This assignment is exclusive to Levites. A pastor cannot assume this assignment, he has never been scripturally assigned by God to collect tithes, he is not a Levite. In that same sense, only a Levite, never a pastor, could ever serve in a Jewish temple. The church has not replaced the Jewish temple, and pastors have not replaced Levites. -- People are blessed when they give, not because of Malachi 3, which is based on the Law of Moses, an Old Testament law that has been replaced by Grace under Christ, at the cross. They are blessed because Jesus said, "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you" (Luke 6:38). It is this principle of giving and receiving at work, when we give and are blessed. Not the expired law of tithing, which was required of the Jews (never Gentiles), and could only be received by Levite priests because they received no inheritance and were set apart to work fully in the Jewish temple. -- There is much more to this, such as Abraham's tithe to Melchizedek, Jacob's promise to tithe, the history of when and why the New Testament church tithes (there is actually a date!), and the biblical support for all these truths. To be clear, every pastor has a right to collect offerings in support of the ministry; I fully agree with supporting the church financially. But our giving must be godly. It is wrong to require people to tithe, contrary to the scriptures, then say that we live according to the scriptures. If you're interested in learning more, I have researched and written about this in "Tither, You Are Free!" Blessings to you and your ministry!

@@arkien08 Luke 6:38 is not about tithing. That passage, which is literally from the mouth of God, tells us His requirement for how His New Testament church should give. This giving includes our offerings to the church. Tithing is a false teaching that has been drilled into our minds for centuries (almost 1500 years, to be exact), telling us we are cursed if we don't tithe, and now the church is afraid to see the truth that is literally there in front of us. God literally said, "And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth [the tithe] in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation" (Numbers 18:21). God said, Levites receive "all the tithes." No one else receives any of it! -- There is no scripture in the bible where anyone, but a Levite, is authorized to receive tithes. -- There is no scripture in the bible where anyone, but a Jew, is required to tithe. -- There is no scripture in the bible where a gentile is required to tithe. -- There is no scripture in the bible where the church is required to tithe. -- There is no scripture in the bible where any pastor is authorized to receive tithes, or require the church to tithe. The tithes we (unscripturally) pay today came from the law of Moses, which the church is not under, and has never been under. The law of Moses has been superseded by the New Testament. The church is under the gospel of Jesus Christ, not the law of Moses. People also confuse the tithe paid by Abraham to Melchizedek. This tithe came thousands of years before the law of Moses, and before Moses was even born! It was called a tithe because of the "amount" that was given. There was no law or mandate for Abraham to pay this tithe to Melchizedek. It was paid because of tradition and custom and has nothing to do with the law of Moses, which required the Jews to tithe to Levites. My brother, these are all truths, in YOUR bible, if you can see it. I challenge you to show me any scripture that refutes the points I made above. Go ahead! I'll be here when you're ready. You were never meant to carry the weight of a false doctrine upon your life, or your finances. I want you to be free, my brother.

Today all JEWISH synagogues charge a fee for membership rather than tithing which is unlawful without the Temple in Jerusalem. In the 2nd century AD tithing stopped in the synagogues because the Temple was not rebuilt in Jerusalem. Even before the Temple was destroyed only Jews living or working in Jerusalem were required to tithe. Christian pastors do not know the history and tradition of the Jewish by-laws written in the Talmud.

The main reason that Malachi 3:8-9 was written was because of what was going on in Jerusalem during that particular time this has nothing to do with this modern day that we live in. This is the real reason ! Eliashib the High Priest in Jerusalem his grandson was married to a relative of Sanballat the Horonite (Neh 13:28) and, while Nehemiah was absent in Babylon, Eliashib had leased the storerooms of the Second Temple to Sanballat's associate Tobiah the Ammonite. When Nehemiah returned he threw Tobiah's furniture out of the temple and drove out Eliashib's grandson (Neh 13:4-9) the tithing for the Levites was neglected because of Eliashib the High Priest The complete story is in Nehemiah chapter 13 God was against Jerusalem intertwining with Foreign nations who did not help the Israelites when they left Egypt to go into the promised land and they were also selling merchandise on the Sabbath day and when Nehemiah left Babylon to go back to Jerusalem he cleansed the Temple of God and placed things back in order. And also the tithing of the Old Testament was disannuled Hebrews 7:11-18 11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. 13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, 16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. 17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. 18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. And the reason being that Jesus was not a descendant of the Levitical Priesthood Amen 🙏!

@@Theology101AndrewKim yes I watched your video it was good But one thing I must tell you the church as a whole are missing the concept of what tithing was all about and we can still use not the system of tithing but the general rule of how tithing can be used as a way to sow the blessings of God into the lives of the members of the church by the church owning land and allowing the members to be a part of investing in the land and when Harvest time comes the funds will be a blessing to each member and the church as a whole and by the church owning something tangible the members can help to pay the taxes on the land its not tithing but just a part of business the Bible says that the Israelites prospered while they were in Egypt before they were put into bondage Exodus 1:7 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. They prospered from the land Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” Money can be sown into the lives of the members of the church. But I don't know of any churches that understand this concept of owning any land and giving the members of the church an opportunity to prosper from the land most churches think in terms of building a bigger church. Amen 🙏!

This is completly wrong teaching God's word in the old testament was for our teaching not you simply neglected it, if you neglect this verses of Malachi, so you should do the same to Psalm and others. Even in the new testment it is cleary written who ever give, will be blessed and prospore. 2 Corinthians 9 SEV - 2ይ ቆረንቶስ 6: Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7: Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8: And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9: As it is written: “He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 10: Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

It can never mean for us what it never meant for them. According to your logic, Christians should sacrifice animals, stone disobedient children, not eat pork etc. we do not because we are no longer under the mosaic covenant but the new covenant. Malachi is part of the mosaic covenant period as well.
