Titleist Pro V1X vs Titleist Velocity - Expensive Golf Balls vs Budget Golf Balls! We all spend a small fortune on new the latest golf equipment. Titleist TS2 and TS3 drivers, Taylormade M3 drivers, Mizuno forged irons, the latest PING Sigma 2 Putters, but whats the only equipment that we all use on EVERY SHOT. A few weeks ago I did a trackman Titleist ball fitting with an expert fitter To see which ball in the range offers me the most feel, consistency... and DISTANCE.
These fittings can find out which I the best golf ball for distance, which is the best golf ball for mid handicaps, which Is the best golf ball for high handicap. which golf ball should YOU play?
Now I'm taking these golf balls on the golf course to test them. TITLEIST PRO V1 VS TITLEIST VELOCITY.
How do budget golf balls compare to expensive golf balls? lets find out... and lets do it now

I was chatting to my pro once about golf balls and his advice was to pick the price range I am in and try out the balls in that range, once I found one I liked stick with it and you will learn the characteristics instead of changing every time you see a deal.

Super video James again. I’ve long suspected that there was little to no difference between the so called budget and premium balls in terms of distance. This confirms it for me. On another note, good to hear a pro who tells it as it is (and speaks correctly unlike a certain internet pro from down here in Devon!) . Many thanks.

Your conclusion is spot on, it’s all about control around the greens. There are some shots you just can’t pull off without a good golf ball. It’ll also give you options you don’t have with a cheaper ball. A better ball helps you score better, let’s you be more creative and makes the game more fun to play. If you’re losing half a dozen balls a round though, I don’t blame you for going cheap.
@davidwatson4738

I would say that around the green it comes down to consistency as well as feel. If you play the same shot repeatedly does it consistently roll out the same distance? You are used to hitting the ball hard enough to get the pro v1 to the hole, hitting the velocity just as hard will make it roll beyond the hole. For me it’s pro v1 in the summer but velocity for winter.
@tonywestwell
@tonywestwell 5 лет назад
It is tricky to decide which ball to use. I think in winter I will use a lower cost ball but in better weather and comps I will use a premium ball.

Atm I think of how bad I’ll feel if I lost a ball. So for me cheaper balls play easier because I don’t feel the pressure of losing it is expensive
@paulcurotto3884
@paulcurotto3884 5 лет назад
Great video James. I think the cost is the key for the better balls. As you Gents that are better players won't loose as many balls as us high handicappers. So it becomes a bit expensive for premium balls. I normally try for a medium cost soft ball to help with the feel around the greens and putting. The soft balls are kinder for my wooden woods too.

I like the Velocity. It seems easier to get to the hole on chips and longer putts because of its hardness. Most of my iron shots are stop and drop. And the cover seems a little more resilient. Played a hole round with one this weekend. Pulled put of the water once and hit a tree. Now I am trying the Snell mtb-x. It's pretty good and about the same price as velocity but designed by the guy that co designed the pro v1x.👍

I've been looking for one of you RU-vid golfers to do a test like this for the past year or two, and here it shows up in my feed and IT'S 4 YEARS OLD. I hate that i missed it somehow. In any case, I love the way you outlined the head-to-head test here. The "Real World" is the best way to compare these two very different balls, at least in terms of their construction and how they behave for the individual golfer. Anyway, a couple of things to note on the test that do play in the Velocity's favor, at least from what i concluded from your vid: 1) Early on, you moved the Pro V1X to the fairway early on to get an "equal" test to compare the approach shots to the velocity, which had actually made the fairway. One might say playing the Pro V out of the rough where it initially went would be a proper test because it was crooked while the Velocity was straight - which would likely negate any extra spin the Pro V might offer 2) On the last drive, you brought them both together for the approach again, but the Pro V looked to be about a club shorter than the Velocity off the tee. I would factor that into the Velocity's favor again, because certainly a shorter club would be more accurate on the ensuing approach 3) On the short game test (your chips), one might conclude that this is strictly because you've honed your game around the action that urethane balls have on greenside shots. The Velocity's no doubt do NOT behave the same way, but that's neither good nor bad. You've learned to feel the spin on your chips, another person could play the ionomer ball and get an excellent feel for the rollout. I've certainly played with MANY seniors that are so adept at the chip-and-run shot that it would make your head spin. 4) One last thing that you didn't get to because the test didn't last long enough - the Velocity can take one heck of a beating and still maintain acceptable performance, while the Pro V (at least my experience with it) starts showing some distance issues when the cover shows wear. And that can be as soon as 9-10 holes into a round. In conclusion it's interesting to see a very highly skilled golfer such as yourself go around the course and actually get better results from shot to shot with the cheaper ball, outside of greenside chips. And i'm satisfied that was only because you're an avid golfer that is used to always playing the urethane ball. Chipping skill takes real practice, and i can imagine it's hard to change up for a different type of ball. I see the strength of the Velocity in that it always rolls out a little bit, whereas the Pro V needs a consistent strike (not to mention a good lie that isn't in deep grass) to see a consistent spin action. And you just about have to be elite in that category to be able to repetitively do that! Thanks for the vid, great work!

Yes! Save your money! :) it will make golf more enjoyable when you loose a ball. I will add, I’ve been using Srixon Q-star balls, and I’ve enjoyed them very much, they feel lighter than the ProV1s, probably for slower swing speeds.

Hi James, great video. Do you think you chipped closer with Pro v1x due to the fact that it's the ball you already play. I'm sure with a few rounds with the velocity, you would do the same. I play chrome soft summer, and switch to Wilson dx2 optix in the winter due to the soft feel and bright colours. Don't notice much difference in scoring if I'm honest and the Wilson cost £15 a dozen.

I play the Dt Trusoft ball because of price. I don't see a difference off the tee but I definitely notice a difference around the green. I like the sound off the putter face. They are a third of the price compared to prov's so I'll deal with a little extra runout on the green.

I've used various makers golf balls this past summer. Playing about 3x a week on 2 different county courses where I live. Durand Eastman Golf Course and Churchville Golf Course which is about a 25 min. drive away. I have used the Pro V1x, the Velocity as mentioned here, the Kirkland signature series, and the Callaway super soft. My score typically ranges from 83 for 18 holes to around 89 for the same. I most definitely score lower with the Kirkland and Callaway balls. So that is what I use the most, and I have many of each of the above mentioned. The Velocity ball feels as hard as rock when struck and heavier off my driver face. I found on the greens that I can use one of my Carbite putters with a softer insert to compensate for putts and to get a bit more feel on putts. The other thing is is keeping my wedge grooves sharpened up. But all things considered the Kirkland signature series and Callaway super soft might go a few less distance but usually end up in the fairway. I just don't feel I have the swing speed to take full advantage of the Pro V1x. Ok that's it. stay safe

Great video, have tried this type if test before but in my opinion (humble) it's about how familiar you are with the ball you use. If you use the same ball always, it will (I suspect) perform the same. Obviously most expensive balls will perform better than least expensive ones, will a better player get more out of a ProV1 than a mid to high handicapper? Great video again!

Of course tested several golfballs on course before deciding. Started on the green with the putter and with the wedge around the green because that for me has to be good and is the main reason why I chose a ball. If I don’t like the feel up and around the green than that isn’t a ball for me. Lowers scores are made up and around the green. Personally I especially notice the difference with chip shots ...just as with your chips where the velocity didn’t stop but runs out and the ProvI checks and stops. So for me more control with the more expensive balls.

Considering the cost of playing around the cost of the clubs etc. if by using a ball that fits me better I shoot two to three strokes better around it’s for the difference. I was by Titleist as well and they picked the Pro V1 and the AVX as my best. It was flip a coin between them. The velocity had the best distance by about 6 yards so I tried them on course for 3 rounds.

To me the conditions are too wet and the greens much too slow greens to make a difference on those balls. Also I like to hit various shots especially a low cut and down wind high draw. Those are the full shots that most budget balls seem to have trouble with. Down wind knocks down draws and low spinning balls are hard to flight it seems. Spin around the green and putting on fast greens say 11 or higher which is pretty common in Texas is where the budget ball always fail. Great video but would love a redo in august on a baked course

Velocity isn't exactly Titileist's bottom-of-the-barrel golf ball. Here in the USA, they cost a little more than half as much as the Pro V1 line. I haven't purchased any Velocity, but I have found a few, and thought they performed just fine for me. If you wqant "Expensive vs Cheap" try a Pro V1x against a Pinnacle or Slazenger.

The real a question is do you have the ability to adjust your game to the balls characteristics. My experience has been that the ball that gets me closest to the hole whether from the tee or the fairway or on the green will consistently produce the best score. And for me distance was more important than dispersion.

Half the formula of the short game results is the relationship between the club face and the ball surface. I have found that using my TaylorMade raw faced wedges that there is zero difference between the velocity and any other ball. Selecting the correct ball is directly dependent on what clubs you use.

Players don't necessarily need the ball with the most spin, it depends on your tendency. If you are typically 3-5 yds short of the pin when you hit the green, you don't want as much spin. If you are typically past the pin, then you want more spin. Track it for 5-10 rounds and if you heavily favour one or the other, then go with a higher or lower spinning ball. Do the same for chips, some people need to get their ball to roll out more because they are always short. Don't just choose the most spin, choose the ball that fits your game and will help you get your shots closer to the hole.

Paul Milsom Try the AP3 as well! I have them and really like them. It is a nice compromise between the the AP1 and AP2. Bonus, It won’t make you change everything else in your bag for gapping purposes either since you are going from AP1. FYI: I don’t really get fliers with the AP3. Also, AP3 does feel softer than AP1, though obviously not as soft as AP2.

@@richardsdiaz1 Thanks for that, I had a Titleist fitting on Thursday, so went through both AP2 and AP3. My dispersion and consistency were better than the AP3, and my AP1's and, even though the AP2 lofts were weaker, I was hitting both similar distances. Still wondering whether to keep the AP1's, ditch the wedges, 47° and 52° and get some Vokey replacements, it's a dilemna, might be better off having some coaching instead. Thanks for taking the time to comment, much appreciated

The premium balls aren't that expensive if you're careful and good enough not to lose them often. And I disagree. You need lower backspin off the driver to achieve longer distance. Lower backspin is necessary to achieve the arch type of ball path and a shallower descent angle allowing for some run off. A higher backspin would make the ball drop more steeper like an iron shot which isn't ideal for the distance shot.

I tested golf balls and what I noticed is that the Premium 4 and 5 piece golf balls spin more out of control right and left. I hit more fairways with a 2 piece ball because it's spinning less right to left. You missed the fairway and green with the Pro V1 in this video.

I use velocities most of the time. Par 3's I use Pro V1s

The performance difference off the tee with a driver is negligible with golf balls from all the reputable manufacturers, expensive or cheap. What you pay the premium for is control on 50 yards in, big difference there with the Urethane cover and harder inner layer which will spin way more than the cheaper ones.

I used the velocity before and I dont like the ball at all. I used the Titleist NXT Tour Soft, the Velocity spins too much and the cover is too thin. Played 18 and on the 9th hole, I hit my driver and split it down to the core.
