Sailing my inflatable sailboat on Wellington Harbour. The gusty conditions kept me on my toes. I managed to keep the boat right-side-up!.
What kind of boat is it? It's Tiwal. Made in France and sold here by www.tiwal.nz

Hey, oh it’s so cool to see someone who loves their Deval as much as I do. Yes that nosediving thing at 1:41, hahaaa. It happened to me twice yesterday at a nice lively bft 5. Had to have a think about that a bit. Yeah sit further back. I watched the Tiwal youtube guy in Hawaii again, as well as speed and surf. They were all nice and far back. So great, our boats! I live on a thermic lake in Germany. 4-5bft every sunny day. Come play!

exactly, the trick is to sit further back

Hai, a nice video about your Tiwal. You had a lot of wind there. I also have a Tiwal 3 and also made a video on the Greifswalder Bodden on my channel. Take a look at it. Greetings Wolfgang

Looks a windy day. And hard work to get back from turtle. Hope you have got yourself a mast float now! Have you upgraded the vang? That looks superior to the tiwal one. I have just got a tiwal and I’m going to swap the main sheet block for one with a cleat but not the silly money tiwal one.

Was the red wind direction thing off the mast part of the Tiwal or a separate purchase? If separate, where did you get it?

It's actually one that's made for a Laser dinghy. I got it from my local marine supplies shop. It's not actually ideal for the Tiwal, because it's designed for a very slightly fatter mast. To make it stay in place, I put some padding between it and the mast - just a couple of pieces of non-slip matting.

This one might fit better, but I don't know the source facebook.com/735247402/videos/499729195172538/

BTW, I actually found and purchased the one one recommended to your in an earlier comment Alex. (My old one broke). The new one is the Little Hawk, from here www.hawkmarineproducts.com/prod-lhawk2.htm. I've used it twice this summer, so far, and it's great.

The Go Pro GPS unit did record that. From memory I think it said about 10 knots.

I have the optional foam padding on mine. It works very well. I don't ever recall becoming uncomfortable. BTW sorry it took me so long to see your comment! I'm not sure how I missed it for so long.

What causes the nose of the boat to go underwater?
@morewindplease5715

All sailboats experience a forward pitching force in certain conditions, but that bit where the water comes right over the front at very low speed is unusual. I think it was probably just a sudden version of the normal pitching force -- when a gust hit suddenly. I suspect my technique may be a little flawed, in terms of how I handled the gust. There's a nice diagram here how the forces work www.physicsforums.com/threads/physics-of-sailing-windsurfing-systems.1000312/. Basically, the sail is pushing the mast forward, and friction with the water is pulling the hull back. Because the forward force is up high and the backward one is down low, that tends to rotate the boat forward. This is why you see all dinghy sailors, in all types of boat, sitting well back in the boat when they are going fast. (The faster you go, the stronger those two forces are, and so the more the boat wants to pitch forward and the more you have to move your weight back to counteract it). In the Tiwal, I find that once its picked up a bit of speed, the shape of the hull seems to give it a bit of extra lift at the front, and the pitching force reduces. You can see that later in the video, when I comment on the pitching force, and then once the boat picks up a bit of speed it's more stable. Once it's stabilized, you just have to avoid steering the boat into the back of any big steep waves. There weren't any big enough to cause problems in the video, but in rougher sea conditions I've had water over the bow before, in both the Tiwal and a my old Laser. The solution is to keep your weight well back when reaching or going downwind at speed, and steer to avoid the steepest parts of the waves. Steering at speed like requires a little more care in the Tiwal because of it's lesser height in the bow, but that's all part of the fun.

It's common to this boat (and sometimes other boats ...) You have to to sit down at the rear of the boat in downwind conditions, and it works very well...

Yes. Here's a dramatic example of someone having the same problem in an RS Aero. A gust so sudden, they didn't have time to move back: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Vy4DaDw8YFY.html

@@morewindplease5715 that aero endo was amazing. I will also try to keep power on next time and just focus on getting back, maybe the sail can lift her forward and out. Hahaa. So fun.

How hard is it to tack in Tiwal?
@morewindplease5715

Super easy. They turn real quick and easy. Moving across the boat is easy because its just a flat surface, and its very slightly soft.
