Thanks so much! Are you trying to learn more about sharpening, or hedge shears specifically?

Great one, Matt. Twice as Sharp lessons, buck a minute goal, and nice improvement on the sound quality. High value for the sharpening community. Thank you and be safe.

A couple quick cell phone pics before disassembly makes reassembly easier. Working my way through your vids. Your Work Sharp lopper video saved my today.

That's a great call with the cell phone pics. That's saved my hide in the past in lots of ways. Thanks!

Living in the country with lots of good old country boys, farmers, and Mennonites I get quite a bit of different tools that require a sharp edge, not the least of which are hedge trimmers. My procedure is to disassemble them and use my 8-inch brass or steel wire wheel to remove most of the rust or grime ( useful for mower blades also) then a quick scotch bright cleaning on the 2x42 belt followed by belt sanding with various grits depending on the severity of the blade. I do not hone the blade although a quick pass on the flat side with a scrap piece of steel or wire brush takes care of removing any of the unsightly burrs. I have yet to have a complete utilizing this method... just say'n Ken/Ultra Sharp

Great for the environment, and the pocket! The difference in the CO2 cost to the environment of buying a new product, rather than just resharpening must be massive. Meny people would bin and buy new, since they are not overly expensive .

Sing my song, Paul! Yeah, buy quality one time and take care of it for generations. We got off that track but maybe someday people will get sick of owning garbage. We'll see!

I eliminated getting mixed up on these types of shears after sharpening and putting them back together by taking a couple of photos as I dis-assembeled them which proved to be invaluable

You perform the best QUALITY on those shears as in any of the videos I've watched. Bravo! Since there are two blades on the shears, do you add the inches on BOTH blades to arrive at a price?
@capnmatt41
@capnmatt41 3 года назад
Thanks so much, Bob! Yes, I ask for $1 per inch of cutting blade which may sound like a lot but it'll be less than the replacement cost for a pair that's worth sharpening. Appreciate you kind comment.

I have this same tool. A small cylinder 3/8” x 1/8” with a small washer while taking apart this tool it fell out and not able put it back. Actually I did a pretty good job of sharpening and cleaning it feels great except for this cylinder. What is the purpose of this cylinder? I am 72 years old and watched my late husband , who took pride in taking care of his tools. I do have a grinder but did not use it. I enjoyed your video very much, thank you.

ken golden/Ultra Sharp and I prefer to do gardening shears etc. on my 2x42 or the 1x30 depending on the size I've found it takes considerably less time to get the job done

What are the two grits you use for sharpening and honing on the bench grinder with the "Twice as Sharp?" In all the videos I've watched, I've never seen your method used. Interesting!! 😁
@capnmatt41
@capnmatt41 3 года назад
The first wheel is sold as 100 grit aluminum oxide. Not sure the grit rating on the honing wheel.

What is the "strength" of your wire wheel and how fast (rpm's) of your bench grinders? Thank you.

Hi Matthew! I have a playlist of sharpening videos I have made, with just various random stuff I was sharpening: ru-vid.com/group/PL3QFVBcFwksweSbJ1IFcEyKhcsg5DxMEc Right now it has 6 videos, and I am currently editing a new one about sharpening garden shears (which is how I found this video).

Do not hone the edge. You're not sharpening for a seamstress. You want a toothy edge to grip and cut.
@capnmatt41

Right on!
@superedge99

I agree completely, don't leave any chance to push what you're trying to cut.
@mrplod1616
@mrplod1616 3 года назад
Exactly what I was thinking! Don't create a burr. If you go right to the edge they will have the right type of edge for this type of tool. If you have a burr, you have gone too far :)
@superedge99
@superedge99 3 года назад
@@mrplod1616 you can still create a burr, you simply cut it off after weakening the burr.
@mrplod1616
@mrplod1616 3 года назад
@@superedge99 Yes, but if you have created a burr you have gone past the point of sharpness required for this type of blade and taken off too much material. You also risk heat damage to that fine edge. :)
