Even though this was a commercial of what an editor is or about, I feel that the Media Composer software is a great tool in this industry of the features it has. Thank you Avid for your services.

I've been on FCP (legacy) for over 10 years now, and don't want to migrate to FCP X. I've been evaluating the latest versions of Avid MC and Premiere Pro. Thanks to Kevin P. McAuliffe's tutorials for FCP 7 editors (switching to Avid) and being able to 'test drive' my trial version of Avid MC8 for the past week or so, I am now a convert. Avid's ability to keep my editing in realtime even after adding some of my favorite filters (the same filters that force me to render in FCP and Premiere - I'm software only on all three apps), will make a big difference in my turn-around time as having to render everything on the other systems in the past has been my biggest hindrance. And this is only on an iMac, I can only imagine what you can do with it on a new Mac Pro loaded with RAM. Credit Kevin P. McAuliffe for truly convincing me that Avid can do just about everything except remotely start my car. After you learn it, I can see it really is one of the best.

I started video editing in 1978 and it’s not that difficult to pick-up, today’s technology makes it easy (FCPX is best). The one thing I found stressful throughout my career as a freelance editor is to find myself on a long project, with an obnoxious producer all day/week, but I’m locked in by my contract and it goes against you if you make a fuss. Another problem is that sitting down for long periods, like today for example is a 12 hour shift, the runners bring lunch to you as you edit to save time, it is very unhealthy for you/me, fortunately this desk is adjustable so I can stand up to edit if I want. My advice is, find short projects with a deadline, and work for a company that is big enough to sue if they forget to pay you. Oh, and buy some eye drops! Good Luck.

TimelineProvision TP You just doesn't know what I mean craps, craps are which if you swing the camera around like you don't mean to shoot anything while it's rolling but the camera man were meant to shoot something. Not to mention you can't see anything except motion blur and out of focus. now make a good edit :) I'm not god, maybe you are.

That I wait excessive periods of time to import, transcode, export and upload all the whilst things are crashing around me and going back two steps after an unknown error that happens for absolutely no reason.

Depends on the genre of the book. Editing can never be easy, and it is usually done on nonfictional as well as fictional manuscripts: What do I think about all that when editing? Nonfictional manuscripts - They include memoirs, autobiographies, biographies, poetry, and real-life short stories, and scholarly works such as textbooks. For autobiographies and memoirs especially, I would have to delete "dirty laundry" statements especially at living people (because of defamation concerns). For biographies, basically you will need releases from real people you want to include and a release (this is known as a liability waiver) from the person you want to include so you don't get sued or worse because some of the writings in biographies may include privileged or private information - especially when you go deep into one's family history and photos. Fictional manuscripts such as novels - In addition to spelling/grammatical errors to check, the main concern is character traits or character names that could be libelous and have to be retracted or changed or deleted if there are any red-flags. Ditto for firms or companies' names used in such manuscripts--if it is defamatory the names or the firms will have to be altered or deleted to avoid actionability. Types of editing include - Line editing - you edit almost every line mainly for grammar or spelling errors, including spacing errors. Line editing can be more detailed than that, and may include making sure quotes are inside verbatim passages written by someone else (to avoid plagiarism), or if you alter any word in the quoted passage, the altered words are in square brackets. In scholarly passages, basically you make sure you have the footnote or endnote or parethentical reference citations down pat so you also avoid plagiarism accusations. Copy editing - you look at the font size, and formatting in every page, for consistency, and if there are flaws, you correct them. Developmental editing - you look at whole paragraphs, and maybe even a few whole pages from each chapter, to look for non-sequiturs and other obvious irrelavancies, thematic deviances, and unacceptable filler paragraphs. If there are any, you mainly delete these from your manuscript in the revision process. You also take out anything that disrupts the story flow or thematic flow.

Video editing is much different than prose editing. Here, you look at things like appropriate pixelation, screen size, and other matters like tint, brightness, contrast, and saturation. You also look at film speed - should it be sped-up or slowed-down, and other matters like cutting techniques (cross-cutting, intercutting), and even the type of shots you want in place of the original film shot (panoramic, close-up, cut-away, etc.). Finally you add in the beginning and closing credits, add SMPTE time (if needed), and get the timing and markers of each frame down to hundredths to thousandths of a second (for example, putting a marker at 43.327 seconds, another marker at 1:13.295 (that is, 1 hour, 13 and 295 thousandths seconds), and the like. If music is added to the video, appropriate markers for start and finish are established.

"to be an editor is to have a gift". that makes no sense, ive been a video editor for years and all it is is learning and lots of tedious work/review. anyone can do it, its just that not everyone wants to.

Shortstack McGee That's not what he means, he means it's a gift to be able go edit. Not that you need to be gifted to be an editor

Avid is like taking a crowded city bus 40 blocks in the rain, then getting bit by a dog when you get off at your stop. Then your boyfriend or girlfriend breaks up with you and when you walk into the street crying your legs get run over by a dumptruck. Then 35 minutes later it finally unfreezes, because it just imported 25 .jpgs, and it's ready to go!

Sony is good for starters. Premiere is good for tv-production. When it comes to giant files and you have 120 hours of recordings, the only few options to use is still Avid or premiere. Premiere isn't there yet. But Adobe is starting to make something great.
