He actually says that his child like nativity is what made it all possible. If he would have been older he would have thought about it more and never think it would work.
It does not surprise me actually; younger people are daring. At that phase of life we all feel we’re capable of everything so we feel more empowered. Youth is great
My uncle Wayne Bowers was on the show circa 1976-77 as the truth teller. His unusual story was having nearly 20 brain surgeries after a tumor was discovered near his cerebellum. His illness was detected in the early 70’s. So this type of surgery was primitive and experimental at best. He was never expected to survive. But he went on to live a full life. I would be thrilled to find his episode someday. If anyone knows where to retrieve specific episodes, please let me know. I stayed home from school just to watch it. I was about 8 or 9 years old, and never forgot how excited I was to see my uncle on TV. Unfortunately, he passed in 2016 at age 68. RIP Uncle Wayne, I love you!
I like how in the movie they start out with him on the show and they follow what actually happened of the show. I loved the movie; currently reading the book.
Number 3 was on point as well. I saw the movie yesterday and still was sure it must have been #3. Frank is the real deal with his laidback attitude....
I LOVE your question! The guy said 3 laid low the whole time which I didn't agree with at all. Most conspicuous outfit, hairdo, everything. Abagnale almost fucked up when he gave his parole expiration date. In the 70s I believe it was a rule that you have to snort coke before going on stage, but those people should've gotten this one.
I'm currently reading his book, almost done. Amazing amazing amazing. Although he's a criminal you find yourself cheering and urging him on. A classic tale, one of the most interesting and to think all of this before his 21st. The movie doesn't do justice to what he achieved. Nothing at all. As a doctor he tended to the emergency room as well as the ENTIRE hospital, overseeing. He did that for 11 months. Passed the Bar after his 3rd try, posing as a Harvard grad lawyer who decided to be a pilot. He posed as an FBI agent to return to a bank where he cashed a fake check. He remembered he wrote his real name and dads address on the back of. So he called the bank, said the FBI would be there in 5 mins to get the check. He walked in, took it back and nobody noticed his real name on the back. Oh and he smashed sooooooo many girl's. Soooo many, all mid 20s or later before he was 18! Oh also just on top, he lectured as a doctor in sociology for a semester. Wtf hey haha.
So amazing that he smashed so many girls. I could have done the same with dudes, too, when I was 16... But did I? No, because there's no gold metal for it
I mean can you blame him though? He only served 6 years of a 72-year sentence and all of the anti-fraud measures he came up with for checks have made him a millionaire
@@Barbe Hmmm ....... well, Barbe, apparently you DID do just that. I reserve the right to insult whom I choose, but where is the insult in speaking truth? Perhaps my attitude was a bit derisive but you see, Barbe, you were never one of his altar boys. We all disliked him intensely. The man had a disdainful and overbearing attitude toward we fellows -- hence, my disdain is gladly returned. Take your remonstrations to a place where someone cares.
@@Barbe Boo ..... hiss, Barbe. I presume that you never met the man. I never claimed to be Miss Manners -- I just remarked upon a personal observation. The same way in which you are allowed to remark. Stuff the remonstrations, OK?
I'm pretty sure those pix were taken when his ghostwritten and sensationalized book came out, where he's basically the same age as in this episode. I've seen at least one probably authentic picture of him from the time when he was pulling his capers (he's with a stewardess) and in that one he does look like a teenager, albeit a mature one.
Pretty interesting to see the actual show from the movie. Also, I never saw any episodes of this show and never got the reference when Eminem sings "Will the real Slim Shady please stand up ?". Kinda blew my mind to hear that and make the connection
I heard them say that "will the real so-and-so please stand up?" on the new reboot of the show the other night and I thought the host was just making an Eminem reference lol
Really? I’ve just watched “catch me if you can” and now you’re telling me there’s a full episode of “to tell the truth”??! Well then...let’s watch the damn thing
Huh. I did not actually know that it was Joe Garagiola until just now, and that he portrayed himself in the film Catch Me If You Can in reenacting this episode.
Yes and that was actually Garagiola and Carlisle from this clip, but the very last question about who was it that finally caught Abagnale was a voice over.
I suppose that you were busy during the show's introductory segment? You seem to be a fan. No recognition of his voice or appearance during the show? Wow ......
The funniest part was when number 1 said Peggy would be happy to know that he was a Catholic priest. Just earlier, when you rewind, you can catch his amused smile as he looks at either the other contestants or someone in the audience. Priceless.
Excellent vid! Of course, I tuned in because I wanted to see the actual Abignale episode... but I'm also an Isles fan and I never knew this about my beloved team! In '77 they were on the rise and would win their first cup three years later! Excellent!
I just love Nipsy! I'm always thrilled when he shows up on a show and he was great in The Wiz. Alas, he was 40 years older than me (did not look it!) and, of course, rich and famous so I never would have met him anyway but it would be a lucky woman who had that dude spouting poetry to her. No one nailed him down tho. Lifelong bachelor.
I don't know if it's because I saw the movie, but you could tell it was #2 because of the slight bragginess of his voice, and his overall confident demeanor. #3 was very smug and did his homework, he did a very good job.
It's terrific to see the actual show. Now I can appreciate how the movie used a seamless blend of original footage and re-enactments with Leonardo DiCaprio. Some observations: 1. I thought it was strange how in the movie the host sounded like he was cut off after saying 0:40 "...and you’re gonna see what I mean" - turns out that he was cut off, because in the original footage he goes on to say 0:41 "...right after we meet our panel." I guess the movie cut out his introduction of the panel to save time. 2. Frank Abagnale Jr. was born in 1948 and the show aired in 1977, so that makes him 28/29 at the time of the show, but 2:47 he looks like he's in his 40s. 3. The show said that 3:08 he cashed $2.5 million in bad checks - but the movie said $4 million. Who to believe?
#1 - Whoopee #2 - So?? I'm 60 years old, and am often told that I appear to be in my late 40's to early 50's #3 - Movie editors have rarely received kudos for their dedication to accuracy. I would side with the TV show amount. He was THERE to correct it, if needed, prior to filming.
@@theenquiringone7353 2.5 M is probably correct. The movie may have inflated the number to $4M to quite literally keep up with inflation, since it was released in 2002.
@@dabtican4953 Yeah I'm discovering that now. I got the book: the Greatest Hoax on Earth, and it's pretty sad the REAL damage Frank caused. It completely changed my perspective. Frank is a scum.
I have seen the film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, and for sure it is an excellent film (Abagnale himself had a small cameo as an international police officer arresting his character). Watching this, seeing him able to fool the panel...it's amazing! And Peggy getting the shock of her life at 11:44, that was hilarious!
He has fooled a lot of people, but not all of them .Check Wikipedia for the veracity of his story , he is nothing more than a petty thief , that spins a very convincing yarn .
People don't realize that that movie that was made at Christopher Walken playing his father when in real life Frank Abigail at 16 years old when his parents got divorced never saw his father ever again
Nipsy Russell Im here to set the record straight About sex appeal on a woman’s weight It’s nice to be neat And to look petite If you want to feel some heat You gotta have some meat!
Puncho Samurai No I am not. She married a Jesuit priest and educator named Eugene Feeney in 1979 and remained married to him until her death in 1999. He was a pretty influential person. Google his name and also check out Peggy's Wikipedia page. Peggy seemed to know quite a bit about the Catholic faith. I myself am a Catholic priest.
@@mariamesquita1105 Yes, Maria - but they are perfectly free to leave the priesthood. Some do it for sex, some do it on principles of faith .... but it's common.

I have seen the guy's picture a few times, so at the outset I already knew who the imposter was. But number 3 was so convincing I very nearly changed my mind!
I knew it was #2 before I watched this. Only because in Catch Me If You Can, in the beginning of the movie they started with a to tell the truth scene and Leonardo DiCaprio’s character was #2
This guy was so smart he fooled everyone up until he got caught. Too bad he didn't just use those brains for good in the first place. Eventually he did though.
I saw him tell his story on FedTalk, and even though I didnt recognize his face, I recalled him saying he was 6foot tall at the age of 16. so I was pretty sure it was the biggest guy.
She litteraly said "number 2 looks like the guy you trust as a doctor or a lawyer" and thats why she didnt vote for him. But thats the point. Or am i dumb and they won. I dont understand This game
Ferdinand Waldo Demara was "The Great Imposter" played by Tony Curtis. Catch Me if You Can (Frank Abagnale's story) didn't come out until 25 years later. That's why we all could identify him immediately but none of those celebrities of the day could.
FIRST PANEL: I just started watching, and after only the intro, I think it's the one in the middle (No. 2) - you've got to have a full head of nice hair and a certain look to be suave enough to con many people. FOLLOW-UP: Whew! So close there, and I started to believe it was No. 3 after the interviews - and No. 3's real line of work definitely explains why his answers were so good.
Actually, it looks like they just took the original footage and did some editing. When Joe says, “Our first guest, he’s made a career out of being the most outrageous impostor that we’ve ever come across on this show, and you’re gonna see what I mean,” his inflections, pauses, and hand gestures during this clip and in the movie are *exactly the same*. The only difference is that in the movie, he was placed behind his podium, and the panel was already seated in the movie. Also, he and the panelists look exactly the same, right down to the clothing. Also, there is no way in hell he did not age a day between 1977 and 2002.
When I saw Catch Me If You Can, I wondered if Frank Abagnale really appeared on To Tell The Truth, or if they used artistic liberty with this detail when making the movie. Frank Abagnale never saw his dad again after he ran away from home, like he did in the movie, but this detail about the game show is true.
He did see hid mom and his dad , because his entire story is fake .The truth about Frank is out , he was in jail as a teen and never did claim the things Frank has claimed .
