I'm a little older than Ally, I remember watching the Mike Douglas show and she was on because of her book. I don't remember ever seeing this one though.
Apparently Ally wrote the book -- a best seller -- in her spare time. She danced with the American Ballet Theatre from six to fourteen, but later switched to acting full time because she didn't want to be anorexic. 'She Was Nice To Mice' was so popular that it was released as a spoken word vinyl (this was prior to books on tape) read by, of course, Alexandra Elizabeth Sheedy. She continues to act AND is a book editor as well as a professor of theatre. Wow. I'm happy to just get groceries and pull a few weeds.
@@ingridfong-daley5899 Thank you for the correction. To be precise, Books On Tape was founded in 1975, the year this show was broadcast. Caedmon released the vinyl LP the following year. Of course books and excerpts from them were available for decades prior on other media.
Maybe you're talking about something more specific, but Disney read-along records (like those Disneyland brand ones) were around earlier than 1975 weren't they? Maybe I'm mixing memories in my head. You sound like you've done research on it tho so I'm happy to give you the points. :)@@YouzTube99
I am the same age as Ally Sheedy. I remember seeing this and thought the book sounded great. It is! If you liked this be sure to check out the Mike Douglas episode of Ally Sheedy, Andrea McArdle and Kristy McNichol from the 1970's. It was very cool and groovy! Ally turned out to be a great actor and enjoy her movies!! Gosh this was a happy blast from the past!!
Whats amazing is not only was this a best seller for her, but it's not even her best work. Her book ,'Yesterday I Saw The Sun' is a collection of her original poems. All about her trials and life as an anorexic ballet dancer to her rehabilitation from addiction. We use this book in a clinical setting for young ladies in rehab. Ally has also written other works but unfortunately, I think her acting and also as Professor of drama at City College of New York has taken way to much time on her personal writing. Hopefully someday when she needs a sabbatical maybe she get back to writing! 🌹🕊️
Should be noted that Ally's mother Charlotte Baum was a well-known writer, literary agent and press agent for writers and illustrators. All three skills were on display here.
When I went to Parsons School of Design in the summer of 1979 all the students knew who she was and did not like her at all. I found out that the reason was due to her parental connections and NOT her talent.
@@libertynow4047 Did you just make that up? Her mother’s maiden name is Charlotte Baum but as far as I can tell there is no relation. He definitely isn’t Ally’s grandfather. L Frank Baum had four children, all boys, and they were all born just before the turn of the century. None of Baum’s children were Ally’s parent.
Hardly anyone does, it's kind of lost to history. BTW, Ally's mom was well-connected in New York City media, hence the kid's publicity triumph, far more than 99.99 percent of writers. Her parents did everything possible to forestall her early fame, recognizing it was the kind of thing that could....how to put it....fuck her up.
Ally Sheedy looks a little bit like Melissa Gilbert here which to me is a compliment. "The Breakfast Club", always my favorite Ally Sheedy movie. Great actress!
Very fun to see this. I graduated USC the same year as her (1985) and I was probably only 5 rows behind her that day. They sat us music school graduates behind the drama department. She was already known by that time from some movies she’d done and so she was easy to recognize. She looks very cute here and she’s obviously a very smart and talented person. Happy that she’s had the success in her career. Kind of wish I would have got to know her back in our college years.
I had no idea that Ally Sheedy was an author, let alone at that early in age. Of course, Allison from “The Breakfast Club” was a pretty creative artist, using her dandruff for snow in one of her drawings.
@brentwalker8596 7 days ago Wow, I had no idea that Ally was an author, let alone at such a young age. Do you use 2 screen names or just copy other people?
@@Cjnw Yes. I believe she was 12 & very mature for her age. Mike was gushing over her because her book was on the The NY Times bestseller list at the time.
I really enjoyed this. I was already familiar with Ally's book (though I haven't read it yet). I have read one (and own) of her books of poetry. It was written when she was going through some dark times, and I found her poems had a great deal of emotion and depth. I bought the book because I was a fan of her acting, but then I became a fan of her writing, too. In fact, it was her writing that really opened my mind to poetry and all that it could be. That helped me when I had to teach a Reading unit on poetry to my elementary school students. If you ever read this, Ally, thank you.
Number 3 came out and introduced herself then gave a little wink. Take from that what you will but stands to reason that she wasn’t the real deal. I actually recognized Ally (Alexandra) Sheedy when she came out.
Wow - had no idea. Good for you Ally. What a tallent. Loved you in the Breakfast Club when I was a teenager and in Short Circuit. Soo cool to see this.
It should be noted the idea behind her book was taken wholesale from the 1939 book Ben and Me: An Astonishing Life of Benjamin Franklin by His Good Mouse Amos.
Yeah, it's for sure surprising that they were able to locate a whole three teenagers in the 1970s who didn't use "like" every other word. I would have thought one would have to go back to at least the 1930s to find that many.
Its so interesting that emerging actors were encouraged to do shows like this back then to get their faces out there. The added bonus was to get accustomed to being under the lights, etc. This one had much better reasons.
Had no idea she wrote a book very talented young lady. Loved her in The Breakfast Club. When she flung that cold cut up in the air behind her and it stuck to the statue I couldn’t stop laughing.
I watched this show when I was a kid (8 years old in '75). I might have seen this episode at the time, but unfortunately I don't remember specifically, though they were kids instead of adults.
Being on a show like this (not being able to play by standard political rules, knowing the questions in advance from the panel) on prime time network TV and surviving should be mandatory before running for any political office.
I never knew how talented Ally was and the prestigious life she grew up in. Growing up in New York and her mother was a writer and press agent and ally became a vegetarian at age 12. Then went to college in L.A. lots of opportunities. Great parents. Very talented and she looks smart as well.
Gene Rayburn, you were almost sounding like Capt. Clarence Oveur at the start. I swear I thought the next question was going to be, “Do you like gladiator movies?” 🤨
Gene is kind of creepy here constantly saying how attractive these children are BUT nevertheless had no idea Ally was a writer. LOVED her in The Breakfast Club"
Gene Rayburn became known for being creepy with female contents on Match Game. He creeped me right out in this Ally Sheedy clip. There are clips of him perving out on youtube.
Back in the 80s, my wife (at the time) looked like Ally Sheedy, and although we were both fans, my wife would say, "I'm having a Sheedy day today" as sort of an homage to Ally. That could be either good or bad, depending on how she felt.
@@elliebellie7816I suppose you want people to only remember you for your most difficult times? She has done a lot of great things, including recovering from addiction problems.
Never knew this about Ally Sheedy. The other two girls were coached very well. I'd never have guessed the right person if I didn't know who was AS beforehand.
Wow. She is 9 years older than me and a total heart-throb and genius too. Loved her in War Games and Breakfast Club (my ex-GF put me on to that one in 90's). I thought she was about the same age as me. Very good looking and talented woman.
I am surprised. I grew up watching these talk shows. I did not realize that as late as 1975, Gary Moore was hosting To Tell the Truth...or rather, the revival of To Tell the Truth, because the original went off the air in the late 60's.
Fascinating! One girl claimed she went to the Putney School where my son went and Ally Sheedy actually married my high school classmate David Lansbury- yes, her nephew!
I have the DVD of War Games and she had an interview on it saying she still doesn't have a computer and didn't know much about them. I wonder if she still uses a type writer.
I am only a cpl years older than Ms Sheedy. I always had such a crush on her in all of her movies. If I heard she was in a movie (too many to list - but the breakfast club is one of the more well known) I watched it. It appears I can sport an intelligent and unique lady..
