I'm new to this channel, but I've seen some of your reviews now and I find them great! Looking forward to seeing more! As for Nightcap, you're right that it is somewhat reminiscent of Early Morning Pipe - this is by design. When Dunhill first released these tobaccos in the early 50's, it was actually a trio of English blends meant to cover the whole day. Early Morning Pipe as a light English for the start of the day, then The Apéritif which was more to the medium in strength and nicotine to smoke in the late afternoon prior to dinner, and then full-flavoured and stronger Nightcap to round off the day. All three were different takes on English blends with varying components in varying degrees. This was when Dunhill made their tobaccos in-house, then Dunhill ceased to manufacture tobacco themselves and licensed production to Murray's of Belfast in 1981. Murray's was bought by British American Tobacco (BAT) in the late 90's and they decided to close Murray's down in 2005. After a brief hiatus production of the Dunhill tobaccos shifted to Orlik/STG in Denmark, under license from BAT. When BAT decided to drop the Dunhill tobaccos in 2017, the blends were after a while reaquired by STG themselves. As STG had bought the Peterson tobacco brand in 2018 (which they too had produced under license earlier), they decided to re-release the Dunhill tobaccos under the Peterson brand. They are virtually the same as they've been since 2006. Though some of the Dunhill tobaccos that STG had released in the later years, such as Durbar and Apéritif, have yet to be released as Peterson tobaccos. Possibly they never sold as well as the other ones. The closest tobacco I've found to match Apéritif today is Robert McConnell's Original Oriental. It's very similar to the STG produced one.
New piper here and I just got this. First bowl, and never before have I had a Latakia or perique. This blend is just fabulous. Not many other words, you hit the nail on the head. Peppery, musty is a good term you threw in as well. I'm not well palated yet but it's just fabulous.
Ashton Artisan's Blend is indeed probably the closest one to Nightcap in design. It has the exact same components. What really set that one apart from Nightcap was that, until a few years ago, it also contained Syrian Latakia, a leaf that has since passed into legend. Now it only has Cyprian Latakia, but I'm glad to have had the opportunity to smoke it while it still had Syrian. A fantastic blend on its own and a great alternative to Nightcap.
I'm an old guy ... started smoking Early Morning and Night Cap in the early 1980's. I just wish I had thought of cellaring some way back in the day. The art work is slightly different ... there used to be a 1/4 moon in the picture, with the night cap hanging from it. And yes, the nic is fairly high in this blend.

IMO...This is a strong taste and has a very high vitamin N hit. I can't smoke entire bowl by itself. This is the strongest vitamin N hit blend that I have smoked. This tends to knock me down or get a headache if I do. I have to blend it with another Latakia blend. Taste is pretty good. 965 is lower taste and N hit, which I prefer. If you are not good with a strong vitamin N hit, then I strongly recommend not to smoke this really fast or retrohale. Maybe start with a half bowl to test your tolerance to it. Tastes good, burns nice, but watch the vitamin N hit.
Easy way to date the formerly dunhill blends is to look at the code on the back of the tin. On the top right are some number. The first 2 are the year, the second 2 are the day and the third 2 are the month.
I got rid of alot of my SPC blends, as I dont care much for crumble cake nor their way of processing tobaccos but I think I kept a tin of PP aside. I actually havent tried it!

By far my favorite English I could smoke it all day. I haven't cellard any though I try. If it's there I'm gonna smoke it 🤪. I believe I heard you say one time that you didnt like Seattle pipe club plumb pudding because it tastes fermented I agree. How your weekend goes great and your steps ordered of the Lord!
Thanks gentlemen! I wondered why it smelled a little off! I'm a new piper and I'm trying to find my thing. I've heard a lot of suggestions from videos and looking things up online. I am a bourbon backwoods cigar guy. I tried a bourbon borkum riff and it is not very good. I got spc plum pudding special reserve apple brandy barrel aged "Christmas spirit" and it is not terrible but definitely not like what I'm used to. I'm looking into old toby and early morning pipe as maybe a good start because I am a fan of lotr and the hobbit. As well as the tobacco smoked on set of lotr called "PETER STOKKEBYE 24 NOUGAT" or close to that haha. I also heard the haunted bookshelf is good? Help. 😅😂

Good question! Im still mulling through J.N.D Kelly's "Early Christian Doctrines". My wife and I are reading together "Yours till Heaven: The Untold Love Story of Charles and Susie Spurgeon". And Im about to wrap up "The Middle Ages" by Morris Bishop.

I really want to say something really aggressive about how pretentious this review is. But I can't because I live in a state where I can buy weed everywhere, carry a gun without a permit but I can't mail order pipe tobacco!!! And every tobacco store near me has only house blends or walls of RYO pipe tobacco.i can't really comment as to what this tobacco taste like. Fuck, I'd cook someone dinner for a tin of Irish flake!!!
How is he pretentious exactly? He seems like such a down to earth dude. I feel sorry for your situation though bro, the worst my state did was pass a special excise tax on online bought pipe tobacco and cigars, not much but enough to be a pain. And i thought that was bad.
