TK had the magical ability to be able to laugh at himself; which allows us to laugh at ourselves as well. The world is a bit dimmer when we lose individuals like TK 😔💕
This is what I read the other day about the meaning behind this song. I thought it was worth sharing. Written by Toby Keith. We'd been pheasant hunting in Dodge City, [Kan.], so I already had [the TV show] Gunsmoke on my mind. And the town had a few things in there that ... they played off that. And I think we were actually at a place called the Long Branch or Miss Kitty's Saloon -- something to do with Gunsmoke. It was a steakhouse and combo, five o'clock kind of thing. We're all in hunting clothes, there's 20 guys, and they're feeding us. This highway patrolman who I'd met on this trip, his name was John ... He jumps up, and he was probably 45 or 50 back then. And he runs over by a 25-year-old cowgirl, and he says he was gonna show how he can bust a move. She turns him down, and then a few minutes later, he comes back and says she don't dance. So they're giving him a bunch of steam over it. So that was not quite 15 minutes later, a young cowboy comes in, and off they go on the dance floor. Everybody's making fun of him. And somebody says, "John, I guess you should've been a cowboy." I thought, "I oughta write "Should've Been a Cowboy."" I didn't know what to do with it. So I thought, 'I betcha never heard Marshall Dillon say he had any woman problems, 'cause Miss Kitty was always knocking his back door down.' I started writing it, and it grew into Jesse James and riding shotgun and Gene [Autry] and Roy [Rogers]. It all happened in about 20 minutes. l
In the beginning he said Marshall Dillion never hung his hat up at Kitty's place. Kitty owned the saloon & loved the hero Marshall on the old TV show 'Gunsmoke'. And the "Gene & Roy' comments are about Gene Autrey & Roy Rogers, who were old singing cowboy actors with TV shows & movies when I was growing up in the 50's & 60's. Gene Autry is famous for his version of 'Rudolf the red nosed reindeer'. It was written in 1939 but recorded for the first time in 1949, by Gene.
This was the most played song of the 90s, and worth every bit of it. Toby is a legend. He will turn anyone into a country fan that doesn't like country or has never heard it. My late mother was a huge Toby fan so I've known the words to all of his hits and some that never made it to radio and I've never stopped listening to him, but I've been listening to him non stop since his passing. And I had no idea he had stomach cancer. My wife told me he died and I was stunned. Fly high cowboy. We
The reference to Gene and Roy singing campfire songs was about the singing cowboys in western movies of the 1940's and 1950's - Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. The reference to Miss Kitty was to the character of Miss Kitty, who ran a saloon in the radio and television show "Gunsmoke" in the 1950's. She was Marshall Matt Dillon's girlfriend but he never asked her to marry him.
After his first album, he had greater control over his videos and they were usually very funny and always entertaining, but it was this song that launched his illustrious career. His references in this song are to cowboys famous in early westerns that also sang. Gene Autry was dubbed "The Singing Cowboy" and later, Roy Rogers, was also a very notable singing cowboy.
I love the story that he told when he wrote this song on a hunting trip in Dodge city Kansas. He said a friend of theirs on the trip was trying to get a lady to dance with him at this roadhouse steakhouse. She turned him down and the guy said well I guess you should’ve been a cowboy. Toby said to himself I’m gonna write that! I Used to cruise to this in my first car! RIP. I hope there’s plenty of beer for your horses in Heaven. 💙🍻🐴🐴
Why haven’t you done “American Soldier “, yet? It’s iconic! It was #1 with the troops overseas. I dare you to not cry! Also…I’m in it, so no excuses, right? 😅😊
Just came across your channel Jamel. I wasn’t searching for Toby Keith but was watching your video about the little girl whose doll filmed her adopted mom pushing her into the road. I just wanted to thank you for being diverse with your content and being a genuinely good person! I subscribed!!! 🎉❤
I'm glad he grew out of that mullet ha ha. Toby was one of the greats. What great about Country is a lot of them know how to make a funny song and serious song.
Met him back in the 90's when he played at at Rodeo in Jackson,Ms. He was a huge guy 6'2/6'3 and 220/230. My Mom died from Cancer back in 2022 and she looked skinny like Toby did when he died. It's extremely sad to see someone deuterate.
According to Toby Keith the song title came from his time when he was working in the Oil Fields. He was with his friends at a bar and one of his friends tried to get with this woman and she shot him down, his friend told Keith "I should've been a cowboy.".
My brother Tim Keller died in 2000 45 yrs old from pancreatic cancer. Had the same build same facial features. Good hearted guy. There is a reason God takes these beautiful people. Rest in peace to my idol Toby Keith U should read the story about how this song Was wrote He was on a hunting trip in Kansas and the group he was with went to a bar and one of his buddies asked a girl to dance and she denied him but a guy in a cowboy hat asked her and she went with him and someone yelled “You Should’ve been a cowboy!” And he went back to the hotel and wrote it by the bathtub
Jamal, before you leave the Toby Keith rabbit hole, pleease watch the video "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)". Toby was a true patriot and loved our troops. He made 11 trips overseas to entertain them. He wrote this song after 9/11 for our troops. He was finally convinced to record and release it for all of us. Here's the link to the best version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ruNrdmjcNTc.html Thanks, man.
Hi @Jamell_AKA_Jemal, here is the short version of the story behind Should Of Been A Cowboy from Toby Keith himself. In this video you can see it was getting towards the end of his life by how thin he is. He went from 230 lbs down to 130lbs. Anyways here it is. He was a great song writer. You are right he has the entire package. Have you already reviewed Crying For Me? It's a song he wrote for his best friend Wayman Tisdale that played in the NBA and won I believe a gold medal along with having some musician talent. Warman died of cancer. Toby wrote the song to sing at his funeral but wasn't able to because it was just to hard on him. Toby says Wayman was the closest person he knew that was perfect. It's a beautiful tribute to him. I hope they are up in Heaven having a good time 💕 Enjoy the short 1 min clip. I'll look if you have already done Crying For Me. It's a great video showing love for his brother. Thank you for your videos, I've started watching them. God Speed. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6QJeCBgJ1Yk.htmlsi=e1uekoNJUASmPdy8

I should’ve been a virtual astronaut… 😂 I say that to be funny but I actually seen this “title” thrown around quite a bit.. “Virtual Astronaut” “Virtual Astronomer” “Virtual Music Conductor”……. ?????
Look into his bus songs, and USO songs... such as starkissed, never smoke with Willy again, Taliban, shitty golfer, call a marine, and get the f#@k out of my car!
