In greek , it is ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ Η ΘΑΝΑΤΟΣ And it has 9 syllables so that's why we have 9 lines on our flag , and the cross represents the Jews. The white color represents the birds of freedom and the blue color of the sky.

When the Germans warned the Athenians about helping Jews, my grandparents said "Yes" when they were asked by three people standing on their doorstep who asked "We are Jews, will you help us?" The man, his wife and her brother lived with our family for 3 years until the Germans were driven out of Greece. They all survived to move to Israel in 1948 and raise a family. I am so proud of my grandparents for doing that. Their answer to German compliance was OXI.

As an Italian who had the immense luck and privilege to study and learn the Ancient Greek language, poetry, tragedy and culture I feel very obliged to them and I love them as much as I love my own life. There will be no light in this world without the contribution of people like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Aeschylus, etc. I feel like we're all Greeks after all. Oh, and btw Greeks and Italians get along very well too, lol... They give the best parties and we love to party alongside them, lol.

The point is that Greeks, during our history, had saved Europe two critical times which, certainly, would had been a turning point in the history of this continent. The first one was against Perseans and the second one was against "Germans". But the reason we did that wasn't because we had been obliged to save the rest of the countries. The reason we did that was because Hellas is the light which illuminates everything that is right in this muddy world. So, it was and still is our duty to fight against anyone who wants to bring the world into darkness and chaos. That's our nature. The rest of Europe prospered, because we had the courage and the "sthenos" to stand against an enemy, who had made countries like France and Austria surrender hands-down. Now, after all our struggles, people of Europe mock us. They call us lazy, naive, beggars who keep asking for money in order to save their collapsing economy. I won't get into details about how we ended up into this terrible situation. Anyone with a common sense and a little observation can understand that. But, stay assured. This light will never fade. And when the time comes and darkness starts spreading again, we will be there to say "NO" to the tyrants. Because that's our nature and always will be.

Greece's most important contribution to WW2 is that they were the 1st country to win the Axis (Fascist Italy) as it's referred on the video pretty accuratelly. The battle of Crete was also very important as the Cretans fought really hard. This had a result as Nazis delayed in Crete and tried to invase Russia during the heavy winter instead of the middle of the summer as they wanted to. Russian weather conditions, together with the exhaustion of the Battle of Crete, made the task of the Red Army easier.

WHY THE GREEKS? - The BEST COLLECTION of PODCASTS and RU-vid VIDEOS for sites.google.com/site/flagenglish/-why-the-greeks---the-best-collection-of-podcasts-and-youtube-videos-for === Whenever we speak of ancient Greece and the achievements of their civilization, we inevitably find ourselves asking the question “Why the Greeks?” What was it that led this numerically small people of the Mediterranean to emerge first from the Archaic stage, in which all other ancient peoples were at a standstill, and strive towards the accomplishments of the Classical period? To explain the singularity of ancient Greek civilization, we identify something that no other people had at the time as the baseline value of the ancient Greeks: the capacity to question. That is to say, while the predominant values of other peoples could be summed up in the view that “we must hand down to our children the world we inherited from our forefathers,” the ancient Greeks were the first to challenge this perception, by submitting to judgment those ideologies and convictions that had been passed on to them. This is the common starting point for philosophy and democracy. But such questioning at the time, unlike today, was far from the norm; it could not have appeared on its own, as it presupposes an inner tendency of people to wish to surpass certain limits. And this disposition for transcendence goes hand-in-hand with the element of competition: the desire to be tested, to confront, change, overturn and improve. In such a context, extrapolating our thoughts, one could say that a key concept for understanding and explaining ancient Greek civilization isthe idea of agon (struggle, contest, competition). Thus, questioning and agon were part of a single viewpoint, an overall life stance, which pervaded all manifestations of ancient Greek life, permeated all activities and was the driving force behind all expression of culture. In ancient Greek society, the concept of agon underlay the view that anything can be achieved as the result of effort, healthy rivalry and noble competition. Often called the "birthplace of civilisation", Ancient Greece heralded numerous advances in philosophy, science, engineering and mathematics which have shaped our understanding of the modern world. Western civilization has been influenced by many cultures, but his birth took place in ancient Greece. Apart from philosophers such as Aristotle and Socrates, Olympian gods, the beginnings of democracy and conquerors such as Alexander the Great, Greece brought as a contribution to mankind cool ideas that enriched the art of architecture and construction. Our hearts have been moved by the tragedies of Aeschylus and Euripides. Our minds have been opened by the histories of Herodotus and Thucydides. Our understanding of the world and our place in it has been expanded by Socrates and Aristotle. Most of all, we’re indebted to Greece for the most precious of gifts -- the truth, the understanding that as individuals of free will, we have the right and the capacity to govern ourselves. For it was here, 25 centuries ago, in the rocky hills of this city, that a new idea emerged. Demokratia. Kratos -- the power, the right to rule -- comes from demos -- the people. The notion that we are citizens -- not servants, but stewards of our society. The concept of citizenship -- that we have both rights and responsibilities. The belief in equality before the law -- not just for a few, but for the many; not just for the majority, but also the minority. These are all concepts that grew out of this rocky soil. Of course, the earliest forms of democracy here in Athens were far from perfect. The rights of ancient Athens were not extended to women or to slaves. But Pericles explained, “our constitution favors the many instead of the few…this is why it is called a democracy.” Athenians also knew that, however noble, ideas alone were not enough. To have meaning, principles must be enshrined in laws and protected by institutions, and advanced through civic participation. And so they gathered in a great assembly to debate and decide affairs of state, each citizen with the right to speak, casting their vote with a show of hands, or choosing a pebble -- white for yes, black for no. Laws were etched in stone for all to see and abide by. Courts, with citizen jurors, upheld that rule of law. Politicians weren’t always happy because sometimes the stones could be used to ostracize, banish those who did not behave themselves. But across the millennia that followed, different views of power and governance have often prevailed. Throughout human history, there have been those who argue that people cannot handle democracy, that they cannot handle self-determination, they need to be told what to do. A ruler has to maintain order through violence or coercion or an iron fist. There’s been a different concept of government that says might makes right, or that unchecked power can be passed through bloodlines. There’s been the belief that some are superior by virtue of race or faith or ethnicity, and those beliefs so often have been used to justify conquest and exploitation and war. But through all this history, the flame first lit here in Athens never died. It was ultimately nurtured by a great Enlightenment. It was fanned by America’s founders, who declared that “We, the People” shall rule; that all men are created equal and endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights. The basic longing to live with dignity, the fundamental desire to have control of our lives and our future, and to want to be a part of determining the course of our communities and our nations -- these yearnings are universal. They burn in every human heart.

Afterwards they moved to Israel, settled down and had families. There are generations alive today because of my grandparents and I am so proud of the stand they took to save these lives.

That wasn't an act of courage but of ignorance. Greeks are great in many things but economic education is not of them. Greece collapsed because it was the only developed country out of the top 100 in economic freedom (130th). That would be understandable (no one is perfect) if we didn't refuse to reform. When you refuse to reform the system that bankrupted you, you are asking for trouble

Even though Greek army resisted and finally won facist Italy at October 1940 after the OXI day, the Nazis achieved to invase Greece through the Greek-Bulgarian borders, as long as Bulgaria was friendly to nazis at that time. Despite the German occupation, Greeks kept resisting. The stronger resistance became from the Greek communists who fought all together under the Greek People's Liberation Army. Of course, many citizens who were not communists joined the army, as the wanted to help Greece fighting back. Needless to say, that even a small number of Italians soldiers, after losing the Greek-Italian war, joined the Greek People's Liberation Army to help with their experience and knowledge. The resisted till the end of war and after that, all these "great" leaders of the past, Churchill etc helped to destroy this army because they had claim too much gun power. Greek communists was arrested, tortured, or killed. Even Napalm bombs were used to destroy them. What I really want to say is that i'm tired of pompous words from Greece's "allies" when Greece has suffered a lot because of them. Till now.

Now now, what really happened to the Greek communists after the war was they started an immediate war in Greece to take over for Communism. It involved Communists kidnapping children and forcing them to become soldiers. It was a war nearly lost because of the weakened condition of Greece whose population was starved under Nazi occupation,

Wow I couldn’t stop crying. Υιαγια is 100 and is in her final days. Her roots are Cretan. They lived in Chios and my παππού was part of the ragtag brigade that breathed ΟΧΙ into action. My dad would not have been born if πάππου Δημήτρη didn’t return. He had to sell candles outside his namesake church in Thessaloniki in order to afford the καράβι σπίτι. Ζήσαμε λέει η Γιαγιά. She never received the 100 year President letter. Is that automatic or you apply ?

We have to say that the OXI said by Greeks... The dictator couldn't do anything else except to communicate this oxi to all over the WORLD. ALSO each time we had didactorism we was in better way than with nowadays democracy, why? Because there are no democracy now in the planet. The art of politics is to make you believe that you have rights and you are free.... But free in democracy was only ancient Athenians. Macedons had Kingdom with kings. Spartans the same only Athenians had democracy at its best. Now we are all slaves under a worldwide king... The Money King
