A beautiful production by the "OXI Day Foundation" in the US on the "cultural gene" of Philotimo, a character virtue founded on the same values that elevated the word Philosophy to a universal human expression. www.philotimo.org
I found a good example of what filotimo is. It is this little extra that you do outside your typical duty. ''A man was asked to paint a boat. He brought his paint and brushes and began to paint the boat bright red as the owner had requested. As he painted, he noticed a small hole in the boat and quietly repaired it. When he finished painting, he took his money and left. The next day, the owner of the boat came to the painter and presented him with a nice check, much larger than the payment for the painting. The painter was surprised and said "You have already paid me to paint the boat sir!" “But this isn't about the paint. It's to repair the hole in the boat." “Ah! But it was such a small service... surely it is not worth paying me such a high sum for something so insignificant.” “My dear friend, you don't understand. Let me tell you what happened: “When I asked you to paint the boat, I forgot to mention the hole. “When the boat was dry, my children took the boat and went fishing. “They didn't know there was a hole. I was not at home at the time. “When I came back and noticed that the boat had been taken, I was desperate because I remembered that the boat had a hole in it. “Imagine my relief and joy when I saw them coming back from fishing. “Then, I examined the vessel and found that you had repaired the hole! “See, now, what have you done? You saved my kids life! I don't have enough money to pay for your 'little' good deed."
You will know a greek from his philotimo. Every human who has philotimo comes from his origine, the ancestors, the roots, the ground, the land, the spirit of ancient Greece. If you visit Greece, you will feel it in the air you breathe. You will find it everywhere in the greatest poeple of the Earth. ❤❤❤Love you Greece
I am half Greek. Every time I listen to this I feel emotional and proud to be Greek. I think every human being can listen to this and if it grabs at your heart then you have truly understood it's meaning, all of the meanings, the answers, the goodness, the practices, kindnesses, the way of life as we know it should be, and can be. When you listen to the beauty of the words spoken, and what value one's life has with PHILOTIMO.
I can’t believe I’m 33 and never heard this word before today watching this video. Maybe that’s why my Greek family has so many problems lol. Not enough philotimo. Love this so much. ❤️ God bless!
So proud and honored to be Greek. So proud of the Greek people, today, who are showing an over abundance of Philotimo by helping the Syrian refugees, without a second thought, despite the crash of their our country's economy. That is true Philotimo right there. But, you don't have to be Greek to have Philotimo. We all have it in us. Such a beautiful video. Zheto h Ellas! 🇬🇷🇬🇷
Philotimo... such a perfect perfect word... its when one sits and thinks with HIMSELF, and weighs what is TRUTHFULLY right and wrong, what he KNOWS deep down in his core that is truthfully right and wrong, taking ALL things into consideration, past, present, future situations, not forgetting the good qualities exhibited in the past and not just focusing on some present bad situation, its appreciation, compassion and finally making that perfect honorable decision. Philotimo contains no selfishness, no scheming, no strategy, no back-stabbing... its understanding someone else, as if they were you yourself. It goes beyond words... its compassionate justice, its heart, mind and soul working together. When people contain this quality of philotimo, there's no way they can't work through a problem or conflict they may have, you win some, you loose some... but you always have a clean conscience, and THAT'S a victory to be proud of.
And here's how philotimon can be exploited to take advantage of others, cited in a hope that it will better explain what that concept is. It was known that Hercules, despite his unconceivable strength, wasn't so bright after all. So one of the Argonauts, once they all got on board, and before they set sail to Colchis, says to him: -- Hercules, is it true that you are soooo strong, that you are able to oar our ship straight to Colchis *all by yourself* ? -- Hercules: Of course I am, what did you think. Just watch me. Some months later, when they had finally reached their destination and got on shore, another Argonaut approached him and said to him: -- You know Hercules, I feel guilty, I must confess that we may have taken advantage of you. -- Hercules: Oh yes now, I may be a bit dum, but not *that* dum. I really enjoyed oaring the ship all the way to here :)
@@8ThetaSound8 But Hercules actually wasn't taken advantage of. His Filotimo didn't lead him to become a victim of anyone's tricks. He said it himself, he knew all along what they were trying to do but he didn't care. He thought it was fun. If he chose to row of his own free will, then he wasn't their victim. He chose an action that they wanted him to do yet he wasn't the "loser". And that was the point of that story -- his strength (not in muscles but in character) is what showed. He didn't need to prove to these people who he was, he already knew tha himself and that was enough. It didn't matter if they convinced themselves that he rowed because they had beaten him in cleverness. Their opinions didn't matter to Hercules. And he "won" in another way too -- his choice to row made them realize and admit their wrongdoing by the end. That is the result of Hercules' Filotimo. When we choose to act out of Filotimo (out of love for what's right and honorable) it helps others while also keeping our own minds/souls clean from pettiness, vanity, ego, and unhealthy pride. The sacrifice that is made out of filotimo causes the loss of some things (surface things) for the sake of gaining much more important things (honor, respectability, the trust of others, a clear conscience, etc). There is such deep beauty in filotimo. ❤️
@@SusanaATX My dear Libersana, there's a mysterious concept that goes by the weird name of: "humor". Ever heard of anything like that? :) It is actually a _rejection_
PHILOTIMO: To stand up for what is right in the face of hardship, evil, adversity and fear. This, even more so when one is not harmed directly by these.
the beautiful thing about this philotimo is this, it is a principal that is applicable for EVERYONE. No matter nationality, status, or past life experiences that have lead far too many down wrong, selfish, self-destructive paths. The Apostle Paul stated about ones who do not have law do by nature the things of the law.....THEY DEMONSTRATE, the matter of the law to be written in their hearts. Romans 2:14,15. Romans 15: 1-3. The master Christ Jesus summed it up this way Matthew 22: 34-40 the whole law hangs on these two things; love of Jesus father, Jehovah God, with our whole heart, mind and being, and our neighbors our self....also Matthew 7:12 the Golden Rule to treat others as you would have them treat you.... How wonderful, the Greek language has a unique word that embodies the entire intent of these truths in one word. Philotimo!
Yet he stayed to die instead of fleeing (as he was offered), in obedience to the laws, al his life he honored the law , soo he couldn't betray them for personal value. That showed his filotimo. He gave us also a great dialogue (Faidon) that speaks for the soul and the god. With many many sentences that alone could be studied . Like: "they can kill me, but they can't harm me". And here we went to the tragic aspect of life, that most times , we have to be tested to prove our best value. So his story doesn't end, where your comment ends. It's only starting and it's a beauty and proudness derived by his act in all of us
Love the video, and everything about the word... I have gone to great lengths to incorporate it into my life... on a side note, can anyone tell me the jingle in the background, I absolutely love the song and have been searching with no luck to find it...
A great contribution! Thank you! You guys from the foundation please extent this video with some more recent expressions of philotimo like the Greek people's respond to the refuge crisis in the Aegean Sea.
It is a way to live life, it is not perfect, it can be improved by people by more of us partaking in it. i note comments that are negative. i would just say work on it, People have certain levels of intelligence that is given to them but knowledge is down to hard work. Philotimo encompasses both along with so much more, It breaks down borders and encourages people to be human. Friends of Honour - be safe, be brave, be respectful, work hard and be happy
Alexander The Great Spread Greek Culture throughout the known world. Having Ptolemaic dynsaty which lsted in Alexandria Egypt and then spreading Greek culture through Egypt and then through the whole middle east into india which has Greek influence as well as Alexander wanted to conquer Rome before it has gotten big, he passed away and then Rome was mostly Greek influenced just like the rest of the world
Oh yes it very darn well *does* make you Greek, if by true Greek is meant one who *participates* in Greek education. (Emphasis added: Not one who *has* a Greek education, but one who *participates* in it).
Oh that is so cute ! If you want to be Greek you can be Greek go to the Greek Orthodox church and get baptized it's a beautiful religion it's pure! The Greek priests can marry you know what I mean? They marry women they have children it's all good. My yia yia had the priest over for dinner Sunday nights after church. I was too little to remember. That's not my Greek last name.
No my dear friend. Our Latin brothers where practical people, we are for the ideal. To get a better idea, well maybe you should check this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wJaycp8eX-g.html
Philotimo has all the makings for a better world - a Utopian ideology to bring about of a new, caring, considerate and democratic society that could only ever have its roots in Greek culture. Philotimo is an invisible thread that unites people in order to create a cohesive populous and takes in people’s skills and abilities as something to be acknowledged and shared freely for the betterment of all. All good stuff - the only thing I do not agree with is the aspect of physical battle - such methods are outdated and simply wrong. Wars, in my humble opinion (and I’m sure I’ll get plenty of abuse for my comment) should be resolved through two democratic devices: words and sanctions and if something doesn’t seem to be working - coming together collectively with like-minded countries and ring-fencing the offending country to add more pressure diplomatically with not a weapon in sight. It is 2020 folks - we should be laying our weapons down. Everything else about Philotimo sounds absolutely wonderful so bring it on 🌟
I invite you to South Crete as my guest. Every night we will hang on the beach staring at the sky, food and drinks are on me. You will change your mind immediately.
*DON'T YOU HAVE PHILOTIMO? PHILOTIMO
Its very sad that φιλότιμο has been lost here in greece especially since at least 10 years ago and beyond, now people have become very egotistical, all they think about is what they will get for themselves when giving something. It is the very sad reality... Now we have something that is called φαίνεσθαι which means people fake how their life looks just to gain trust and to seem friendly.
it was not the greeks that stopped the nazi`s, it was the Australian army that first stopped them. The Aussie`s were also the first to stop the japanese.
I have great respect for the Aussies. They came to my island of Crete to fight against the Nazis in the battle of Crete and they never saw their homes, wives or children again. Never forget.
PHILOTIMO is much greater than who conquered the Nazi's. It's a way of life. Giving without expecting anything in return, honor, truthfulness, sacrifice, greatness, philanthropy, Love not hate.
This is impressive in terms of understanding the word. But I find it highly offensive that you found only one part-Greek woman to quote (and very briefly another one). Males predominate. Highly offensive to us Greek women. In addition, the choice of CEOs to explain this uniquely Greek word really insulted me. What about the rest of us, the people who really live this concept? Written by a Greek-born author living in American
The ancient Greeks believed that the education of women was a foolish and even dangerous thing. Their legendary wisdom has never been made more evident than it is here in the misanthropic writing of Ms Whitley. I believe it was Demosthenes who wrote “A man who teaches a woman to write should know that he is providing poison to an asp".
@@lesterlong5433 Yes, indeed he was sir. But, not all Greeks thought so, and Demosthenes had the women of Athens in mind. I truly suggest that one should also come to know quotes by the women of Sparta. Here's some: erenow.net/ancient/on-sparta/8.php
Return all that was stolen from Our Greek Nation and all the damages that occurred from WW2 from the so called loving Germany and other nations and never forget that Greeks are a peaceful nation with " filotimo" and humanity to all.
+Kostas Kastidis "Return all that was stolen from Our Greek Nation and all the damages that occurred from WW2" Nobody stole anything now. You make idiotic random assumptions. The fact is that Greeks(no general terms here) made this ludricrous myth of German debts as an a poor irrational excuse to act like children. You are illogical. Your assumptions are based on Greece's complete illiteracy and ignorance. You can't base a supposed win on such utter ridiculous nonsense at all. "from the so called loving Germany" Sorry to burst your bubble, but you actually make a lot of unfounded and moronic assumptions. Who said is from Germany? The name. "Germain" is in fact French, so much for your pitful ignorance. Also why the hostility? The man said you respectfully to use it and gave you a morale boost to contribute getting Greece out of crisis. "never forget that Greeks are a peaceful nation with " filotimo" and humanity to all." Nope. Wow, you are actually beyond damn in fact *WRONG*. Just because you have the ability to misuse the word "forget" in your illogical pathetic rambling here as you imply that it's somehow not false what you said and it's a memory, meaning an accurate presentation of things, which is actually in fact NOT doesn't make your mindblowing stupidity less of a mindblowing stupidity and you *FALSE*. Admit you are just claiming upon claiming illogical laughable garbage, so we can go forward. It's definetely not true. Actually Greeks in fact were pretty much attacking and imperialistic since day one and the fact they attacked the native population of Hittite empire and Magna Grecia proves that. And most Greeks I know today are extremely racist/dicriminating fucktards that mumble behind a keyboard unleashing their extreme dangerous narcissistic paranoid delusions especially the ethnicistic Greeks in Greece *cough* LeonAmarantos *cough*. They do whatever to "win" despite not realizing they are wrong even acting like total crying infants and tell me "they "know" I was beaten in school and I was spastic nerd" paranoid psychotic bullshit because I supported immigrants with logic and I didn't mindlessly bash them. Also... Alexander The Great and before you say anything to make a fool out of yourself more, yes he *DID* do extremely horrible shit, so you are retarded if you doubt that. War is not war without wounded and killed humans. However it's true that Greeks tended to wave war against their own people in the course of history. Ancient city-states and the Byzantine Empire are perfect examples. Battle of Economachy was a goddamn war. And the Ancient Greek word "filotimo" is undeniably, *NOT the same as modern one*. Clearly it meant like "courage, ambition, striving for dinstiction" back then. than "compassion" and the rest of the laughable delusion bullshit that Christians pulled from their ass later after Christianity conquered Mediterrenean. The "filotimo" nowdays is just a mentally challenged and utterly punchable fabrication and nothing more. The only thing it shares with the ancient one is just a fucking name. And the ancient one was a motivation, not "doing shit and not taking anything in return" or "mindless respect for your parents and so". There is a word for that. That's what is known in Ancient Greece and in modern world as "sheer stupidity" and "pure insanity" and the person who practise it in real life as "moron". And "ethos" just meant a set of personalities and behaviours. We are not at all a "peaceful nation". They are no "peaceful nations". That's an oxymoron.
+St. Germain we own nothing to the EU nation. The damage they did to us since ww1 and ww2 is bigger than what we own them today. We should be the ones who need to be funded not you!!!
Gwero Monitor Germans literally went into Greece and stole a whole bunch of gold and Ancient Greek artifacts and massacred millions of people. The Greeks were already native to Anatolia, you moron. They didn’t kill any of the Hittites and the Greeks that colonized Magna Graecia didn’t kill any of the native inhabitants (it was most likely uninhabited). You are a racist ignorant piece of shit and you need to open your mind. Philotimo means “love of honor” and the modern use pretty much has the same meaning as the Ancient one. Before you go spewing ignorant and racist bull shit like the keyboard warrior you are, go open a book.
+James X. Sorry, but what happened to their property, etc. of those taken to the camps? As to hiding everyone, 60000 were taken. So what percentage was then hidden? Please, we all know the truth, and we have to confront it, and deal with the reality. We are not Turks to deny that a genocide did not happen. Admit to what happened, and prevent such events in the future.
My late grandmother was a very beautiful lady up to the point where during the axis occupation both German and Italian officers would send each morning flowers in her doorstep. While she was keeping them at a distance, she was using those officers to save innumerous Jews, entire families, hiding Australians and Kiwis, while she was also working with the resistance to get intelligence and doing in general a lot more than that against the Nazis. At certain moment she even had to risk her life and had to kill a German -- she used to show me the revolver with which she did it, she would always keep that gun handy, hidden in a special drawer in my grandfather's desk. After the war was over, there came a time that she was in real bad need for some money to buy food for my mother, a child of 7 by then, as my grandfather couldn't provide as he had gotten very ill. So she thought of turning to a *very* wealthy Jewish family she had saved from certain execution by the Germans. When she asked their help, even though less than a few months had passed since then, the answer she got was: Who are you? We don't know you! Now regarding your question, what proof do you have that those "many" were "Hellenes"?
