I saw Todd mastering his craft in Modesto a couple weeks ago and as a drummer myself I'm amazed at his skills. The degree of difficulty, his dynamics and groove plus power is a treat to behold.
@Toby Bell Yes! There aren’t many drummers that I can watch/listen to over and over, but Todd is on that short list for me. Incredible to behold. I watch him and it’s almost like I have to go practice.
As a drummer myself, I can tell you how awesome it is to watch Todd make things look that smooth and effortless.. it ain't... And how bout that thrown stick recovery?? No panic... just grabbed the next stick out of the stick bag and kept right on rolling.... that's a pro... 🥁
Watching Todd is truly inspirational - he makes everything look SO smooth and easy. Then I go downstairs and try to replicate it, and I realize just how amazing his playing is. Then it gets frustrating, so I go watch another Todd video, and we go ‘round again! 😁
His stick breaks in two and one end goes flying at 3:33. Love the way he laughs and recovers with another stick, then looks around to see if the band noticed. Perfect playing!!!!
@@michaelengle9062yes, both are solid companies and stick breakage is going to happen regardless of manufacturer, but in my experience, I found that Vic Firth sticks held up much better to my playing than Pro Mark
I was at this show, second time Ive seen them and just as AWESOME as the first..I liked that this was in a much smaller venue as well! Long live STYX!!!
What else’s is there to say about Todd. He is a complete drummer , love watching him and hearing him play all DAY. He’s Musical, Dynamic, Powerful , A Groove Master
GOD I love this drummer I never payed much attention to him until these RU-vid videos. He’s got great technique and his drums sound amazing cause you’re getting a close look not coming out the fronts and he’s still having fun 🤩
I got a free demo video of his playing years ago when I bought either my DW pedals or Mapex snare (can't remember) and remember seeing just how fantastic of a drummer he was. Has been one of my faves ever since!
I was first exposed to Todd's drumming on the Return to Paradise concert, the same show where Styx pays tribute to their original drummer, John Panozzo, with a great rendition of 'Show Me the Way'. That whole show was fantastic, and back in 1997, was a treat to see almost all of the original members together again. Todd tore up the drumming that show, and I've been a fan ever since. Been a Styx fan since the 70's, but became a Todd fan (and I'm also a drummer), ever since I saw him on that tour/show! No one can replace John, but Todd stepped in and made Styx his own! Fantastic drummer!
First saw Todd 23 years ago and have marveled at his chops ever since. Truly watch every Styx performance I come across to marvel at the technique and enjoy the skill. Kudos still - great job, Todd!!
Not too many drummers play with a mixed grip these days. I'm a hack drummer, been playing for about 50 years, but when stuff gets really tough, I switch back to mixed. it's like Jonesy says in Hunt for Red October "When it gets confused, it runs home to mama." Excellent as always Todd.
Love it! I especially love when you'd throw in a fancy fill and glance over to your left (camera right) to look at someone with a "did ya like that?" smile on your face. Also, great recovery from that broken stick right near the ending crescendo. Bravo!!!
Todd looks like a typical dad/grandfather from any regular neighborhood in any city/state. I could see him mowing his own lawn and then heading to a show and amazing us all with his incredible talent.
Absolutely PHENOMENAL DRUM MASTER! Todd is the master of percussion, timing and expression! Amazing Todd! Hope to see you in a Master Class this Fall on the East Coast!!
Absolutely enjoyed this. Very smooth transition from traditional grip to match grip at 3:20. We had the pleasure of hearing you Live with STYX a couple times. Peace be with you
Thank you for sharing this, was amazed last year when we caught the show in Nor Cal Ironstone, really looking forward to seeing your again in So Cal in July. Rock on!!!
I have a photo I took of Todd that he signed in my office. I had a HS student doing a class project in my office recently and he saw the picture and he said, DUDE, Todd Sucherman is crazy good, best drummer I have ever seen. That kid is on my list for an A on his project!
Todd, you make being a badass drummer look effortless. You are the real deal. You jammed through the whole song with perfect timing as usual, but those quadruplets at the end were really tasty.
Swear to the drum gods that these vids have taken my traditional grip groove to the next level. Not that I’ll ever be at 11 like you but at 55 I need all the secrets that you’ve learned! Haaaa! I got a Long way to go man! Thanks for these.
Todd so influential to my drumming career. Thanks Todd, also Wanna add thanks for putting this video up with the fact you lose a stick it shows drummers that it happens and no one is perfect and yes it's OK to drop a stick.
Tommy Shaw sounds great! I love it when people make excuses for bad singers because they’re “old” (like late 50’s). No, it’s because they always sucked. Being late middle age doesn’t make you not be able to sing/play well. Look at a true professional like this. They get better.
