In this video we demonstrate how to elevate a toilet making it easer for people who have difficulty getting up from a low seat height. To do this you will need the following:
Toilet Riser Kit
www.vitalitymedical.com/toile...
accessibleconstruction.com/pr...
Channel Lock Pliers
www.grainger.com/product/2DYW...
wet/dry bucket vac (not required but makes draining a toilet easy)
www.lowes.com/pd/Project-Sour...
www.homedepot.com/p/Bucket-He...
Rags
The "Toilevator" kits usually come with two wax rings, but in instance where they do not or you are simply re-installing a toilet, they can be picked up at your local hardware store.

Thank you for a concise video with helpful tips. Purchased a Toilevator for use during surgery recovery, and hoping I can install it myself as my handyman is unavailable. Feeling brave after seeing your video. Thank you again:)

I appreciate the feedback and wish you a speedy recovery. If you don't have a wet vac, shut the water off, flush, quickly dump about 3 gallons (a bucket full of water) into the pot which will quickly drain out the rest of the water. Sponge up the remaining water. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

My husband and I installed the Toilevator today with only a minor hardware adjustment. Your video was playing throughout the installation! Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. You made it easy:) Kind regards and happy summer.

Being plastic it seems like the extender would shift on the tile even bolted down. I would be concerned the toilet and extender turning on the flange as people use the toilet. Usually people caulk a toilet at the base. Wouldn't running a bead of caulk around the base of both the toilet as well as the extender to lock everything in place?
@groutrx1415
@groutrx1415 2 года назад
The plastic extender is not ideal, but given the sanitary issues people have with traditional seat risers, it is a far better option. In terms of caulking around toilets, this is never a good idea for two reasons. The first id if the wax ring fails, the water becomes trapped and it is difficult to know if it is leaking because the water is trapped. The second reason is tile and grout alone do not waterproof a floor. it is the substrate underneath. Rarely do tile installers properly waterproof where the closet flange meets the floor and if the wax ring does fail and the water blocked from escaping due to caulk, it will make its way into the subfloor, rot the wood and cause staining on the ceiling below if it is not a first floor bathroom. Getting back to the the plastic riser, if you wanted to stabilize it a bit further, I would use a two part epoxy putty and put about two dabs to the front left and right of the riser. It will hold better than caulk and be easy enough to break off with a chisel. www.lowes.com/pd/J-B-WELD-WaterWeld-White-Epoxy-Adhesive/3389026?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-pnt-_-ggl-_-LIA_PNT_221_Glue-Adhesives-Caulk-Repair-_-3389026-_-0-_-0-_-0&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=Cj0KCQiA15yNBhDTARIsAGnwe0Vcrom9PNbxUEMMij2Zj_ptH0mp6fgJv3-bE4xYLNsBIIUWgWRHhAsaAgiHEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Could this riser be used in a basement bathroom application? I currently have a bathroom that has an elevated floor of about 7 inches to accommodate the toilet connection to the sewer drain. I want to eliminate that raised floor to increase the overall height of the room and still be able to have the toilet drain correctly. This would be a huge savings over the cost of a macerating toilet. The other fixtures (shower and sink) have other options for their drains so it is just the toilet that is a problem.
@groutrx1415
@groutrx1415 Год назад
Possibly, You would have to demo out the existing floor to see how the closet flange is positioned. If the drain pipe is not coming directly up from the floor, you may have to build a pedestal for your throne. Do you know where the main drain pipe is for your house relative to the basement toilet? If you email me some pictures of the setup, I can assist you with a plan on moving forward. d-morrison@gmail.com

Nice post. How much would you charge to change a wax ring on a toilet? Prob couldn't till you look at the situation. This situation... -No water shutoff accept at the breaker to the pump house. -toilet sitting on carpet and been rocking,liquid in insulation under home. -the line coming in that doesn't have a shut-off is that old PEX type of pipe:off white color. -nuts and bolts at bottom are totally rusted. Can you give me an estimate for this scenario? Lol.
@groutrx1415
@groutrx1415 Год назад
Where are you located? It sounds like you need more than a wax ring. If you are going to shut off the water, it is best to add a shutoff valve. Is the wood rotted underneath the toilet?
@JamesBrown-ei8wc

@@groutrx1415 I think I can get it. Had an issue with my other toilet, the seal between the tank and bowl. Replaced bolts washers and seals, and added a cutoff, 1/2-5/8 shark bite cutoff to metal flexible line. Luckily I had one of those pipe snips. I'm scared to look at the floor on the carpet one issue. I'm probably going to have to replace floor. Add a new flange ECT. I've got the tools it's just up to me now. 😰 If the floor isn't to bad , it shouldn't be to bad.

It should work. Without seeing what you are talking about it is difficult to tell. Closet flanges should sit on top of the flooring. How much higher is yours?

Wouldn't it be logical just to replace with taller bowl? It would save time and money, especially if it's leaking.
@groutrx1415

The standard ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) height toilets must have, a 17”-19” floor to bowl rim height, including the seat. In most cases, this is still too low for people with significant mobility issues to use. I'm not sure about the toilet in this video, but there have been more than a few ADA compliant toilets that have needed additional height. Keep in mind, a standard toilet height falls around 14.5" so an ADA compliant toilet doesn't add too much to the overall height of the seat. Regarding the replacing the toilet bowl if it is leaking, yes, that would be a good idea, but in this particular case, the bowl was not leaking. If you are considering raising a toilet, first consider the degree of difficulty the individual has in getting up from a standard chair (18"-20"). If that person has no difficulty getting up from 19", an ADA toilet will likely do the trick. If they have an issue at that height, that person will need some sort of riser.
@curiouskitten
@curiouskitten Год назад
@@groutrx1415 Thanks for the educational explanation on how it works from ADA standpoint. Just out of curiosity, would it be code compliant to raise the bowl with poured, formed, concrete on slab? Thanks again.
@groutrx1415
@groutrx1415 Год назад
@@curiouskitten Code varies from state to state but there shouldn't be any issue per se in having a raised closet flange embedded in poured concrete, though if you are doing this after a slab has already been poured, you will need to reinforce the newly poured pedestal that you are pouring with some type of structured metal that will extend into the slab to secure it properly and prevent it from crumbling. If you are truly committed to a toilet higher than 19", that would be optimal.

They must make different sizes of toilets. This standard height is far too low. Not good
