I know what Toki is. My best friend had a Lynx, and I played it a lot when I would come over for a visit. He also had a TRON arcade cabinet which I was eternally jealous of. I really like Blood Brothers. My local bowling alley had it, and I really liked its weird, anachronistic, western theme.
Great episode, I knew Toki would make for an interesting topic. Toki is one of those things I've been interested in ever since the genesis version was covered on classic game room. Of the versions covered here I have only really tried the NES, Genesis, and Switch versions with the Switch and Genesis versions having the most time put into them. Overall I would say these games aren't bad, just flawed, although the Switch version deserves some special criticism for releasing originally for $40 with how few options and features it has. Also if this somehow does legendary wings numbers I'll laugh my ass off.
I discovered Toki at the Pizza Hut on 76th Street (near Coldspring), in a cocktail cabinet. It was quirky, and the graphics were the biggest draw no doubt. Helped that I couldn't hear the music over the all of the room noise :D Rented it for the Genesis from Blockbuster (ironically within walking distance of that same Pizza Hut), and discovered how truly *rough* that game was/is overall. Amazingly, one of the few instances where the American boxart bests the Japanese Mega Drive version hands down, due to his wild, possessed gaze / lip curl combo. Picked up the remaster on Steam, and can honestly say it's the only way I'll play this game today. Blood Bros. is still fun though, played the crap out of that game when Time Out had one on location.
You nailed it, a remake of Ghouls and Ghosts would be great! Capcom's Trojan would also be a cool one to modernize. Maybe, just maybe Capcom will grant us these requests...
@@mortenera2294 Maybe, but I wouldn't hold out for anything beyond correspondence that says something like "Powered Up 1 sold like ass, so no, we aren't going ahead with Powered Up 2."
@@mortenera2294 I think part of it was that it was such an early PSP game that the user base wasn't big enough to move what they wanted. But it and Maverick Hunter X are both really underrated.
I played this game in the arcades when I was young and really loved it. I was lucky to get a phisical copy for the ps4. Thank you for the developers and publishers for releasing this and you for a great video 😊 👍
Here on Mexico City and its Metropolitan Area, the original was an staple in the early to mid '90s; along with any version of Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat 1 & 2, Prehistoric Isle and Snow Bros., it was one of those titles that were almost mandatory in each and every arcade, grocery and drugstore back in the day. On the other hand, the home versions were nowhere to be seen, and I only learned about them until years later, playing some of them via emulation.
Wow. Thank you for unlocking my buried memories. Used to play Cabal at the pizza place when I was young. As for Toki, I always thought it was kind of a weird game despite never actually playing it. Guess the spitting part was somehow a turn off. He reminded me of some simian version of Mr. Bucket popping balls out of his mouth. Also didn't know they made a modern version.
@@SameNameDifferentGame wanna know whats even more bizzare? Its one of the very few physical release download games to hit europe... And it also one of the lowest priced of any normal physical release games on the platform
03:18 PORTUGAL CARALHO!!! Sorry for my enthusiasm, but every time a Portuguese person sees the name of their country, this phrase inadvertently comes out of our mouth.
I love this game, I managed to finish it with just one credit in the arcades and I also had it on the NES. Unfortunately I can't have it on PS4 due to the region I live in. (TOKI AND NINJA WARRIORS ONCE AGAIN ARE ONLY AVAILABLE ON PSN IN EUROPE AND ASIA)
@@SameNameDifferentGame I have a European account. The problem is getting a card with a value in euros. They are very expensive, because my country's currency is very devalued. (BRAZIL)
Know what would be rad, but would never happen? A remake of the _Dungeons & Dragons_ arcade games, _Tower of Doom_ and _Shadow Over Mystara,_ either in a hand-drawn style, or in the same vein as _Dragon's Crown._
Wow I can't believe they did a remake, I first come across this on amiga 500. I would like to see a hand drawn remake of yoshis Island. Or just to be different biker mice from Mars. All the remade hand drawn games are always from same genre. Would be cool to see a racer, rock n roll racing could be cool too. Hmm christmas themed nostalgia I can only think of daze before christmas
Toki is one of those weird oddities that only videogames can achieve. A platfomer about a spitting ape sonehow getting one of sega's top teams to make a port of it to their system (reguardless of its below standards quality fron them) and somehow getting an HD coat of paint for modern consoles... Whats next? Bringing back the Cavemen Warriors/Ninjas Joe and Mac?
There was talk about golgoth studios doing a Joe and Mac remake after finishing Toki, although it was just talk since I don't believe golgoth even had the license yet.
Wow. I never thought this game would get any love. I really enjoyed the Genesis game back when I was in high school. Now? It's not "bad" so to speak, but it isn't "good" either.
The Genny version was and is the best. The song that repeats actually sounds good on there, plus there are many more stages over the arcade version, with breaks from the repeating music. Not even the remake holds a candle to it.
I agree with most of the reviews, but your Atari Lynx emulator really let you down. I had Toki for Lynx back in the day, and it's so much better than what was shown in this video. It's one of the few Lynx games to really scratch that itch for Japanese platforming action, honestly. Also, I like how the French remake really leans into the grotesqueness that was only hinted at in the original. If things were weird and vulgar before, they're ten times more bizarre here.
LOL, some Sega arcade games did the same BS, by having infinite continues in all of the stages except for the last one. I used a save state to beat both the 1st Shinobi & Wonderboy in Monsterland arcade games.......constantly starting over was just getting too annoying to me. They could just reuse the graphic of Marvel Vs Capcom 3 for the remakes of the Gdoul & Gargoyle Quest series. Hell, I really hope they would just put Gold Knights 1 & 2 on consoles/PC.
I was incensed at the Genesis game because here was a system that could handle a faithful port of the arcade game, and instead, they made an annoying "adaptation" like you'd see so often on the NES. And it's not even a good adaptation... the graphics are tiled to hell and the level designs are so indifferent. It's like Toki, fed through a fun extractor.
I owned the Lynx version back then, and I don't remember it being this bad, but maybe it was. The low FPS is really the worst part about it, when compared to the other versions.
@@SameNameDifferentGame This Ghouls N' Ghosts fan enjoyed the Lynx version. I never had controller response issues. It was my favorite until I bought the Switch remake. Also, don't know if you knew, but there was a 7800 version uncovered by Atari Age. I think it's been released to the public?
Hey, what's that game above zelda there? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k_mmDas3lPU.html And is it any good? Wow, TAD had great games! damn
Your Lynx emulator definitely sucks. My phone runs Handy better than whatever that garbage was you put on display. And way too harsh on Going Ape Spit. It was a solid rental.
Bro, the sound was skipping and was running at 3fps. Like the other guy said, Retroarch Handy will run perfectly, even on 2012 phones. If you didn't care, why bother even showing it? It defeats the whole purpose of the gimmick. It's a decent port, all things considered. Edit: I take everything I said back. It runs slow even on original hardware. My bad.
@@SameNameDifferentGame Thank you. You can clearly appreciate the time and effort I went in to crafting such an articulate and bespoke comment, possibly verging on the amount of time and effort it took you to make the video. I will continue my good efforts. I remember playing Toki as a child. Both Arcade and Genesis. I never remember being annoyed by the slow walking speed or music but I also don't remember TMNT being as bad as it actually is. Ahh to be a kid again..
@@sirkastic There are definitely games I've avoided playing again because of such things. Though I have no nostalgia for Toki, so you may yet find it good, if you did revisit it.
