I am finally moving out of my TINY and cheap Japanese share house!! As I move out I show you where I live in Tokyo and give you a tour of my accommodation in Japan! I know it looks like a very small room (and it is) but living in a share house in Japan as a foreigner has many advantages and disadvantages. I let you know what I like and don't like about my tiny Tokyo house. If you move further away from Tokyo you may find a bigger place! This is one of the reasons many people chose not to live in Tokyo. I hope this helps you know what to expect when you are moving to Japan!
A room in this Tokyo share house cost £350 a month and included all bills.
If you want to know more about the strange things that happen in share houses visit my friends blog:
www.johnmichaelmilton.com
Japan is the most exciting and culturally different place I have ever been to. It has so much to offer! I hope you can follow my journey and we can explore this incredible place together!

7 March 2019, Palermo, Sicily. I have watched dozens and dozens of videos about Japan on different RU-vid channels. The impression I have got is that Japan is a very advanced country on many levels but definitely crap on housing. And I'm not referring only to students houses and house shares but also to the houses than Japanese people, born and bred there, live in. Bathroom are so tiny that most bath tubs are half-length rather than full. So if you want to take a comfortable and relaxing bath after spending a day in a city with 34 million people you won't really be able to do that. Also, most bathrooms do not have windows meaning fresh air can never get in there. (And no, air conditioning devices and fans don't give you fresh air but only machine-processed air). Unless you own a drying machine you have to dry your clothes in ridiculously small spaces. Kitchen are so small that most households can't fit a dishwasher in, meaning that in technologically-advanced Japan you will have to hand-wash. Dishwashers are a rarity. For some mysterious reasons you are not allowed to put nails on walls for coat hangers and such so everything must be stored on the cabinet(s) available to you. I have seen videos of Japanese families of 4 where in their kitchen there is only 1 hob. I have seen videos of people telling that because of earthquakes many buildings tend to be built with very thin walls meaning that often the temperature indoor is more or less the same as the one outdoor so you get very cold houses in winter and very hot houses in the summer. Oh dear dear...that's not a good picture...anyway I am looking forward to watching your video where you will show us your new and more comfortable apartment, Marianna, and hope you will enjoy your personal bathroom, at last, and more comfortable, cosier and longer sleeping.

Not sure if you checked them yet but I recommend Oakhouse for apartments and social residences and GG house for share houses. @MariannaVlogs
@MariannaVlogs 4 года назад
Moving firms can be super pricey in Japan so what I did is make two separate trips with huge suitcases (on the train) and John helped me move everything. As it came furnished I didn’t have anything super large with me. If you have furniture/futons though I would really recommend a moving firm as they are very precise and everything is done so quickly and seamlessly. Here is a helpful link of English speaking companies and tips (not assuming you can’t speak Japanese - it just has a lot of useful information! 😆) resources.realestate.co.jp/living/list-of-english-friendly-moving-companies-in-japan-from-inexpensive-to-full-service/ I hope this helps, good luck with the move!! ❤️

I would rather call that place a dorm than a share house. I live in a share house, which is an actual house and I have four Japanese women as housmates at the border of Meguro and Setagaya. I have a proper room for myself (not as big as I got used to in Europe, but bigger than your dormroom in the video) and we have common areas, like kitchen, living room, and two bathrooms and two toilets. We don't meet two frequently because of the alternating schedules and there is never a crowd in the morning at the sink. It's not the cheapest share house, but my workplace pays for it, it's at a fancy neighbourhood, very safe, has a cute design and a house pet as well. My only problem until now was that there's a train railways behind the house but I got used to the noise, and that I live next to the washing machine, but I made them to set a time limit for washing, as my housemates found it the most comfortable to put their clothes into the washing and drier machine for a 5 hours program before going to bed xD Anyway, Northern Tokyo has quite a bad reputation among Japanese. I work in Yokohama, so for me, Southern Tokyo was the only option.
@MariannaVlogs
@MariannaVlogs 5 лет назад
Your share house sounds so nice! From the way you describe it, it has more of a proper homely feel to it. The washing machine sounds problematic though, I would hate the rattling sound during the night too 😂 And I agree, whenever I told my coworkers about the area where I live, they would get concerned. Northern Tokyo has a bit of a strange reputation with some I think.
@TamakiOtomo
@TamakiOtomo 5 лет назад
@@MariannaVlogs Yes, it's like a home but with nice strangers xD Now they don't wash during the nights, the housing agency is really nice and helps in cases like that, I didn't have to confront. I heard the worst part is Adachi there, but your station wasn't so far from there. Hope your new neighbourhood will be better. And yeah, shops around are important. They makes shopping easier, less tiring and it's just good to look at the shop windows while you are walking home :)

@MariannaVlogs
@MariannaVlogs 5 лет назад
The one I talked about and initially lived in was GG house. Although there are several drawbacks there, personally I still would have picked it when first moving here because it’s super cheap! Another one I can recommend is Oakhouse. There is also Sakura House and Borderless House but I have never personally dealt with those companies. One thing I want to say though is pick your location carefully! It’s a huge pain living away far from from everything. If you are looking at properties request to know the closest station to them and then figure out how far the main areas are (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo Station etc) and whether it is North Tokyo or South as Southern Tokyo is a bit more convenient in my opinion. Hope this helps!!

I had many problems with sharing space with people in an apartment where I shared living, kitchen,dinning and a yard. noise, smell,stealing etc. one time a cop with a police dog burst in and arrested a dope. the other time a mental guy moved in and destroyed his room in the first 30 minutes and he got arrested etc etc. no more sharing.

Omg same! I'm ok with sharing a house with other people, I can bear with it but sharing a bathroom is a no no for me. I'm planning to stay in Japan too to study for 2-3 years, is it better to get my own apartment or stay in a sharehouse since its cheaper?
@MariannaVlogs
@MariannaVlogs 5 лет назад
The bathroom is definitely a must for me 😆 I would suggest a social residence as a lot of them come with a private bathroom but still offer the benefits of cheaper rent and meeting new people! A lot of companies offer flexible contracts too so it’s good if you decide to move into your own place. Personally, I really like the privacy of an apartment but I would still recommend experiencing a share house/social residence environment especially if you’re there for a couple of years. Good luck with your studies! 📚❤️

I would say that if you are on a small budget, sharehouse is the best option. If you have a bit of money and dont know anything about apartment, go with Leopalace21. Since they deal with most of the stuff, the appartment come semi-furnished and you can move in almost the same day.

Have heard some unimpressive stories about places managed by Leopalace21. The most common theme is that Leopalace21's apartments have tiny kitchen and tiny bathroom/toilet.
@Techn207
@Techn207 5 лет назад
@@zam023 Yeah, it's a hit or miss situation. Im about 30 minutes from central Tokyo, so i guess it's slightly better than closer to the town. But as said, when you dont know anything about Japan, have no contacts or anything, your chances of getting an appartment (that is not shitty) are pretty darn slim. But with Leopalace, it's very quickly done and easy. It gives you a place with everything you need to start (minus a bed) and you can rent by the month. It's a good enough starting point in my book. Keyword : starting point!
@zam023
@zam023 5 лет назад
Do they require Key money and how months installment do they need, if there is any? I'm moving to Japan in a couple of weeks. Going to university. For the 1st year I will be staying in the university dorm, which is great (have seen pictures) but in the 2nd year I might need to move off-campus. I would be in Shiga prefecture tho, not anywhere near Tokyo.

There is a company that I’ve stayed with at one point called Oakhouse and they do short term renting and they have social residences, share houses and apartments. It’s a bit more expensive than what a local would pay but my experience with them was generally very good and the locations are usually very convenient. They definitely have social residences with private bathrooms. I think Sakura House also have similar offers but I have never dealt with them myself. It also really depends on your budget- GoldenGain (the one I showed in the video) is by far the cheapest but I’m unsure about how much privacy they offer with their other residences. It might be worth checking out the website just in case! Overall though, Oakhouse had the easiest move in procedure and I liked how I could pay monthly through the website using my UK card so it helped especially when I couldn’t initially transfer money over to my Japanese account. Hope this helps!

I am afraid you had to bare this kind of stress, which might be even difficult to maintain mental health, even fo rJapanese like me. To the frank, 'Share House' had not ben exist in Japan fo r a long time. Share house were recently just made to apply for some request of Chinese Student or workers who need to live within Main Tokyo are with cheap price. (For Chinese student who had to work at restaurant or seven -eleven. Basically Japanese condominiums in central cities were built with 'Minimum' size for small family. especially for Bath rooms etc., It is not expected to allocate space for 13 people from the beginning. I personally consider if European or American people could do with this space, he or she might be a sailor or prisoner before. As I had some stay at USA Texas, i believe 'Personal Distance' is very important to keep a certain cultural style. I am glad to know you could escape from this and change place to better place.

Didn't you use a mattress for the bed?商店街が近いところがいいね。私の所有している家を借りて!月8万円、ファミリータイプだから高いかな。3k、66m2.

I only bought a thin mattress topper. A family type house sounds nice!! ❤️

I think this room is smaller than prison cells in Norway.

This place gives me prison vibes. Tiny space, hard as rock beds, no storage, shared bathroom with smelly water.

HAHAHA 😉 your poor coworkers are subjected to my musings loool! Oh god I cannot forget that day. It’s burned into the back of my mind. I relive the trauma every time I go into a public bathroom 🚽

@@MariannaVlogs and uh... I saw a 💩 on the public restroom toilet once in the 5th grade. Showed my brother some one did that. And we went to show some other kids (because we were in school) and the 💩 had moved from where it was. And we died laughing...
