Coincidentally, I saw and shook hands with Elvis that day (or the day before). My twin sister and I were 4-years-old when my father stopped to get gas on Glendale Rd. in Toledo. My dad got out of the car to talk to the guy in the next lane. That guy came over and stuck his head in our car, shook our hands and told us he was a twin too! That guy was Elvis Presley!

Thanks for this. I have lived in the Commodore for 12 years and the Elvis story is well known here. Al Capone stayed in the building as well. I've heard about the other floors but they have always been blocked off to the public. The large mural in the lobby came from one of those floors about 8 years ago.

Still trying to wrap my head around the reason anyone would just walk up to a performer and want to punch him!? People can be seriously crazy! Glad Elvis knew how to defend himself! No wonder he had Red West accompanying him in the early days as well as the MM after that. A good reason for his being so into karate. 🥰🕺🏻🎶⚡️🥰🥋

If you read Scotty Moore's THAT'S ALRIGHT, ELVIS, Scotty describes the November 1956 fight with the 19-year-old in detail on page 133. Scotty states the railing was "besides steps" and "I jumped on his back...he actually threw me over the railing." Evidently, the fall wasn't very far, and "Elvis was absolutely using him as a punching bag." In 1997 I met Scotty and D.J. Fontana and handed them a newspaper account or Elvis' two shows in Louisville just days before leaving for Toledo. My wife had attended the Sunday matinee at the Louisville Armory sitting a few rows in front of Elvis. At the mention of the word Toledo they both rolled their eyes and started laughing. D.J. told me, "Oh I remember Toledo all right!"
@SpaGuy

That is really cool.. One of the reports said it was a short drop over the railing about 4'.. If we could have gotten inside maybe we could have found the spot.. I wished I had asked Scotty about it..

I worked for the company that owns this now. Monarch is the name of the company. It's now used as an apartment building. There's an entire abandoned floor that's said to be haunted. We've had residents who used to live on that floor who would see there dining room chairs pushed into a circle as if the ghosts were having a meeting. Short after the floor was abandoned. They don't sell or lease anything on that floor.

Yes, back in the '50s (and possibly earlier) the Commodore Perry Hotel was a very exciting and beautiful place to go in Toledo, Ohio. CP had lots of entertainment, great dining, dancing, and shopping. It was very famous back-in-the-day and the entire town (and even neighboring towns) enjoyed CP and people of all ages and ethnicities. My mother shared with me some very exciting experiences she had at CP and including the fight (and show) that Elvis Presley had. Unfortunately, it took a couple of decades before EP returned to Toledo, OH. I think he returned in 1977.
@SpaGuy
@SpaGuy 2 года назад
So you are saying your mother was present when this fight happened?
@LisaRobinson0725
@LisaRobinson0725 2 года назад
@@SpaGuy No, she wasn't, but the news concerning the fight spread like wildfire in Toledo. I guess nowadays one would say that the news went viral. So, my mother (may she rest in peace) shared with me the news from back-in-the-day about the fight when I was a young girl. I've been an EP fan since childhood. And, she would often talk about how much fun she and her boyfriend had at CP. My mother was born in 1929. So she was a bit older than EP but within the same age range... EP was well known (and even in the Negro/Colored community) because his style and sound were so very recognizable...

Oh Billy you are so charming I’m surprised the man didn’t let you up there. Billy there was a commodore perry hotel in Austin Texas. My friends daddy was the manager of it when I was a young teen ager. It had a fifth floor swimming pool and we used to go swim there. Her family lived in the penthouse apartment I think it was. That was probably 60 yrs ago. It was beautiful where she lived. They used to serve us Shirley temples out on the pool side. In glass glasses too. But we had to sit still and drink them. As I’m sure so we wouldn’t break them. But it was a beautiful hotel. I have no idea if the hotel is still in downtown Austin.

That's also why he got into Karate in the service. It was to be able to protect himself. He even said he never knew if a guy was going to shake his hand or take a swing at him, even in the early days. He had so many threats against him his whole career. I believe they were really serious and that's why he started carrying guns on him. What an awful way to have to live for such a gentle kind soul!
