I have come to the conclusion that Tom Brier is a modern-day ragtime genius. His pieces have real depth, sensitivity and beauty, as well as amazing variety. We bought his portfolios, and my wife (a classically trained pianist) loves to play his work. Thanks Keeper for all the great vids!
Every single time I watch and listen to this I just want to jump in the screen and say,” Thank you, Tom”. He truly made and played his playful soul out. I wish I knew him.
Yeah, the idea that Tom only plays loud & fast is entirely erroneous. He's just particularly good at it, thus he's built that reputation. His new album "Blue Sahara", of all Brier compositions, has a few slow numbers like this on it.
I get chills from this piece every time. It reminds me that a beautiful melody doesn't require large chords and complex rhythms. Also, the sequences in his melodies are always perfect.
I think this is probably my favorite of Tom's pieces. I've liked it for a long time, but this video is a particular gem. The murmurs in the background is so pleasing.
I have been following this channel and Tom briar for years and yesterday I went to the oc ragtime Meetup and saw Vincent Johnson and Andrew Barrett perform only to come home and realize they had been playing or in the background of multiple of Ron's videos. I'm terrible with faces...
It's nice to hear Briar play like this on you tube. I agree he's somewhat poorly represented here. I'd much rather hear him play one of his beautiful compositions like this than sight read video game music or play maple leaf in a bunch of keys. I've seen him perform in person only several times but he always mixed introspective compositions with showstoppers.
Some of us only know ragtime from the openings and endings of our kids' video games. I think That is worth hearing as well, & it kept his sight-reading skills sharp.

I started getting into ragtime because I'm a big fan of legend of Zelda and also I had heard Maple leaf rag and I started looking at these people had made Zelda songs into rags which is how I found your channel this was about 5 or so years ago. Ever since then I wanted to visit the Sutter Creek festival but was just out of school and couldn't really afford it. This year I was looking into going and saw it was canceled. It only then occurred toe that there was probably a local festival I could attend. So I looked it up last Friday and sure enough the Orange county ragtime group was meeting the next day. I went and met Vincent and also Andrew. I came home and watched a couple videos of Tom only to realize Vincent had been besides him all long, and that not only had I seen Andrew play in some of the videos you posted, I had even commented on them! I feel like I just stumbled into a small world that had been under my nose for ages! Anyway, thank you for all you do! Keeping up the channel and posting us on Tom. When I first found your channel I was in a tough place with my job and listening to the music on it helped a lot.

While the Mother Lode Ragtime Society is no longer holding a festival in Sutter Creek (plans are to hold one in Woodland next year), Stevens Price is planning on hosting a festival in Sutter Creek this year with many of the same performers.
