The keep does not last 8 weeks. It starts at 8 weeks when they are weaned. Everything matters. These athletes are not made in 8 weeks they are created 63 days prior to birth in a process called selection. The last 8 weeks are nothing more than fine tuning all of the above. I am not knocking the other videos, but this one truly stands out. Knocked it out of the park. There was some emphasis on completing a 'keep' written by another. If there is another similar video this should be a key point. Your dog is not my dog, and your mill is not my mill, and your outside ambient temperature is not the same as mine. Your dog will tell you everything you need to know every day. If you listen, you will have a great opportunity to succeed. If you choose to listen to "Joe from down the road" vs. listening to your dog, you will hurt your own feelings at a later time. When that happens don't blame anyone but yourself. Great video.

If we’re going back in time about 3 decades or more, I’d say the keep starts after it’s determined the athlete was show quality which would be after schooling.

This was GOLDEN!!! It let's me know that I'm on the right track. I believe in and agree with 100% of what was mentioned, because this is exactly how I condition...from 2 on 1 off, baseline exercises in the prekeep like walking to observe your teammate, to resting your teammate during the peak week. This was definitely on point!

Ok so what you call power we call explosiveness and twitch in boxing!
@lucasempire80
@lucasempire80 6 месяцев назад
That’s what we call explosiveness in weightlifting. Power is the rate/speed at which you are able to move/force maximal weight in less or mininmal time.
@davebarry4647
@davebarry4647 6 месяцев назад
@@lucasempire80 Weightlifting is a perfect example of power and using the first energy system=ATP in competition. Powerlifting is a perfect example of strength (much slower in speed than weightlifting), but still uses ATP as the prime energy source for the activity in meets.
@davebarry4647
@davebarry4647 6 месяцев назад
Brad misstated the energy systems he listed. There are no energy systems called strength, endurance, or power (5:20). Depending on the source used, you may find slightly different numbers or a different name. Still, canines' energy systems are very similar to humans. Energy Sytems: 1. The immediate/phosphagen system generally lasts 5-20 sec (these numbers vary slightly). It comes from burning adenosine triphosphate (ATP). For example, weight-pulling would use this energy system. If the event continues for more than 20+ seconds, 2. The glycolytic system kicks in, lasts 20-120 sec, and is anaerobic (does not use oxygen). 3 Aerobic-Oxidative system, which converts to aerobic system at approximately 2+min. Depending on the activity, the dog will cycle through these energy systems. For example, running the slate mill would use all 3 systems when working on endurance (endurance/power is a different specialty). This subject is very nuanced, so if you have any specific questions, I'm glad to help, or I'm sure Brad can as well.

Alot of key points made here but can't forget to add that nutrition is also a key factor to conditioning your dog has to be of good health before being put into conditioning

Great episode.... I wouldn't worry about reaching everyone. Many of the people watching this have a deadly combination of low comprehension, arrogance, and lack of effort in the care of their animals. You just can't hope to reprogram their ways through RU-vid. The person who thinks deeply and critically will be able to take something of value from these videos, and for others, it will flow over their scalps like water smoothing their brains further much like a river stone. Please keep them coming and absolutely re-address on the topics discussed as needed. Thank you, guys, for taking the time to share with the public your lengthy experience with these dogs.

You have some dog that's naturally strong like the Eli dog but have less endurance so I tend to work on more of endurance then strength@@ConfusedFieldHockey-em6bt

@davebarry4647 6 месяцев назад
@@ConfusedFieldHockey-em6bt@ConfusedFieldHockey-em6bt It depends on which one is more important for the particular dog you are working with. If your dog lacks strength, you want to work on the strength aspect first while the dog has the highest energy (this assumes you may be working both in one training session) and is likely to take the most prolonged period of the keep, in my example. Why? Strength training generally takes longer to develop than endurance.

If I were to venture a guess as to why so many people spend a lot of time focused on endurance, such as running their dogs on the slate mill, it would be because some old-school conditioners were more interested in gameness/endurance (newbies see more old keeps posted than new) than those looking for a quick win by using strength as the primary focus (Louis Colby called them the 'Pepsi' generation). I've seen one particular conditioner that used nothing but the slate mill and boasted wins over some of the all-time greats. Personally, I look at my dog and diagnose his strengths and weaknesses. Then, I look at the events I plan on competing in, such as the wall climb or wall jumping, and ask myself what mark typically wins these events. Then, I'd predict how well my dog could compete against the best in his current condition. Finally, I'd decide whether to strengthen my dog's strengths even more or evenly distribute his abilities. Then, I'd set up the plan, but I am always willing to change things on the fly and usually focus on recovery more than any other attribute when I do make changes outside my original plan.

@mikelee4009 I have some Santos blood have for close to 10 yrs, I just don't feel like it's much to talk about other than it's a spike Frisco gene pool that's been kept tight on the hill still using semen of santos himself. Its not like the dynomite or El negro family where he's had 3 generations of champions there. It's good blood but it's not like he's added it to everything there and seen gains or draw backs. I take it you have a santos pup or want 1. Good stock to make a cross with.

Chain pulling for 10 sessions over 3 weeks waiting to add a significant amount of weight until sessions 7, 8, 9 and 10. Distance always stays the same. Feed heavy. Joint or ligament damage is most likely to occur during this time, and it takes 6 - 8 months to fully recover from that.

Both of these things are just indicators of aerobic fitness, not things that you train. I guess I don't understand the question. Do you want us to talk about how to measure these things? We measure hematocrit or pcv (packed cell volume) with a blood sample spun in a centrifuge. It should be between 35 - 55. Below 35 means they are anemic.......something is wrong. While in the 40's is fine, we are really looking to be between 48-52 if we have done our job conditioning and they are healthy. There are a lot of conditions that could cause anemia, but in Bulldogs babesia is a major culprit. While hardly ever seen in other breeds, so vets will charge you through the nose ($1500) on a dozen other tests before sending off a $50 babesia test. I'm not hating on vets, because it makes sense statistically from their experience and what happens most often is most likely what is happening, but in Bulldogs specifically (and there is research on this from bloodwork done on confiscated dogs) just have them send off for the babesia test first.

@davebarry4647 6 месяцев назад
@@jimsmiley9946 Jim stated, "Both of these things are just indicators of aerobic fitness, not things that you train. I guess I don't understand the question." 1a. "Both of these things (they are called measurements) are just indicators of aerobic fitness..." False, the lactate threshold (LT) is often mistakingly referred to as the aerobic threshold; However, this is imprecise because it's TYPICALLY considered the same as the anaerobic threshold=ventilatory threshold=functional threshold. Regardless, while the LT potentially correlates with aerobic fitness, it's not considered a measurement of it.1b. Yes, Vo2max is a direct measurement of aerobic fitness. 2. "...not things that you train." False; Vo2max and LT can be measured and specifically trained to improve. Based on your response, you have never measured either, so you certainly won't knowingly train to improve something you don't know how to measure. 3. You can delete the last paragraph since neither LT nor Vo2max is measured using the hematocrit, but instead, you are trying to show a positive association between a hematocrit of 48-52% and the level of conditioning w/o an explanation.
