To me this is about how most of these artists have to keep the appearance of their hip-hop character at all times when all they want to be themselves but can't. The happy visuals and up tempo music is how the fans expect you to be and the darker lyrics are how you actually feel.

A lot of kids love this song and Buttholes. For me the song reminds me of people like Robin Williams who put on a happy front while their life was falling apart. It's a reminder that no one really knows what anyone else is going through and we should just be nice to everyone we meet. You never know who is at that tipping point where a kind word means they stay around or an angry word means they check out. Love how you guys broke this down.

Can't be nice to everyone, you can be civil but nice isn't always possible especially when it very easy for people to not click . Obviously everyone being nice is a good dream, but can't think of anyone who doesn't have beef or at least not get on with at least 1 person. Think that will be always the case for aslong as people are different, also this whole fake woke culture definitely feed on toxicity and anger that bread the same back towards them even between family members. I believe the heavy auto tune, flashy outfits, and lyrics, calling back home etc. are all reflective of the struggle of the music industry. The phone booth seems to depict the feeling of isolation. Just my interpretation. Great video! Love you guys.

As a parent I love that the song shows them calling their parents. I hope no mattter what my own children may face in life, no matter how bad it gets, or what mistakes they may make. They will know they can reach out to me. Thanks for the reaction.

This song IS a depressed person. If you see the surface and their smiling face (or the just hear the upbeat music) you have the impression that everything is fine. But if you talk to the person, get below the surface, listen to the lyrics, then you see the "bad news" that people are going through. This song was a perfect embodiment of depression and how it is perceived, how it is overlooked, how it isn't noticed through the smiles or upbeat tunes. They are masters!!

So this track has 7 messages: 1) if the label wants you to sound a certain way, you can still deliver a message - Nova 2) If you feel like the label is controlling you and your artistic ability, there is a way you can get out - Nova 3) If you are being surrounded by thugs, you can get away from those people - Madchild 4) If there's nothing of value surrounding you, and just entertainment, you can leave that all behind you - Madchild 5) who said you ever have to sign? You can do this yourself - Tom 6) The reason you are sad is because you are not doing what you want. [This is a message not only to rappers, but to the fanbase as well] The question then becomes, why? As the album is called 'Killing the Neighbors'. Who are the neighbors? Other subgenres of hip-hop/rap. As in don't discount because the lane is different, they (Madchild, Tom, Nova) can do what these other artists can do. This an exhibition to say, a hockey player knows how to play golf.

Madchild is an OG.. He is creator and founder of "BAXWAR" (Battleaxe warriors) and he has the battle axe tattoo on his cheek now. He was part of a group called "Swollen Members" but I think theyve had a falling out over his habits. Thats who he was talking about in the sober song. The BAXWAR logo is akin to a 1% motorcycle batch in top and bottom rockers as sort of an F you to the Hells Angels who he used to associate with. He was banned from the USA due to his links and thats the "Mad goons" he refers to in this track. He literally has had it all and lost it a couple times. I had the pleasure of meeting him after a show once when he came to Australia. He has quite a few songs solo and then even more with swollen members. Glad you found this OG and hope you check out some of his music too. 💜🇦🇺

To me this song is about dealing with the realities of keeping up a tough front against society, like you can't let anyone see you struggling. Then reaching out to the one person you trust in a vulnerable moment to help you stay from the edge. This song makes me tear up a lil every time, it just brings up old wounds and a strong sense of feeling vulnerability. I'm glad they did such a unique song, upbeat sound but a real message mixed in. It is meant to provoke thought imo.

Remember they all came up out of the gutter. They faced their truth and found their way out the other side. The up lifting beat to me resembles the turning point of their lives. As someone recovering I don't see my past as an anchor anymore so everyday when reflecting on the past is better now today in the present. So yes celebrate their new lives and all those who have turned their own page.

Best part is 9:24-5 when they say they have been rolling with bad dudes and both point to mad child. I think the happy beat and darker lyrics is really representative of how depression and life works. Usually those of us suffering the most tend to put on a mask or happy face. You see sometimes after someone commits' suicide "but they seemed so happy just yesterday". They may be having success and good things in life but doesn't mean they aren't battling their inner selves or demons of the past etc. I hated this song when I first heard it but its grown to be one of my favorite go to songs.

The Emo bands did often songs like this: fun/upbeat songs with an upbeat message. I've heard people say, that this gives them the opportunity to think about a serious topic, without getting effected emotionally too bad. But maybe in this case it was the idea, to show, that behind all this fun mainstream music might be sad artists with real problems in life. If you want to check out the concept of the Emo bands (as a reaction or in private): Falling in Reverse "covered" two of their own songs from 2011/12(?) with the same lyrics, but completely different music. "The Drug In Me Is You/The Drug In Me Is Reimagined" and more recently "I'm Not A Vampire/I'm Not A Vampire Revamped". It's really interesting!

I think that the happy sound coupled to the hard message, is a play on how some people going through depression or difficult times can appear all good on the outside v's how they truly feel on the inside... the more I think on it the deeper it gets, but I guess that's the point lol. I am a 60yo man, I’ve always considered rap to nails scratching on a blackboard, we’ll, unless of course you consider the Sugarhill Gang 😉, but I digress, anyway, someone asked me to listen to Tom Macdonald’s Fake Woke, and I found that if you pay attention to the lyrics, and not just the “music” there is truly a message to be heard, thank you for helping to broaden my horizon into the world of music. BTW, you two are just wonderful to watch and listen to.

I love the song. I listen to a lot of pop music and many pop songs have meaningful lyrics if you pair it back and focus on the message in the song, I know a few who write songs acoustically first so it sounds good both ways. I’m used to having fun to meaningful songs. That makes me love them even more personally. Gimme a song that I can jam to and cry to. I love that feeling lol

Maybe I'm just reading too much into the song, but I feel like the poppy music is indicative of the happy face depressed people put on in public, while the lyrics are indicative of the thoughts that we hear inside our heads when depression first starts creeping in. The song just wouldn't be the same to me if it had a sound that matched the lyrics.

It is a satyr. A representation of life on the road in the industry. Its supposed to sound like a happy and uplifting call to the parents from the road, but mixed with the real downfalls and hazards of "gettin wrapped up in the game" as they all did in their younger days. a representation of how all the calls home to the parents from artists really would sound if all these these mainstreem fools told their parents the truth about what goes on on tour and whatnot. The calls from the road are usualy lies like, happy "everythings great out here, im out living my best life, mom!" calls. This is what it would really sound like if they told their parents the truth back then!!! They all did it. Lived it. Woke up one day and have now found a whole different way of life. And have switched gears over the last few years to create some amazing art. Its beyond songs. Its poetry, activism, real thoughts, ideas of acceptance and accepting our differences wich has basicaly become a crime these days. instead of "your wrong because that would make me not right" I wish we could just sit down and play the entire H.O.G. catalog to the whole dang world right now for real!!! Happyness and love from and for all of us. Regardless of differences. And put down the fast cars, women, drugs, alcohol we all know the list of bad stuff. But we promote it in the industry to our kids and adults in different forms everday! We all gotta wake up.

it is an exaggerated illustration of rappers and the created persona that they (have to) show to the outside world. Therefore, they call their mother and father in a lost area, symbolizing how they feel inside and in the hope that their parents can reassure them because they are the only one who know who they really are.

If you notice in the song, how much vocal overprocessing, especially with Nova, they use, it's a very nice touch showing the fakeness of the music persona the audience sees. Most musicians show a persona to to public that is successful and attractive, but if you listen to the lyrics of the song, you get the meaning of true person behind the persona. This is a song about all those people who listen and dance to catchy beats without listening to lyrics.

He's still invested in the "Rap Look/Culture", but starting to sing about his LIFE and observations, not about what most rappers sing about. Not thrilled with the use of auto-tune, but it's still a "powerful" song, showing Tom's struggle and vulnerability.

The auto tune was done on purpose to make a point...that even if use auto tune, like many rappers / singers do, u can still make a meaningful song instead of a lot of the garbage out there. This is the only song that they did with all auto tune.

I think the message is that they are all struggling with their current situations, hanging out with bad people, doing things they dont wanna do, always have to be flexing and fake, hence the autotune. All of them are calling home to mom which means they are in need of a familiar voice and someone who knows and loves them. Thats what i thought.

the drugs make you crazy and manipulative, and they are singing about the craziness of it all. You walk a fine line between life and death when you are using any kind of drugs. You do not care about other people. In retrospect, they see what they have done and are laughing at themselves for how stupid they were. What a fun song!

I liked it but the music is upbeat but the lyrics bring you down to earth. It's like when you get away with something and then later confess to your parents later. Just my thoughts.
