While I dig Tom Petty's music in general, the old Heartbreaker's stuff from the '70s and early '80s are absolutely the best. Those albums are what define Tom Petty for me.
@@cynthiasanchez6346 I wish I still had my old record collection, and my cassettes and CDs. I was a bit, uh, wild back in the day, and everything tended to get broken, worn out, or "mysteriously disappear." I really regret not taking better care of my music. Especially now that they are starting to apply pitch correction to the vocals of old performances. I recently saw a video of the Eagles back in the day performing Take It To The Limit, and they had pitch corrected Randy Meisner's vocals, if you can believe that. It's only a matter of time before they do the same to new releases of classic albums (and probably other digital tricks as well, like altering the time, etc). If they haven't already done it. The only way you know you have the real thing is to have older releases.
@@jackgilchrist My gosh! I did not know that. I don’t want any of that great music tampered with. Don’t feel too bad, I had a pretty good collection of vinyl in my teens and my younger brother (after I told him no way!) took it to a party and it was all stolen. Had to start all over again! Three of my brothers were rock and rollers and had bands of their own off and on. Yes lots of partying and wild times back in the day! Ha! I grew up in the Bay Area so was exposed to so many great musicians at that time, starting in the 60’s. We do have a great collection thank goodness tho of course missing so much we wish we bought. Pitch correct Randy Meisner? Geesh! My daughter when she was little used to sing along to my 8 track (ha!) of the Eagles and at the top of her lungs sung “take it to the lemon!” 😂 I never corrected her, it was too cute. Now we laugh about singing those good old songs together. They need to leave real music alone! On a side note, RIP S.R.V. G.O.A.T. 🎸🎤
@@cynthiasanchez6346 Take it to the lemon... love it. 😂 Someone needs to start digitally archiving original and older releases of music, before the physical media wears out and modern producers ruin everything. Pitch correcting someone like Randy is musical sacrilege. Or anyone, really. It takes the emotion and humanity out of a person's voice. Nobody sings in perfect 440 pitch, except maybe robots. It's the "imperfections" that give a voice soul. When I lost a collection back then, good old Columbia House or BMG would get me started again with 12 (give or take) records, tapes or CDs for a penny. Remember those? Sure, you were then supposed to buy several more at regular price within 3 years or something, but most people didn't, and after that time period was up you could do it all over again. 😉
The whole album "Damn The Torpedoes" is absolutely solid and belongs in every music lover's collection. "Refugee" is a great rock song and stands the test of time, but it isn't the only one. Tom Petty's unique vocals are unmistakably killer.
Early Petty is Gold, baby. BREAK DOWN is another amazing song out of hundreds. He was also with the super group, The Traveling Wilburys with Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Jeff Lynn, (I apologize to the drummer who I keep forgetting his name). You have to be a legend to breath the same air as those folks. RIP Tom, George and Roy!
One of his best songs. Love the lyrics to this one, of course! He is/was a good one ~ without a doubt. His music is so recognizable with that voice & his sound. RIP to you, Tom.
Tom Petty’s voice is instantly recognizable. His songs were always way better than they charted for some reason. Love to put his greatest hits on and let the music blast. Tom Petty IS unique and his music was always different in the very best way possible. There is a reason he was asked to join The Traveling Wilbury’s with all the other greats in that group. George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty in one group. Wow.
"...somebody must have kicked you around some; who knows, maybe you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away, and held for ransom..." Some of my favorite rock lyrics ever. Yeah, I've known several people like that. Kickass music, but, most of his stuff is kickass. Great reaction!
@pangaea90 The Postman. My brother and his wife were extras in the scenes filmed here in Washington and Oregon. Tom was really cool and friendly, Costner not so much.
And then there is the greatest collaboration ever. "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks sing it together. Petty wrote it for her.
Years ago the family was on a 500 mile road trip, the kids were aged 12-16, and my son put on a Tom Petty Greatest hit album. My wife had no idea who Tom Petty was, but all four kids and I sang along to all the songs. It was a great duo-generation bonding experience. Go AHEAD AND REACT TO ALL OF THEM!
One of the best guitarists of all time, Mike Campbel. Tom Petty...one of the most prolific songwriters. Bentmont Tench, incredible pianists, the rest of the band incredible. Miss Tom
Tom grew up in Gainesville Fla, where the Univ of Fla is located. Since his death, at every football game, during a timeout the whole stadium stands up and sings "I won't back down". It is EPIC.
I absolutely love Tom Petty I can't believe you haven't heard him, later on he was with the traveling wilburys,I was born in 61 so it was a great time growing up with all that amazing music I was truly blessed 🤩 🙏
the whole album this is from, DAMN THE TORPEDOES, was my introduction to tp & the heartbreakers all the way back in 1979 and it is a BANGER. one of the best albums ever in the rock 'n roll era. other songs from this you need to check out: don't do me like that here comes my girl even the losers louisiana rain you tell me and also: though recorded during these sessions but didn't make it to the album - "casa dega" - my most favourite ❤ these don't even include all the other GREAT songs from tom and the boys but it's a great start! p.s. tom has the BEST scream/howl in the business ❤ p.s.s. the lyrics were heavily inspired by the legal problems tom was going through during these recording sessions. mca records was suing tom for posession of the master recordings of DAMN. tom was literally moving/hiding/doing whatever was needed to keep them in his posession. so the lyrics "somewhere, somehow, somebody must've kicked you around some...who knows maybe you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away, and held for ransom...everybody's had to fight to be free, you see you don't have to live like a refugee..."are where that comes from. tom eventually settled with mca and DAMN was released on the compromise label - backstreet records.
It's always time to listen to Petty. One of my biggest heroes as a musician and a person of great integrity. Watch a live performance and you will see how much his fans truly love him, and will love him forever
My favorite is “Here Comes my Girl”. Back in the day, a guy I liked dedicated that song to me. On my private playlist, love it to this day. The best part? “Watch her walk”. Still gives me a big smile. 🇺🇸
Here's my Tom Petty story: Back in 1985 my sister was working for a lady who was a hippie and seemed to know everyone. We had tickets for the Southern Accents tour and the lady was also invited. During the show the lady asked my sister if she wanted to go backstage and meet Tom Petty (her friend was the stage manager). My sister said "No" because she thought it would be only her. Never let her forget it to this day! 😂😂😢
You felt what I felt as a 16yo in '81 & that was the ANGST in Toms voice from this track- on the radio...& the killer Mike riff of course...the LOT! Rushed out & bought the cassette & have been a TPATH fan ever since! Love the man for who he was!..& of course his music was top shelf also! ✌️❤️🎩 🇦🇺🦘
Tom Petty made a 40 year career out of an ancient technique and style that was once called Rock N Roll. The only other band I can think of that did this was The Rolling Stones. While most bands will rely on changing it up for current trends if they want to survive, Tom Petty did it with excellent song writing. He wrote everything from The Heartbreakers to his solo stuff, and was revered until his untimely death in 2017. It was 1979 when I first heard of Tom Petty at the age of 12 with the release of Damn The Torpedoes. I was just starting out my record collection with my weekly allowance, and this one had to be included.
"Running Down A Dream", "You Wreck Me", and "Saving Grace" are all great rockers, "Mary Jane's Last Dance" is some badass blues rock, "Breakdown" is uniquely intense. "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Here Comes My Girl" are good pop rock, and "Don't Come Around Here No More" is cool and trippy. Catch the video on that one, Tom is the Mad Hatter in Wonderland. I was around for his entire career, and trust me, you will love having him in your rotation.
Everything in life is timing... growing up my family moved alot. One of the areas I wound up in was Jax, Fl. in the early 70's. I had a front row seat to the explosion of talent that came out of that period. The first time I ever saw Petty it was in a off campus dive bar in Gainesville, Fl. They were called Mudcrutch back then and my first impression of Tom was that he was trying really hard to sound like Dylan!!
It's ALWAYS time for some TP! Such an amazing songwriter, just an awesome catalog! No frills, just enough every time, perfect arrangements, great storytelling, and groove for days!! The absolute essence of ROCK AND ROLL. RIP
Tom Petty 70’s catalog & early 80’s we’re his defining achievements ! Here’s a list of some of his best in my opinion… 1) Breakdown (1976) ❤️ 2) I Need To Know (1978) 3) American Girl (1976) 4) Don’t Do Me Like That (1979) ❤️ 5) Even The Losers (1979) 6) You Got Lucky (1982) 7) The Waiting (1981) 8) Here Comes My Girl (1979) 9) Listen To Her Heart (1978) 10) Something In The Air (1993) 11) Mary Jane’s Last Dance (1993)
For me, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are it. It is just amazing how good they are. Mike Campbell is one of the best guitarists around, rivaling Eric Clapton and Prince. Unfortunately, he's a well-kept secret for some reason. Tom has such a distinctive voice and he just oozes rock n roll. All of Tom's music is, of course, original. His music has meaning, a story to tell, is relatable and is just f*****g great. I could go on and on about them. I've been to every concert except his last one. My kids grew up on Petty. We started taking them to concerts at around 12. Suffice it to say that each member of this family (4 of us) know every word to about 99% of his songs.. You got me. I subscribed because of your interest in Tom. I can't wait to take this journey with you. I can't wait to see your reactions. LET'S ROCK!!!!!
SOOOOO GLAD to see you reacting to this Tom Petty song!!! In my opinion its the best one to start with if your just getting to know Tom. Not only my favorite Petty song but also one of my all time favorite rock songs as well. It really kicks butt!! Some other great bangers to check out, "A Woman in Love" "You Wreck Me" "Higher Place" "Honey Bee" and his live version of "Breakdown" is epic!
Tom is a Southern rocker. He came up around the same time in the 70s when Southern Rock was hot. Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Widespread Panic, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers, .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, The Marshall Tucker Band, etc. So, so much awesome music from that time period that just get ignored for some reason.
Interestingly... Tom's first band, Mudcrutch (which also featured Campbell and Tench), used to be a headliner band in Gainesville, and Lynard Skynyrd opened for them Still, though the Heartbreakers had roots in Gainesville, Tom considered the band to be "a California band". His words, not mine.
There was a reason George Harrison asked Tom Petty to join his little supergroup along with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne to name a few...geniuses, every last one!
Arguably the greatest American band. (Certainly in the running.) Straight-up rock music doesn't really get any better than this. Distinctive vocals, great co-songwriting with bandmate/guitarist Mike Campbell, great keyboard player, plus the whole band is accomplished and tight. One of his earliest songs--the slinky, spare "BREAKDOWN"--still curls my toes nails after all these years, lol. Being we're familiar with your taste now, Salvo, I would safely say there are dozens--truly, DOZENS--of great songs of his you would enjoy .
This is the quintessential Tom Petty song, and the first one that turned my head when it came out (seems like only yesterday, but I was just a kid back then)
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are fire. Their first 4 albums still get blasted in my household. The Heartbreakers (led by guitar virtuoso, Mike Campbell) are one of the finest bands all time. PLEASE - do "American Girl" I have only seen them twice (sadly) the first time was the "Hard Promises Tour" Ottawa (Split Endz opened) and then the "Mojo Tour" Toronto (Crosby, Stills & Nash opened).
I saw him right after this album was released but hadnt hit big yet. It was a 3,000 seat venue in Cincinnati, Ohio. A few months later he was playing much bigger shows. Got to see him 2 other times, but the freshness of that show I always remember. He was actually playing requests at the end!😅❤
With this hit single, TP were now also known in Europe. His live album Pack Up The Plantation: Live! 1985 with the long version of Breakdown (his first single in 1976), Rebels, Southern Accent and the cover Shout are just a few highlights, certainly one of the best live rock albums of the 80s. The next rock radio hits were The Waiting, You Got Lucky, Don't Come Here No More, ... .
IMO there are 5 songs to get into Tom Petty's frame of mind: You Got Lucky Babe, Runnin Down a Dream, Breakdown, American Girl & Here Comes My Girl. Can't go wrong with any of these.
TPATH - one of those groups with 40+ years of music, continuously evolving their style. I feel like we grew up together.! Check out "Fault Lines" from their last album, Hypnotic Eye. The other band with that kind of longevity and influence in my life is Rush.
Tom Petty always struck me as looking and sounding like the "guy next door", a version of the typical man you'd meet at the gas station or grocery store. He DOES have a great kinda screech at times. Don't get me wrong, I like his singing. But the nasal quality of it makes it unique and typical at the same time. Glad you tried this song out. He does have quite an attitude in many of his songs, and I love it. Try "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "You Got Lucky"...very iconic songs.
The Damn the Torpedos album is great, so many really great songs. Even the Losers, Don't do Me Like That, Here Comes My Girl... really great stuff. You really should do the whole album.
CHECK OUT TOM PETTY AND EDDIE VEDDER SINGING "THE WAITING" ON STAGE, ITS INCREDIBLE!!! SUCH AWESOME BEAT AND GROOVE AWESOME RIFF AND MELODY!! AWESOME REACTION!! 😊🩷🤘✌️🔥🔥🔥
Vedder and Petty were a great duo. And what's great about both of them, is that they weren't afraid to cover songs by other artists. When touring solo, Vedder incorporates a lot of cover songs into his set list, from the Beatles, to the Clash, to Tom Petty. And a real treat is the recordings of Tom & the Heartbreakers at the Filmore in 1997. 20 nights of the boys playing what they wanted to play... Their own songs, plus a ton of covers. They were just a bunch of friends having a blast with music.
It was the first song I listened to on my new stereo in 1979! Dual 606 turntable, Hafler dh101 preamp, dh200 power amp and ADS L620 speakers. I'm not so sure that they make them like that anymore, at least not for less than a grand!
Appreciate everyone’s heartfelt Petty comments. I was a U of Florida undergraduate from 1980-1984. Petty had obviously already moved beyond “Hogtown” by that time, but he was the chosen one for north central FL. So, I enjoyed his music in those early 80’s. But, his music (even those same songs from the late 70s) became so much more impactful as I grew older. Only then, did I/we learn the depth of the lyrics. Fast forward to April 2017. Had seen Tom in the past, but decades removed from my Gainesville grounding, I knew I needed to re-connect with his live show. In that Champaign, IL arena it was magical. Joe Walsh with an amazing band and vocalists opened the show. Would have been enough for me UNTIL TOM HIT THE STAGE. The low key, yet royal feeling of seeing my musical heroes (Tom, Mike, Benmont, etc.) grooving was almost too much. The vibe of the show to “drop the phonograph needle onto a vinyl record and hear the tune” was so beautiful. Tom would stroll to the microphone and warble “well, in a basement in “name the locale” we came up with a riff” and then this majestic band launched into Mary Jane’s Last Stand or American Girl. At that moment, standing in a random basketball arena seat, having lived through these songs through college and young adulthood and young corporate accommodation. I felt the need and the primal desire to yell free and clear. In 1980, I was in a backwoods apartment along 441 in Gainesville Florida only 6-8 years after the Heartbreakers immortalized these swampy locales. But I’ve said it all already. I felt the visceral youthful moments and the nostalgic mournful moments. What that tells me is that it takes a great COMPOSER to bridge generations, decades, and millennium. God bless you Mr. Petty. You thrilled my evoking would for 40 years. Almost nobody can do that. Thanks for your gift!!!
“Damn The Torpedoes” is one of my all time favorite albums. This band simply has everything needed for greatness. An amazing gift for songwriting, a unique vocalist who plays a wonderful rhythm guitar , one of the all time greatest blues/rock guitarists, a keyboard wizard, the likes of which everyone wants in their band, and a solid drummer that just “fits”. Everything they touched was turning to gold, and quite deservedly so. You should listen to some “Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs”. Mike is really carrying on that “Heartbreakers” sound.✌🏼😎🇺🇸
