Petty’s first for Warner Brothers. But Petty had always intended for it to be a double record. Those unreleased songs have been the holy grail for Petty fans for years. And now they’re finally being released, thanks to the careful work of Tom’s daughter, Adria Petty. In this special episode of Broken Record, Rick Rubin talks to Adria about her memories of her dad and the hard curatorial work of putting together the new box set “Wildflowers & All The Rest.”

There is no question anymore because Tom let there be any secrets that he all his life had issues with chemical abuse due to horrible child abuse. And that Adria like Eve in All About Eve studied him all her life. Jacob Dylan could not work with Rick Rubin and Tom's beloved Dana walked away and all kinds of idiots are taking credit for this man's genius. I would swear in several languages but these people do not deserve it.

It's very comforting to hear these two people get on the same intelligent frequency when it comes to quality in modern popular songwriting, something almost all people here in Europe are very far from. A bigger contrast between the U.S. and the European continent than in language is difficult to find.

@briandaniels2126

Having been a singer/songwriter for years who has recorded and mixed myself most of those years I can tell you that not only myself but a lot of producers,recording engineers,musician and mastering engineers all listen to our final mixes or what we hope will be our final mixes on the car stereo.The reasoning is simple.....most people or a lot of them listen to music in the car first or more than anywhere else,most of us grew up doing that(whether musician or fan),music sounds really good in the car.The thing you learn later is that if a song is going to be on radio(or was going to be)...it gets mixed for broadcast which is something different.Anyway,Tom was just doing something that all of us who test our mixes do....which is take them to the car first and if it sounds good or great then usually we know we have the right mix or are at least on the right track.It's not like Tom had some kind of epiphone,it's that testing your mixes/mixing for the car stereo is a regular time tested practice that was going on for years before Tom and still to this day.Knowing that my heroes like Tom and many others were also doing this is one reason I always figured I could never go wrong in getting good mixes if I followed suit.The thing that is most genius especially when you are unknown and in a time like now when most things have been done at least twice is getting the promotion right so people want to take the time to hear you and will take a chance on you.

Thank You... for allowing us to hear this... I look forward to hearing... the “ rest”... To the Petty Family: There are few artists that I can think of ... whose passings have caught me so totally off guard... and unprepared for hearing that news... of them leaving this life... Tom Petty was someone who I thought would be around... making music... for as long as I assumed I would be there ready for more music ... from him. I never thought of him ... NOT... being here. I got to see him several times... playing live... and I still think that it was one of the tightest bands... I ever saw play... and they always seemed like they loved .. what they were doing... while making it look so effortless...! I specifically remember the first time I saw him live... he did this incredible version of “ Hang On Sloopy”... just absolutely fantastic! Thanks for taking care of Wildflowers... and giving all of us this treasure of a gift from your father’s... work... I am so glad that you have decided to share it with us... Thank You so very much... I will always miss Tom Petty.. but you can never remove him from my consciousness... the songs are part of my time on this journey.. in life.. thanks to Tom Petty ... and now, his family... for sharing his gift with me and all his music has touched. Bless You... and Peace...

I went ahead and listened to the entire podcast with the music included and this is total magic. The best podcast I have ever heard about a music artist. Rick Rubin is such a real, down-to-earth guy it is no mystery why he and Tom clicked. Also I would like to give Adria a virtual hug and say thank you. Thank you for protecting your Dad’s legacy and for sharing these very intimate recordings which are worth their weight in gold. Pure gold. She has an insight into her Dad’s mind and heart that is very sweet and some of this conversation and the songs made me cry, just being honest. What a gift we have been given in this music and it reminds us of how much we still miss Tom and grieve his passing. The world is a better place because of the music he gave us. And lest we forget Adria lost her Dad which is much more important than anything else. God bless everyone involved in this project and their families!

It's like reading about the Royals. Get real. Tom was so far advanced with the technology he needed, Rick Rubin was unnecessary. It's like reading that Annie Lennox's writing partner who did in fact produce the music video of Don't Come Around Here No More actually wrote the song .. Dave Stewart claims that. He conveniently forgets all that cocaine he introduced into the band which totally fucked up both Tom's hand which he tried to put through a brick wall and the Southern Accents album which was messed up and sorted out in Highway Companion. Wake up people. I am trying so hard to be civil. but Tom Petty was betrayed.

Funny - hearing about Jeff Lynne vs. Rick, the Into The Great Wide Open album and Wildflowers are my two all-time favorites from him. They both are classic and both have their merits - I love the sheen and wall of 12-string bliss that Jeff gets out of the band and the soaring melodies while I love the personal, gritty and haunting acoustics on Wildflowers. It's ALL Tom, and so cool to hear both.

my 27 year old daughter is involved in my work which has a strong public persona to it..i wonder how she will interpret me and my work when im gone. I also have been a songwriter and theres so much to relate to here. I love my daughter for who she became both because and despite of me.
