This is one of the greatest portrayals of a mental breakdown I've ever seen. I love how meandering and psychologically lost Tom obviously is. He doesn't know what he's feeling, or how to deal with it. And he only partly even knows why he's feeling it, because he doesn't realize that the thing really hurting him isn't the prison time: It's the fact that Shiv doesn't care.
Hence y in the last season, *Spoilers* he shouts, "You were gonna see ME, GET SENT TO FUCKING PRISON,....SHIV!!!" cause shiv didn't really care/try to save em
Any time anyone, like Tom or his grandfather, use examples from basically any time of pre…. 21st literature 🙄 or use words that have basically more than three syllables 😂 (Im exaggerating but not much) Greg has an expression like this like it’s not IP he’s familiar with. I don’t know what age he is but he acts like he’s been educated on streaming, gaming and tik tok (culturally speaking) or is basically Gen Z, not even millennial which is what age I assume he is, but like he is part of the Covid kids who came of age being home schooled on zoom. To him classics are like one direction music pre-split. I realise this is very mean to more than Greg 🤭
I love watching Tom's character, there's such ambiguity to him. It's so hard to know what's really going on with him, and that just keeps you curious as hell.
@@patrickbarks997 I don’t think so anymore , she is just cold and they also have a different kind of relationship. *kinda spoilerish* maybe in earlier episodes that would be the case, but I felt in the last episode she literally was pushing a specific Congressman on Logan to be the next president because he promised her in their private exchange that he would put her father away once he is Prez and yea in the “president picking” scene, she definitely was pushing him.
Logan, I don't know how to tell you this but Shiv is in the hospital. She fell down a flight of stairs. I have a car ready to take you. Also Tom and Greg are MIA.
I just rewatched the first episode of the first season. Tom and Greg's first interaction is Tom being a total jerk towards Greg, and it happens immediately after Shiv have been an asshole to Tom. Quite a clear cause and effect, and we now just see how far it's gone.
I keep thinking about how Tom could have maybe saved himself (or at least cushioned the blow) by giving the press conference he wanted to in S1 but Greg snitched to Gerri and now everything is f*cked
@@CafeConLechi Gerri goes up to Greg and says he did the right thing. It’s in the same episode. Tom did think it’s Shiv though because Greg vehemently denied it and it’s more a Shiv thing to do. But it was definitely Greg
It probably would’ve been the smart move to give the press conference but even if Greg didn’t tell Gerri, I still feel like someone would’ve found out and stopped Tom from doing it
The way his voice is shaking at the end... Tom wants comfort and human connection so badly but is terrified to ask for it because of the toxic environment he's married into. Such a layered character and Macfadyen plays him perfectly. One of the best characters and onscreen performances of the last decade for sure.
At 1:17 you can really apreciate all of MMc acting skills. All the nuances, the correct time it takes for synapses to happen, and the blank starring... moreover, i think he keeps picking his teeth with the tongue as a great manerism to fisically represent the internal discomfort of something he has been ruminating for a while.
Tom gaslighting greg at the end....."I was joking...that is a big career obstable for you....RIGHT THERE" amazing how he retreats and tries to pass / disguise his intentions....soooo well acted
Love that at the end of this scene Tom tells Greg he's too hard to riff with, and then at the end of their last scene of the season Greg is riffing hard with Tom. He's learning from the best!
You know as a fandom we heart these two cause there interaction is soo good, but I think what the showrunner keeps trying to show us is how self-centered and unaware everyone involved with wealth are. I think what we will see is Greg Shiv all getting the tell tell sign of Tom's suicidal ideation but do nothing until his truly dead. When he does die it will hit them hard but because they are unaware they will be like what could I have done? You know? Thats my take at least.
He's been the constant kiss ass prick that you start to feel bad for this season. He knows he's bottom of the barrel and his own wife will sacrifice him without a second thought....
Much more likely would be a failed suicide attempt. It would be more in keeping with his nature. It would reinforce the idea that he's needy and wants attention. It would preserve him as a character on the show. So all-around it would be a better fit I think. Plus, "Tom does gay stuff in prison" would be a hilarious plotline. I and mean if they should treat it 100% with respect, I don't think rape jokes are funny. Nothing about dropping the soap. Just it would be funny to see Tom use prison as an excuse to be gay and then he gets out and pretends like he only compromised because it was prison.
Many have criticised Matthew MacFadyen as an actor dating back to Spooks (MI5). I always thought he was great, albeit a little reserved, but I think he silences every critic he has built up since 2002 with this performance. Absolutely brilliant.
This is missing when Tom first comes in and tells Greg to put his hands up like he's getting arrested and Greg looks terrified then "plays it off." It's so funny. Nicholas Braun and Matthew MacFayden are so good.
It took like 10 viewings to realize that the Nero and Sporus thing is so obviously about how he wanted to jump ship from Shiv and not just how weirdly infatuated he is with Greg. There’s so much homo eroticism I just forgot Tom was married
Question: Is Tom gay for Greg? Theory: I think there's definitely some ambiguity as to Tom's sexuality. Him swallowing his own load in the first season was a pretty big MAYBE sign. Like I said though, it's still ambiguous. Him saying gay stuff to Greg could easily just be a way of asserting dominance, since it clearly makes Greg uncomfortable (this has been the case since their first conversation). Castrating a slave and marrying them isn't a tender loving act. It IS undeniably, very gay but as a figure of speech it's a total act of domination, and Tom's always used Greg as a punching bag when he himself has felt belittled or undervalued. For me the primary obvious significance of this scene is Greg finally, unambiguously standing up to Tom. Not just in a "can I please blackmail you sir?" kind of way. He flat out raised his voice and gave him a firm no. He isn't Tom's bitch anymore and while he might play along with his jokes to an extent, that extent has shortened dramatically. Then there's the less obvious subtext, which has been building for a long time. Remember when he tried to seriously tell Shiv that he felt uncomfortable with the idea of taking orders from his wife and she responded by raising her voice and giving him an order? Yeah. Tom imagining himself as Nero might not be just or even at all about marrying a man. It may just be him fantasizing about pushing his wife down the stairs, and the dynamic of him feeling used and underappreciated by Shiv has been a theme since the very first episode. I think there's a real possibility that Tom joins Kendall and cuts a deal with the DOJ. How else is he going to avoid prison? He could also just go out on his own, but why not pool his resources with Ken, who has one of the best legal teams in the country and who's the only one out the entire family that's actually treated him like a brother, and not just Shiv's pet? Just a theory but man I hope it pans out. Kendall/Frank was a okay team, but Frank is literally just a lawyer. Kendall/Roman was fine except for Roman (to his credit, this was before he got more mature). Kendall/Greg was awesome for a bit, but again, Greg's not a prime mover. He understands leverage and plays the game somewhat well, but he's weak. Kendall definitely should have bought him that watch, but watch or no watch Greg isn't someone you send into an interrogation and trust not to flip. Tom is a heavyweight. And while he's had his gaffes over the show him and Kendall back to back would be a force to be reckoned with.
yeah tbh i think you're right, tom is most likely gay for greg (well technically he'd be bisexual i guess because he definitely seem to love shiv).... [SPOILERS] like in one of the latest episodes he literally went to celebrate with greg before anyone else and kissed him on the forehead (???) and when greg started talking about getting a girlfriend later in that episode tom's mood immediately flipped from being unbelievably happy about not going to jail to being just inexplicably miserable.. like i've thought about it so much and i can't think of any other explanation for that other than him being annoyed that greg is dating someone else - and he even says to greg 'you've ruined it' when all greg had done was ask a girl out..... much to think about
He is married to shiv for breeding purposes only I think he might be in love with Greg The awkward silence before asking him to wrestle him to the ground was interesting to me. You just told a man you would marry him, then you ask him to wrestle with you. I think we will find out soon enough.
A depressing beige office with no windows and bleak fluorescent light The series "Severance" really does a good job at showing just how utterly ridiculous and dehumanizing these types of working environments are
Hmm. Tom says "I'd castrate and marry you in a heartbeat." This is interesting. OK, I get that Greg is the "slave boy." Though, does this mean Tom is willing to "push his wife [Shiv] down the stairs?" Is Tom going to turn on Shiv somehow, effectively "killing" her? In a way, Tom has 'castrated and married' Greg by getting him to sign the papers. Pushing his wife down the stairs was left out, however. Intentional? Hmmm! Food for thought.
He has despised his wife since season 1’s finale with the “open relationship”. There is no way for him to gain throwing shiv under the bus (at this point) however if there was I’m sure he’d do it easily.
All the characters on the show have sold their souls for money, and suffer endlessly for it. If anyone can break that pattern, it's Tom. I'm here after his exchange with Kendall this week.
I'm reading this book about Nero (big book, decent book) and the author basically tries to rehabilitate Nero's reputation. The problem is, there is no way to put a positive spin on the Sporus thing. Nero still sucks, man.
this scene is foreshadowing tom’s betrayal of shiv in the finale. tom essentially pushes shiv down the stairs, and makes greg his “attack dog” like nero did with sporus. you’ll notice in the finale when tom talks to greg after his phone call with shiv, he says “do you want to come with me, sporus”.
@@Brandon-tk2rw Probably isn't wearing it here where he is doing something duplicitous, but that entire ep 3 arc makes me think he's about to sink Logan. And he does go out of his way to speak to Kendall first when he walks in.....
I just think that this might be the last for tom. I don't see him in future, i actually don't know how the law works but everybody say that he will ends up in jail. He seems to acknowledge that shiv doesn't love him and his loyalty for roy family didn't do much for him right now. He could've done press con in the past if only greg didn't talk to gerry
