Yeah I remember watching the episode for the first time I screamed in my heart "NOOOOOO that's the worst thing Greg could have said" while laughing my ass off :')
it always amazes me how people in this show can have the most awkward conversations or fights with absolutely zero shame or acknowledgment of the people in the room hearing everything
What's sad about this is that later on shiv asks tom for an open relationship at like their wedding night or something like that 😔 my guy is always getting dumped rip
@@iloveyoufor10000years that happened before. Wedding was season one. He wasn't going to freak out on Shiv so that blow-up was reserverd for greg here 😂
It's hilarious that there are other people in the room the whole time. Also Tom overriding the security guy "This is executive level business" as he proceeds to pelt Greg the Egg with bottles lmao.
Matthew Macfayden is amazing in this show. He absolutely captures a character I’ve seen in corporations: smug yet insecure, middle-class pretending to be upper-class, suburban/rural guy who thinks he’s so sophisticated and urbane. It’s like seeing real life.
@@ajtxx974 it's not just this episode, it's the whole show - no one is doing anything related to work in the show. It's almost like Succession continues to convey messages similar to American Psycho.
@@raghav3106 well what they are dramatizing is the seizing of power. Everyone's goal in the show is to get on top or on top of whatever they can. That's the work they do it's whoever has power trying to get power from others
The brilliance of this scene is in the subtext. Tom's reaction is based on the "arrangement" with Shiv, which he really hates, but cannot express. So this rejection, especially when Greg unfortunately frases "... like an open business relationship", triggers all those emotions that Tom had and cannot express properly in that other part of he's life. Brilliant writing and performance.
I realized that because of how Shiv wanted things "open" in their relationship, and then Greg trying to do the same thing in their "relationship"... even using the word "open" that set him off in so many ways. Every avenue of his life he's being told he's not enough or there's someone better, That's just my opinion. Funny scenes and great actors.
“I WILL NOT LET GO OF WHAT IS MINE” Line says it all, Tom has been made to feel like he isn’t enough and all the things he thought were his are slipping from his fingers, Greg is the last straw
I think it's Tom venting about his other open marriage. The what is mine line can be interpreted different ways but I'm pretty sure he doesn't think that he owns Gregory
William Holcomb can I ask what your interpretation of that line is? Mine was that Greg is probably the only character Tom feels he has supremacy over(true or not, taht is a different matter), and when Greg decided to leave or ‘break up with him’ Tom was upset as the only other person that wasn’t constantly fucking him was now, by that meaning, fucking him.
My guess is Greg is the only one from the “ family “ that Tom has any dominance over.. so he doesn’t wanna let Greg go otherwise Tom will be on the bottom of the chain..
I like how tom can't open the "normal" water bottle because it seems there are only huge capped voss water bottles in every elite board room or residence hahaha
This show is awesome, that detail for sure was on purpose, one of the writers is from peep show, and theres a lot of influence of that kind of sarcastic and a little of physical* humor.
True, but if you have ever tried to open a really cheap water bottle, this is what it is like. The bottle collapses before the cap unscrews. Still shows the difference between rich and poor though, they don’t have to deal with the cheap bottles in their board rooms, it’s for the plebs.
i love the delivery of "this is not... a good.... feeling, that you're making me have". the way he looks up and around as if searching for the words but is clearly just trying to maintain composure. good stuff.
Succession way funnier than people would think. I know they expect a Game of Thrones style drama but it's just nonsense like this that makes the show work so well 😂
I love when writers think that audience is intelligent enough to read between the lines. They didn't need to explain that this is a projection of Tom's insecurity with Shiv, in other shows they would probably be more explicit with the intention but that's what makes me love Succession.
"Business open relationship." I laughed out loud when I heard that because Tom had that in his personal life and now his professional life too. I love how Matthew Macfadyen brought both hilarity and pathos to Tom's character.
I think he went over the top because he's holding in his feelings towards his wife, his marriage so he took it out on Greg who too wants an open relationship. But a little funny lol
@@syedamaryam7223 I mean yeah as is the nature of the show, but they are still best friends they are just bad at it. They dont really have any one else. They are best friends, but they arent the best at it ya know?
Tom thinks Greg is the Tom of their relationship like he is the Tom with Shiv. But what's admirable is that at the end of season 2 Tom comes out with his feelings toward Shiv. He is a slimeball and bully but man, he deserves a break.
This is how Tom wants to react with shiv but can’t. Tom is the only person Greg can sort of control but he has lost his grip on him and he’s exploring his options now and branching out. It’s weird because he treats Greg how shiv treats him.
I love Tom outburst lmao at 3:36 . And the cherry on top is the slight happy/light soundtrack starting to play as to signal that that moment is not dramatic
2:46 that was the moment Greg realized he can impact Tom in an equal way. Tom gets pushed around by his brother in laws, but Greg usually is seen as not having as much power.
so i was just casually browsing around to see Matthew Macfadyen videos on youtube (because i watched Pride & prejudice last week and i'm 100% in love with him) and i came to this video, and holy crap this scene is amazing. i don't even know who Tom and Greg is, i just really want to see succession now.
Near the end of the scene with Greg pleading “you’re one of my best friends!” while Tom launches the water bottles at him reminds me so much of the end of There Will Be Blood, with Eli saying “we’re brothers!” while getting bowling pins thrown at him. Doesn’t help that I feel like Greg could be played by Paul Dano in another universe.
Obvious subtext aside it’s really fascinating how intentionally and explicitly the writers keep weaving this pattern. Tom is forced to be painfully passive in his marriage and his dealings with the family, so he takes it out almost exactly by being aggressive with Greg or anyone unfortunate enough to be his (perceived) inferior. Textbook definition of hurt people hurting people, plus it’s written so blatantly and awkwardly that it feels totally realistic
