For the point of accuracy, the latin etymology of ‘fetus’ does not mean baby. It means, more neutrally, ‘offspring’ or to elaborate ‘bringing forth'. The Latin term for baby is ‘infans’. Even ancient Romans could differentiate between a foetus and a baby.

Ask the same gentleman what he will do to support that baby once it's been born. We he support through increased taxes free daycare, increased maternity leave, food support, vision and dental care, mental health support, free college, and anything else that will support that child and mother through the child's life?

The question to ask this caller is if he was in a room that was on fire and a there was a one week old baby in a crib on one side, and on the other side was a medical incubator with 10 fertilized human eggs in it (what the caller considers to be no different than actual babies), and he only had time to run to one side of the room, which one would he save; the one or the ten?

I always loved the heartbeat argument. Why the heart and the heartbeat? Why that specific life signal? Why not certain ECG signals? Why not enzymatic activity? Why not a functioning lung taking in air? Why not the first kick? These would all render what we consider a baby/human to a different stage of the pregancy. Who and where decided that we draw the line at the heartbeat, and what's the relevance of it? It sounds like a terribly sentimental and not-at-all objective outdated dogma, that most likely comes from "feelings in the heart" (that we know happen in the brain)...i guess somebody somewhere decided that once there's a heartbeat, there are feelings and thoughts, and then it's suddenly a person. A heart is just as much a bunch of cells as a blastocyte is, just a bigger bunch of cells. I don't know why I'm expecting objective thingking from people who buy first row tickets to watch women go through the most difficult decision of their lives, in their free time, for funzies.

I love hearing anti abortion campaigners. They're never campaigning outside the DWP office to ensure every child has the support needed. I've never seen them out side a clinic with their adopted family, because every child deserves a loving family. In an ideal world I'd like to see abortion not illegal but a relic of our past because every woman is confident enough to raise their child. Nevertheless we're no where near that point, so it's an acceptable evil.

But, if this caller wishes to use the definitions of a dead language he should only be offered medical care and technology that was available at the time that language was widely used outside of the church.
