"Fox on the Run" was first recorded by the English band Manfred Mann as a single issued in November of 1968, which reached #5 in the UK pop charts by the following month. It was later introduced to bluegrass by Bill Emerson and quickly became a bluegrass favorite. In 1976,Tom T. Hall covered the song on his Album, "Magnificent Music Machine", where it reached the #1 position on the Billboard Country Charts.
Vocals: Tom T. Hall
Words & Music: Tony Hazzard
Original Album: Magnificent Music Machine (Mercury Records - 1976)
Lyrics:
She walks through the corn leadin' down to the river
Her hair shone like gold in the hot mornin' sun
She took all the love that a poor boy could give her
And left me to die like a fox on the run
Like a fox, like a fox, like a fox on the run

Now everybody knows the reason for my fall
A woman tempted me down in Paradise Hall
This woman tempted me and she took me for a ride
Like a lonely fox, boys, I need a place to hide

She walks through the corn leadin' down to the river
Her hair shone like gold in the hot mornin' sun
She took all the love that a poor boy could give her
And left me to die like a fox on the run
Like a fox, like a fox, like a fox on the run
Oh, we'll drink a glass of wine, boys, to fortify our soul
We'll talk about the world and the friends we used to know
I see a string of girls who have put me on before
The game is nearly over and the hounds are at the door
She walks through the corn leadin' down to the river
Her hair shone like gold in the hot mornin' sun
She took all the love that a poor boy could give her
And left me to die like a fox on the run
Like a fox, like a fox, like a fox on the run

So you’re that guy. You’ve caused me enormous grief. I was on the road with a bluegrass band for decades and had to do this song over and over and over. Requested almost every night and it wasn’t even a song I’d recorded. But seriously you sure have quite the legacy if you’d never written anything else. That’s the sort of song that all songwriters dream of writing: a bonafide classic for all the ages. That song will be sung 200 years from now if civilization stands.

@@HazzardTony Thank you. And as a songwriter my own self I confess to being a bit star struck. Tom T was one of my best friends and paid you quite the compliment by recording this. As you know he recorded very few songs that he didn’t write. I do think, however, that the definitive bluegrass version (though not the first bluegrass version, which many do not realize) was the Country Gentlemen cut circa 1971. After Charlie Waller sang that song it stayed sung. Anyway I think I’m qualified to say that Rocky Top and Fox On the Run are the two most requested bluegrass songs ever. Take care and good to see you’re still around. I’ve heard your name forever it seems and never dreamed I’d communicate with you. My heroes have always been songwriters. Take care.

R.I.P. Tom T. Hall.. "Fox on the Run" is one of my all time favorite recordings of yours. I first heard of Tom T. through his guest appearances on the television show, 'Nashville Now'. I also recall that Tom T. did commercials for Tyson chicken. This was in the mid 1980s. I was born in the mid 1970s so I was still a child...when I'd see him on television I'd always wonder why he held his guitar in such a unique way. I have several CDs of his and a 1995 box set. Almost all of his songs are online so I rarely play the CDs anymore.

I've listened to Country music for as long as I remember. Although I am from western N.C. where Bluegrass music is prevalent, this is the song that got me interested in in that form of music at the age of 14, way back in 1976. Nobody does this song as well as Tom T. Hall and there are some great versions out there.

Thank you for all your positive comments, especially Steven S and Lucy B: much appreciated. JasonL77, I wrote this song long before The Sweet's song. They copied the title and even the rising harmonies. By the way, someone told me that all the different versions of FOTR (my song, not Sweet's!) have been viewed 1.4 million times on RU-vid. I like the Zac Brown Band version, too.

I was known for cuttin' a rug or two, and my wife of 28+ years and I met for the very first time dancing to this very song. That band was gracious enough to come play our wedding and instead of a more traditional tune, the two of us chose this one for our first dance as a married couple.
