If you were around in the seventies? Tom T.Hall, Bobby Bare(Bear) Ray Stevens Jim Stafford, Hoyt Axton ,Jerry Reed, and lord forgive me if I leave anyone else out. Look them up for lots of laughs
My dad loved this song 2022. Asked me to sit to listen to it and I had other things on my mind. What I wouldn't give to have him ask me to sit and listen to it again. He passed in August 2022
Not a person in the crowd made a single sound while he sang. They all knew the story, had heard the song a zillion times, BUT the storyteller was right in front of them and they all knew they were being blessed by greatness....live.
@Abe Lincoln...I could have said it better myself. I grew up listening to him. His songs were soothing, uplifting, heart-touching. One of a kind talented man. May he RIP💖💔💖
So, this guy can get up in front of a full auditorium by himself with an acoustic and keep people spellbound, you could hear a pin drop, and probably half of them are trying not to cry they're so moved by this. Wow, will he be missed.
I'm 65 just like the Ol Grey Haired Gentleman in the song. Laying here on my Bed with my 5 Dogs and listening to Tom T Hall just as my Dad did with me God Bless you Tom T Hall 🙏
I'm lying here in bed with my two cats right now. I'm 59 & 1/2. I'm crying tonight while listening to the old country kings who have left this earth, and remembering listening to them when I was young. My heart is broken. I thought they would all live forever, or at least as long as I do. 😢
I guess I have had watermelon wine. Been about 40 years. That is if buying one of those olds Stone Mountain melons and injecting it with a 1/5 of rum counts. Then chilling it and eating slices of the next day. I can find the rum. But those big old dark green watermelons are hard to come by now. I bit like finding a Charly McClain concert.
That old dog, a 15yr old pit female, when I hit the floor, 911 got called, that old 15yr old pit played on me, no one was allowed to touch me. My mother, pulled her to my side and laid on her, so rescue squad could get me out of the house and to the hospital. I'm that old dogs lifeline, and she's mine❤❤❤❤
I'm 38, I grew up listening to Tom and all the greats, wish they were still here, the world was better when we had country music, my hats off to the ol timers 👍
Oh how my heart hurts tonight. I loved Tom T. Hall and losing him saddens me greatly. This song was my favorite of all his songs and it had quite an affect on my own life. Now i am over 65, nearing 68, and this song still means a lot to me. Thanks, Mr. Hall, you surely will be missed.
The lyric,"God bless little children, while they're still too young to hate," may be the most profound one I've ever heard; ( written during such a tumultuous time in US history. If the story's true, the old, Black gentleman was very wise) Anyone who's missed his music has missed so much.
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 it would be interesting if that old gray black gentleman was still around and did a spot on someone's show telling about meeting Tom T. Hall.
You notice he doesn't rub up against anyone. He doesn't twerk or jump around like a clown. He just uses his God given talent which young people of today know nothing about. Love this guy.
I'm watching this in June 2021. I'm 71 years old and how this brings back the memories of what real country music is. I was raised on it. Touches the heart and soul that none today does. Thank God for classic country music.
I was blessed to have grown up attending sing alongs at my buddies farm (cook shed outback) ... Tom actually played at their country resturant/bar and stayed at their farm (likely was in the cookshed) i was overseas in the service at the time. Great musician. He was/is a national treasure
You are so right Jay, I am a 69 year old English guy who found real country late in life. Makes me nostalgic, moves me to feelings too hard to describe. Wonderful songs and artists, wish I could have seen them live.
Met Tom T. at the restaurant I worked at in Apalachicola,Fla. He was a gentleman NO DOUBT. He pulled Ms.Dixie's chair out so she could be seated first. My late father's favorite as well as mine. Told Mr. Hall I grew up on his music and his reply was.... More kids should have...RIP Mr.Tom T. Hall... YOU WILL BE FOREVER IN MY MEMORIES😘🥰🙋
Im 15 and all i can say is Tom T Hall, Johnny Cash, and Marty Robinson have saved me from modern music. I cant stand the stuff but Tom is just amazing. My generation has been lied to about what music is good.
+Blaine Patrick I agree with you 100%.Today's generation really does not know what good music is. I also cannot listen to ANY of the modern music. One thing I like to do is play this song over and over and listen to the story behind the words of the song - have you ever done that?
Dan Bern, Todd Snider, Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains, fuck man there's only so many lines to list. Radio music ain't music, it's filler for the ads. We've got it just like Tom, Cash, Dylan, Townes, Muddy, Blind Willie.... just a bit harder to find these days. Check out Bo Ladner... killer dude that does a killer Johnny Cash show, a la the Elvis impersonator days.... peace and hair grease my man.
I'm 56 now and my mom past away in February of 2018. When I was a child we used to sit around as a family and listen to music together. Tom T. Hall was one of those we listen to and this song was one that stood out. Tears welled up at hearing him sing it, bringing back memories of a different time for this world. Those times, I'm afraid will never return, but thankfully Christ will return and a better time than even those old times will come.
"Old dogs" are those with wisdom, "children" are those with idealism, "watermelon wine" is what helps you deal with the injustices of the world. I love Tom T. Hall.
It’s not often that the loss of a celebrity or musician effects me but this one hurts. Rest In Peace Tom. You’re going to be missed. The world was truly a better place because you were in it.
Just heard the passing of Tom T. Hall. And had to listen to his music. R.I.P. to the story teller of country music. You will be missed . But your music will be played forever.
This was a favorite of my sister in law who joined her sister, my wife, a couple of days ago in heaven. More tears. It won't be much longer before my number is up, and I'm judged. Meanwhile, I'll continue praying to join them in singing these great country songs. TGP
Sorry brother it's a rough road.. My mama past five years ago now. I played Elvis gospel for her the night she left us. She made eye contact and visibility relaxed..shortly afterward she was gone. Music is a miraculous thing.. I wish you well.
Hugs to you both, I lost my Dad in March 2016 not from Congestive heart failure,, this is the music that he loved, and I grew up hearing on the radio, so therefore I also have an appreciation for the old country music...
Sorry you are going through the hell that dementia is. I'm in a similar situation and can emphasize a little. One day, they say, it will all be over. Looking for that day myself.
STAY STRONG, YES,, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL THRU THE LORD JESUS CHRIST ❣❣PLAY SONGS 4 UR MOM, I went to the same thing with my mom in 2010 nursing home with dementia I feel you only got prayers with you music if I allow any service job in a special thank you do that lady want to like only you may know to bring peace and happiness make as many good memories as you can prayers for healing and strength always open adore didn't find any kind of Civility group Tanger out there just ask someone if you can't I don't know how old you are but anyway take video and pictures even if you think you don't want to now you will probably be later or someone will God bless
@@JackieBlue65 Hello!!! How are you doing? Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you are a fan? Have a great day… Stay Safe!
My sister was a lifelong fan and, when her husband got her tickets for his concert in London for her birthday, he remembered and invited her back stage. Absolute legend of a storyteller and a man
How terrible. I can think of nothing more painful than losing a child. I hope you have trust you will meet that boy again one day in a world far better than this one.
I feel your pain sir and thank God for my kids, grand-kids and in due in November my first great Grandchild. But tonight, when I lay me down, I'll be thinking of you and your boy.
RIP Tom T Hall, you brought a tear to my eye hearing this song, because of my father playing this when I was a kid. You brought happiness to many, over the years. When you get up there and settled, look up my dad and his old buddy Reggie Waters and play this song for them. Godspeed Sir.
The songs, singers and musicians in heaven must be the most beautiful thing. For all of you that continue to keep songs like this alive through these postings a BIG Thank you.
I'm in love with this song! I'm 27 and have very little knowledge of country music or Tom T. Hall, but the way this man tells this story through song is beautiful. It's a wonderful illustration of the human experience and I hope it lives on forever.
I grew up with this wonderful " Story Teller!" Love ALL of his music and don't have a favorite. Well, NOT counting this one. I'm 64 this past November and to this day remember almost all of his music to this day. There will NEVER be a master story teller like Tom T. Hall, NEVER!!
I'm 75 and I play and sing his music a lot, I used to play the old dogs and watermelon song at the radio station when I was DJing back in the 80's, and that song got to be kind of like El Paso it was our bathroom song,it would play long enough for us to get to the toilet and back to the board, still love Tom t Hall!
My dad loved this song when I was growing up. I didn't like it myself, now 30 years later here I am trying to listen to it everyday. My dad was 65 years and 11 months old when he passed away. I like to make myself believe he is really in Miami drinking on some watermelon wine. I miss you daddy
Isn't it crazy that we never fully appreciate those things when there happening. But they create an anchor to the past that we can visit anytime we want and remember when times were simpler..alot of my family loved that song that are no longer with me...I miss those times
45 years ago I separated from my wife and children as things became unworkable. My ex tried every trick in the book to stop me from seeing or talking my children, such was the scorn. Then one day I heard Tom T's song I Left You Some Kisses On Your Door. I thought how explanatory the lyrics were for our situation as often I would go to see the kids as arranged and they wouldn't be home, my ex would have taken them somewhere and I would just stare at the front door and would just kiss my fingers and touch the door before I left. l couldn't believe it when i heard this song, it was exactly our situation. I made a copy of the song and sent it to my ex and I couldn't believe it when my eldest daughter rang me and told me her mother had got her to ring me. Who said there wasn't power in words. Thank you Tom T. You left such a mark on this world.
Tom T, Johnny, Waylon, Charlie Pride, Merle, Billie Joe Shaver, George Jones, Conway, Marty Robbins, Ray Price, Johnny Paycheck, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens, Faron Young, Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, and so many more my dad introduced me to are gone now. Now, Dad is getting ready for his meeting with our maker. Thank you dad for making me the man I am today. And for showing me Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Blake Shelton, and Jason Aldean are all a group of people who have been manufactured by Nashville. None of which are true artists. You were right, dad. Someone is pissing on our leg and telling us it's raining.
My father sang this song back in the 70s. I haven’t heard it again until finding this. It brought me to tears. Missing my father deeply. It’s about innocence.
I remember the days standing on the seat besides my father in his 71 ford truck. I will always have this and others in my heart. I'm 58 now these songs will live on sign. Sleepless in. Sevierville. T. N.
He is 84 years old this year, and all I can say is this man is a gift from God, to country music. He is priceless, and there aren't many like him left! Treasure this people.
@@Mikebaillie2024 I think I read that his autopsy showed a certain drug in there that he used to take to prevent him from drinking. I forgot the name of it. He struggled with alcohol addiction his whole life. He must have had a relapse or something.
I grew up listening to Tom T Hall, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson , Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette , George Jones , Bill Anderson and all the country music greats.
I loved Tom T and cried the day he died. Loved all his music since my 4yr old daughter sat on his lap. Never got to be near him again, but cherished that moment. He will be missed!
I’m gonna have to put in for early retirement if I don’t put my phone down. I literally could listen to this music 8 hours a day. God bless all of you greats for what you have given all of us.
Probably the biggest amount of respect the audience gave to Tom T Hall during this performance was they kept quiet and listened to the song in its entirety. Even when the camera panned on the audience you never saw any talking or whispering or laughing - you saw that he had their full attention. They even waited until his last strum on the guitar before they started applauding.
When an artist, especially a country singer/writer reaches the level of a Tom T Hall, I think it is expected. I would not have done anything to take away from the moment if I had a chance to hear him live.
Dragonfoe "Expected"? Yes. "Given"? Not necessarily so. I remember when I was younger in N. Carolina and stumbled onto the filming of a Matlock episode. The scene was one where Andy and a lady were supposed to get out of a taxi in front of the county courthouse. When they called for quiet, even the noisy birds shut up (how they did that I'll never know). But there was some dumb ass who kept whistling "The Fishin' Hole" - the theme song for the old Andy Griffith Show. It took 4 or 5 re-takes before he'd shut up. Respect is only as good as those who understand what it means.
Dave Speener Well, that may be a case of apples vs oranges... nobody paid to be on that set in that scenario, this was a paid audience and people want to hear the artist, not some yahoo whistling. I would not put Andy up with Tom T Hall personally. But still, I see your point.
Dragonfoe I've seen concerts where people have paid and still the screaming and whistling were so loud that no one could hear the music. Your point is a rather weak one. Yes, Tom T did deserve the kind of respect he got, and by the same token, Andy deserved the respect he didn't get. Both performers put in the long years and worked hard on their craft to become the success that they are (or were, in Andy's case). Though different genres, they still deserved the respect that should be afforded people of their status. So, it all goes back to the listeners. Paid or not, the respect should have been there.
Dave Speener OK, so chalk it up to "Some crowds are nice and some are crap" he just lucked out and got a nice one. I was only talking about my view and how I approach concerts and shows.
I'm 73 and I get the bit about the old dogs. Our dogs aren't so old but I hope they get there. I miss our dogs that got too old. True treasures. My tipploe is grape wine. Grandchildren are a challenge these days but I hope I helped set their values.
On this fathers day,i can remember my dad listening to tom and all the other legends whenever he could. Every time I listen to real country music like this i think of him and remember how much he loved it..he had good taste ! Tks for the memory
Tom T Hall, what a hell of an entertainer and such a gifted songwriter. Recently we have lost so many greats of country music, men and women, so sad. It is understandable though seeing the greatest were all born 70 to 85 years ago. We expect these wonderfully gifted beings to live forever. Bye Tom T, thank you for your great music, rest in peace
Tom sang this song from the back seat of my Camaro as I drove him from bar to bar in Phoenix to sing and help promote him new L.P. and get more radio airplay on the west coast. I was the morning D.J. on a country music station in Phoenix. What a night, what a memory and what a treat! Thanks Tom, I guess it worked pretty good. W. Steven Martin Broadcasters Hall of Fame!
Today we lost a great storyteller and a top of the line singer. A lot of singers should follow Tom T. Hall lead and the glorious path he left us. We lost a great, a legend. RIP.
I’m going to be cremated, and the ashes of my beloved dogs, buried with me, and on my tombstone, my name, and ,” Old Dogs, and children, and watermelon wine below that. Thank you, Tom.
The BEST STORY TELLER. Could listen to him all day long. Thank you Tom T. HALL FOR your soothing voice and great songs! May you rest in peace and sing for all the ones in heaven.
One of the greatest songs ever written. Tom T has so many great songs. One day I started listening to so many Tom T songs I had never heard before. Just an amazing song writer.
He is definitely an influence on my songwriting. I had the awesome privilege, many years ago, of sitting maybe 10' away - same level (at an after-dinner show), directly in front of Tom T. in Tampa, FL in 1979. Loved the chat with him between his songs. He was so down to Earth & a very humble human being... & very grateful to his fans. I have always cherished the memories of that night ever since! RIP, Tom T. Hall.... ❤️
NOBODY could ever ever ever do this song justice like he did - absolutely heartwrenching - I get goosebumps just thinking about it.. Always makes me cry - the words are so beautiful - thank you thank you thank you. GimliGoolie..
I just noticed this video, but I wasn't aware that Tom T.Hall had passed away; This wonderful song he wrote, I first heard it when It was released, & I was 12 years old at the time, & I've loved this song ever since. This country performer was one of a kind, & he will be missed by all of us who loved his music! RIP Mr. Hall, we miss you already!
