Here are all of Tom Waits' Letterman appearances.
The Bird Network Years:
1. December 21, 1983. Tom performs "Frank's Wild Years," chats with Dave, then performs another song, "The Nickel."
2. February 6, 1986. "Tango Til They're Sore," chat, and "Time."
3. October 16, 1987. Chat, then "More Than Rain."
4. October 5, 1988. "Straight to the Top" and chat.
Late Show:
5. September 27, 1999. "Chocolate Jesus" and chat.
6. May 8, 2002. "All the World Is Green" and chat.
7. September 28, 2004. Chat, then "Make It Rain."
8. November 27, 2006. Chat, then "Lie to Me."
9. July 9, 2012. Chat, then "Chicago."
10. May 14, 2015. Chat, then "Take One Last Look at the Place That You Are Leaving."
Note: The graphic card date that had Tom' first LNwDL appearance as "February 21, 1983," is incorrect; that was actually the date when Sly Stone appeared on the show. The date as I have above, December 21, 1983, was Tom's debut appearance. Notice the Christmas decorations in the studio.
What probably happened was that someone wrote down "12-21-83," but the person who typed in the date didn't see the "1" in front of the "2," thus the month February ("2") instead of December ("12").

I admire how Letterman has these great people on his show. The first appearance he is a bit uncertain, then he chats with them, maybe they perform, and BOOM Dave is a fan, and Dave is the best fan they can have. He did that with Tom, and Peter O’Toole, and Richard Harris. Kudos to Letterman for enriching all of us with insights into these great people.

interesting juxtaposition of comments. reads almost as one point. I'd amend the original to, "Tom Waits is so refreshingly IN his mind" Tom tastes out of step becuz we're trained to secede from our minds. he refuses. which makes him intolerable to those comfortably conformingly self-seceded

@@oughtssought1198 I share your sentiments on Tom Waits, particularly that he is IN his mind AND that he's not only tolerable, he is beloved. I've admired him and his quirky perspective since I first encountered him on the Martin Mull/Fred Willard Fernwood Tonight show from the '70s. Whether he played a DJ in "Down by Law" or a prospector in the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, his portrayals were as believable and unique as they were a joy to watch. His music is wholy original and fabulous. Whether he is in reality just an average guy (both his parents were teachers) who's putting on an act, his observations are astonishingly astute and meaningful. He is private and guarded, but so is Dylan and so are many others in the public eye, protecting themselves from endless intrusion. He also seems to be a decent family guy, married for over 40 years, with 3 kids. How any of that makes him intolerable or crazy, to me at least, is what's truly nuts. When the "mainstream" features environmental devastation and endless violence, which is then embraced and viewed as "normal," I prefer Tom's stream...

George Duvivier on bass on Tom's first appearance is a real treasure. He's one of the all-time great jazz bassists and the fact that so many exceptional jazz musicians (Shelly Manne, Jim Hugart, Pete Christlieb, etc) played with him speaks a lot to his unique talent. He's gone on to other, more eclectic sonic vistas since, but none of that takes away from the majesty of those early years.

Mr. Waits' musical & poetic style is truly a matter of taste, or maybe one of those things you grow to appreciate over time. No question at all, he's funny as heck, if you like "dry" and "irony" (I love both). I saw some of these performances, hit-and-skip over years of watching Letterman. Only NOW are my feeds (musical and otherwise) populating and volunteering with Waits' work. And I've grown to love most of it. One of the remaining artists of "way old stuff," or things styled after that, or an improvement on that.

Tom Waits never stops. I reckon he'll keep putting out a few albums out after he passes away of unreleased works.... and then a few new songs after that lol. Jah Bless Tom Waits! May he live another 73 years!

it doesn't get much cooler than Tom Waits. but letterman having the man on his show this many times is pretty fucking cool.

Grateful to have seen Tom Waits many times in early 70’s at Richard Harding’s club, The Quiet Knight, on Wells in Chicago and another terrific club, Harry Hopes, west of Chicago, in Cary Illinois. Saw Willie Dixon frequently at HH and a particularly memorable show by Ronee Blakely there. Those were the days my friend. We thought they would never end.

Tom isn't "accessible." He's either someone your ears love or hate. He isn't marketable, and only a handful of his works have become universal anthems (Downtown Train, Tango, etc.). But the fact Dave has taken him on his guest, and invited Tom to play his fucking weird-ass songs (that were sure to take him down a few notches in ratings) is just... great.. Really glad Tom had a national platform to put his best face on, decade after decade. Awesome stuff. Not a lot of artists (who are true to themselves and their craft) are given this gift.

Dave always seemed to have an affinity and a certain affection for quirky songwriters: Warren Zevon, Steve Earle, and Tom Waits.

He definitely had a lot of weird-ass, quirky artists on his show when it first began---it really gave the show a genuine underground vibe at the time---this being the early '80s and all.

I loved it when Dave would introduce Warren. He would always say "A Friend of the Show". That had to Warren feel good. He is a great talent & I miss him.

Can we take a moment and appreciate that Tom Waits never stopped making music even as he was getting older. The fact that he never dropped off and stayed true to himself and his style is absolutely amazing. There never was nor will there be another Tom Waits! Even if you wanted to, you could try to be like him but that wouldn't work, you could try and be "inspired" by him and that wouldn't work either lol. You would have to do your own thing that doesn't sound anything like Tom Waits and then... maybe then, you might channel Tom Waits's energy.

Jessica Stoke, I think certain artists are timeless. Your timing doesn’t matter, because neither did theirs. I was introduced to his music in the early 90’s, but I was on a Smashing Pumpkins and Leonard Cohen trip. But lately (past two years), it’s been Tom Waits. I love his role in Wrist Cutters.
