My New Guide on BER Treatments: • Complete Guide on Toma...
*Just do this ONE time and water consistently.
Blossom End-Rot turns the bottom of your tomatoes brown. It occurs because your plants can't easily utilize the calcium in the soil or their is not enough calcium in the soil for the plant. In either case I recommend adding lime in the form of a liquid slurry.
Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) how often do you need to add calcium?
@AndyFaeBaker0890
@AndyFaeBaker0890 5 лет назад
Mr. Gary Hello I have been watching your tomatoe videos. I live in Missouri and I have two potted tomatoe plants. We have been having a huge amount of rain here which I believe it what started my BER SITUATION. LOL so I went and bought lime. Mine was brown. Is this correct? Yours looked grey. Also i watched your APHID video. Oh man it truly works!!!!! I did two treatments and they were dead within hours!!

@horseblinderson4747
@horseblinderson4747 3 года назад
It can also happen if your soil gets to acidic, often times there's plenty of calcium. It just can't be used because either of the PH or because the roots are too dry, wet, or don't get enough oxygen. I've of the ways this works is that lime is slightly alkiline as well as being a buffer so it'll raise your pH but only do high. As well as not adding excessive Nitrate which can cause it too.

Very good information Gary! You can also take two crushed 750-1000 mg Tums tablets and add them to a gallon of water, then thoroughly soak the roots with that mixture. You can also put those crushed tablets in a gallon of water in a pump sprayer and spray directly on to the leaves of the tomato plant.

You have to be careful with crashing tums or other chewable inacids due to also having baking soda. Chewable inacids will do in a pinch but it's definitely not something I'd do often or very long. Your better off getting calcium sulfate for gardening.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN

You can. However it takes some time for the eggshells to give up their calcium. They are good to use at planting. In an emergency I like the lime because the root systems can pick it up quicker.

There can be calcium in the soil and a plant might not be able to use because of other deficiencies. I am not sure how potassium effects calcium uptake but I do recall it can cause problems. Adding calcium won't hurt.

Bone mean also works well for blossom end rot, but can not be mixed with water like this. I have used it this year by just dumping bone meal on the plants, and then watering them so the powder/product runs down and into the soil. I will for sure be using this method in my future container and soil grows. I hear it's great for peppers as well. Thanks for sharing Gary.

Not sure if my other post go through. Yes PH is concern but not at this quantity. Container soil is changed often and if you are added things to your garden it should work out fine. Think like peat moss or even liquid fertilizers that have an acidity to them. Calcium when planting and this supplement 1x a season. It is just 2 handfuls per gallon that will be spread out over several plants.

@@aidanngreenwolfe200 my PH is already around 7 so I'm going with Gypsum. There is 15% Sulfur in the pelletized Gypsum that I purchased so it may even lower my PH to 6.5.6.7 which is perfect for tomatoe plants. If my PH drops under 6, I wouldn't be afraid to use Lime as shown in video.

Thank you, I will try that. This is the first time I've ever had this happen. This year I tried growing tomatoes in planters on my deck & I was mortified when I saw the rotted spots on the bottom as I picked them off the plant. I hope your remedy works!

I'm not sure how building lime differs. Gypsum is a good alternative to adding calcium to your garden. It supposedly doesn't affect ph.

Yes, I bought the beefsteak and Roma from home depot. I started the red pear tomato plants from seed. The Roma tomatoes are producing a lot, although they are really small, but only one of the beefsteak plants has any tomatoes on it and it only has two tomatoes so far. I don't see any tomatoes on the other beefsteak tomato plants.

Great vid. I added pulverized lime to my soil in the beginning of the season this year and no end rot as of yet - fingers crossed. Last year, I had a big problem with end rot. So the lime definitely seems to be working for me this year.

I was wondering why he suggested pelletized lime rather than pulverized. Both should work I would imagine.

When in doubt a little liquid fertilizing won't hurt. Your right rain and watering does rinse the container soil. A little lime will prevent blossom end rot.

Hmm curious as to why you cant put it right in. Because it is pulverized I am assuming there would be concern it would be concentrated on top of the soil and possible damage surface root leaves. Are you putting it on tomatoes with blossom end rot or just adding it into your garden for future soil development?

Good information and thanks. Sure wish I'd found this earlier but I am now forewarned for next growing season! I added a LOT of dolomite lime to all my pots last fall for overwintering and I think that created a problem with uptake of calcium!

Thanks, Gary. All I have is containers and a small raised bed. I'm not showing any signs of blossom end rot, but it has been pouring rain for over a week here in Atlanta. I'm thinking rain may have washed my fertilizer away so I should do this.

Gary, this is quick, easy, and eminently doable. I had watched your 'use eggshells and white vinegar' video, and the family dutifully collected eggshells along with me.... but here it is July, (what?!) and I haven't gotten around to using the darn dried eggshells, which are merely resting in a small copper compost bin in our pantry! As my grown from seed and bought in a nursery tomatoes are both going crazy big and strong, (like I have NEVER seen before) in both container and plot, and massive amounts of tomato flowers have just appeared (and peppers have fruits already thumb sized), I thought, Yowza! 'Time for Lime.' So, I found some "Garden Lime" at El Big Box [Lowe's], made the 'Tomato café au lait' slurry, and give my toms/pepps/zukes their version of a 'caffeine jolt.' I can now set up the eggshell/vinegar solution, and put it in, at end of season, to amend soil for the future. But this time, I am NOT going to have BER either in my containers or in the garden bed, thanks to the Rusted Garden! Your videos rock, as the kids say....

Eggshells are good to add every year. They take some time to breakdown so its a longer term fix. Limestone will act quickly.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN 11 лет назад
That is a tuff question to answer. First you need good drainage and that will prevent over watering. Second you have to know your zone. The key is to never let container tomatoes dry out. I have to increase my watering form 1x every other day, to 1x a day, to 2x a day with saucer water reserve come the heat. For the ground 2x a week when it is cooler. 3-4 week when the heat hits. There is not exact method. Using soaker hoses creates a more even a routine wathering habit. I dont use them.

My husband saw that putting a raw egg/shell in the hole before you plant was good. Also powdered milk. We did both these things on his plants and his first two tomatoes have end rot. I had ever heard of that before but lots of times we had it on one branch or just a few of tomatoes and then it went away on its own. I will report back on my plants to let you see which worked the best. We will also try the lime or gypsum as someone else suggested.

When I initially planted my seedlings, I had stirred in crushed eggshells into the soil. I also followed your advice in pulverizing eggshells in a coffee grinder. It made a kind of powder that I added to a cup of water and apply like once every couple of weeks. Not everything dissolves, but I suspect the small particles will break down in due time. No BER but my tomatoes are young. Do you think adding lime would be overkill at this point?

Thanks for the tip! I used miracle grow potting soil this year and was surprised to have this issue. I also amended my raised garden bed with miracle grow garden soil and my zucchini started strong the faltered and turned yellow as well. Researching some say calcium is again the culprit. So, I put the slurry in my zucchini as well. My question is how often do you need to continue to do this? Once a week, month? Or, just once? Thanks for the help.
@1775novten
@1775novten 11 лет назад
I think the soil may be a huge contributing factor. The red pear that is in my bed that is tilled and amended native soil is growing out of control. The ones that are in my taller raised bed with garden soil bought from the store aren't doing so good. So can see in my vids the two different locations that I'm referring to. I need to add an update vid to show the huge difference between the two.
