I can't believe that I am harvesting my very first tomato. Indeed, my very first plant. I've been watering too much but I stopped just in time, although I had some peach shaped chubby tomatoes, LOL. And because they are in containers I cover the soil with plastic when the rain comes.

I grow 40 tomato plants each year with about 15 of them Roma type and I only get end rot on the Romas for some reason. We have highly very high calcium soil that actually fizzes if you pour household vinegar on it and pH is about 7.5 in the tomato beds so pretty clear like you said it’s not a calcium supply problem.

The soil in the desert I live in dries out fast so I’ve been water challenged for the last 3 years. Learning daily. A little water deeply and that is key here in the Palm Springs area. Even if soil has moisture in the morning, you have to give a light showering. deeply. Blossom end rot is definitely a watering issue.

I add a lot of bone meal at regular intervals, and water every day, except on days when it rains like hell. Mulch, mulch, mulch. This year, I got BER on just one bell pepper. Zero tomato BER!

It's been my experience that very dry conditions are more likely to give you BER than wet. Certainly, many other issues can happen in a wet season, i.e., blight, but to me, it's always been in dry years. This year it has been incredibly dry on the prairies, and I see tons of posts in my local Facebook gardening groups with people asking about BER. I know that the literature talks about too wet being a cause, but it seems less so than allowing your tomatoes to dry out. They also talk about using ammonia-based fertilizers being a contributor and a few other things, but I always seem to find that none of those things is as important as keeping your tomatoes from ever getting too dry. I have to say that my garden beds drain very well. I have them mounded up, so there is rarely a time when they would become waterlogged. And then some try to grow full-size tomato plants in a 2 or 3-gallon pot. Poor them... Unless you have an automated drip irrigation setup or some other sort of scheme to water those containers, there will be nothing but tomatoes with BER on them. I advise people to avoid wide swings in soil moisture. The goal should be to keep your soil moist without ever getting dry or waterlogged. Then, of course, there's always the "oh crap, my tomatoes are wilting!" Followed but the hose running for 3 hours solid. That's the perfect recipe for BER.

None of the science talks about ammonia based fertilizers causing it.

There's a youtube video by user Hoocho titled "How to grow Kratky hydroponic tomatoes." He grew 4 varieties, and one suffered end rot -- even though its roots were in water. This demonstrates that it's not strictly a watering issue, it seems. EDIT: The end rot issue is discussed around time 20:15

Hey Mr Man have to give you the big prop you hit it right on the head I found out that over watering my plants or water and doing the hottest points and not in the morning and evening that's what causes that rott so again you are absolutely right I just had to let you know I found that out the hard way thanks for your great info all the time 🙂

I know an older woman who used lime for her tomato plants for years had great results. Now she has plants that look like sticks because she ruined the soil Ph which is highly alkaline. I told her to stop adding lime but she is convinced she is not adding enough. I gave up talking to her.

I had it for the first time last year and your right it only happened to a few of my 1st tomatoes then was fine. I believe we had a really hot day (98 degrees) and I forgot to water. Have you heard the one about putting chalk in your soil yet for calcium?

should one water moderately every day or two, or heavy once or twice a week, I use a 3 ft watering wand in shower mode, with heavy mulch and probably dump over a gallon of water every three or four days or if hot dry and sunny every other day. I was told or read that its better to really soak the ground so the water gets to the deep roots. out of a hundred T plants i do get a few with blossom end rot

Why does overwatering cause blossom end rot and or low calcium levels in the plant? Thank you for the information!

I add Gypsum every year to my tomato garden in the ground. I use leaves as a mulch to prevent splash up when it rains. Is it wasteful to add gypsum yearly. I’m in Minnesota and have a dark black dirt soil. It’s not the bagged black dirt stuff. It’s the stuff that’s been building since the ice age.

As I remember some of the sheetrock in the U.S. is made in China. Seems like I remember a story about dangerous sheetrock from China. It may not be safe.

(3:03) "Make sure the soil is constantly moist." (3:15) "Only water when the soil is dry." Sounds like contrary instructions to me. If the soil is kept constantly moist, then it's never dry...
@Gardenfundamentals1
@Gardenfundamentals1 9 месяцев назад
I guess it comes down to the difference between moist and wet. The key is not to over water or under water.
