Thanks Steve, I just found your channel thanks to Kate and Eli. I have been growing tomatoes for 35 years here in Sacramento, Ca. I always grow cherry tomatoes ( sweet 100's or sweet millions) for salad use and I grow mid size Ace and Celebrity and Roma's for sauces and I like large slicers for sandwiches ( beefsteak etc) . I always try to grow a new-to-me variety every year and this year it is Cherry Roma and Kanner Hoel.
I love tomatoes, im growing 48 verities and over 100 plants this year, mostly indeterminate. i cant cant to have more fresh tomato. i have done them later too, for space reasons, and i dont need to have to worry about anything
Hi Steve thanks for the information on Bush tomatoes. I've been looking for some for 2yrs and finally found some from 'Real Seeds' called 'Grushova'. Described as, large egg shaped deep red toms with a pink skin. Its a non hybrid so i can save seed,. I'm pretty excited as I have limited space in my greenhouse so haven't been able grow in there. I'll keep you posted on how they do. Happy growing
Hi steve talking about tomatoes in all my years of growing tomatoes I have never known about determinate or non determinate ones I have just bought plants and grown now for last 3-4 years I have sown my own seeds but still havnt looked to see what they are bush or cordon. I just grow and they usually fine and tall and I pinch out the side shoots that’s it. Watching you and others I learning so much and yet I have been growing years I learned from my mum and dad they were self sufficient in fruit and veg. Mum also grew prize crysants in the greenhouse and as a child I would go round the houses with the flower basket selling them. We talking years ago now as I am 68. Anyway Thankyou for your advice and teaching. I used to buy Shirley plants for my dad when he couldn’t do much anymore and he grew them in a growbag in one of those little greenhouses and he had lovely big tomatoes. 👍🙋🏻
I showed my third sowing of tomatoes today… :) I was lucky to get some grow lights from Santa, and bought a heat mat to go with the lights, so have been trialling early sowings. I only do a few seeds of each variety at a time. I’m doing two beefsteaks, three cherries and two tumbling types.
I feel famous! We’re doing tomatoes on the same day! Teasing. Great video. Thanks. Tomato cages are a pain. I use them but never for supporting tomatoes. 👍❤️🇨🇦❤️👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Advice needed please Steve. I have a new greenhouse, never used one before. Its on concrete, so am I better using growbags for tomatoes cucumber and peppers, or would they do well in a shallow (6") raised bed? Thanks for your videos, I always learn something worthwhile. I'm in penrith, so similar weather conditions to you.
Hi Steve, I have a question for you, given you are such great teacher to us new gardeners. I sowed Tiny Tim tomatoes (bush) in January last year. I wanted to get some early season tomatoes. The planted fruited in June and continued to fruit through the year. As it was in a pot, I took it inside my house and I “dumped” it in a north facing window sill. In January I gave it a bit of love - fresh compost and put it next to my south facing patio doors. Before 14 February it was flowering again, and now it has around half a dozen of green tomatoes and loads of flowers. I know tomatoes are perennial plants in the tropics and I am in London and I get loads sun by my patio doors. Why I don’t understand is why the plant didn’t die, or stop producing, and even stranger why it flowered again. I am delighted but I would like to understand to be able to do it again. What could I achieve if I don’t “dump” the plant and Bath her with some grow lights. Thanks so much
Thanks Steve! I always learn something new when I watch your videos! I'm growing a new favourite for me, Akron. Nothing special but a jolly nice, quick growing salad tomato 🍅. Trying a few new ones, Amish Paste amongst them. I'm hoping for a good pasta sauce tomato.
I used to grow the Amish paste a few years back, lovely tomato with loads of flesh, but for me in my climate it was not as reliable as I would have liked, with 2 or 3 big fruits and the rest small on each plant. But it is cold here in comparison to other areas...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp Thanks Steve! Good heads up not to grow too many. I'm just up the road on the Solway but maybe in my south facing greenhouse it will surprise.
@@UpthePottingShed Everything is worth a try, it builds your experience for future years. Let me know later how you got on with them as I will be intrested...Steve...🙂
What is cause of tough shins on Tomatoes nowadays, been growing Tomatoes for more years that i can remember, even when we buy them from the Supermarket the skins are tough.
They will be potted on and moved to my heated propagator bench in the greenhouse, I am in a cool part of the UK so I have to provide protection right through till planting time...Steve...🙂
I was just thinking should I sow my tomatoes yet or is it to earlier lol perfect timing, I'm thinking should I start would mean I would have no heat for them? 🤔
Its a difficult one to answer that is Mark as everyones situation is completely different, use previous years experience to judge if you can...Steve...🙂
Hi could you show how you water seedlings when they're in the super 7 tray growing. 1st time using a super 7. It says to take the trays out of the unit to water them, which I did but I've lost all my seedlings - under or over watering? Don't know what I've donecto thrm
HI Martin, I have never grown them before but my pack of seeds says Determinate, I have sent out a question to someone whom I know has rown them before to clarify and will report back here when I have an answer...Steve...🙂
I was wondering where Steve got determinate seeds for black trifele- they are my absolutely favourite, but the ones i have are indeterminate as well. Would love some determinate ones as they just take less space :)
Hi Steve - Do you bottom water while they are sitting in the Super7? My Super7 instructions specifically say you shouldn't get the unit wet - but it's a real pain having to take the seed trays out every time you want to water. Just wondering how you do it...?
Hi Steve, nice to hear your doing some trials with your tomatoes this year. After watching a lot of commercial tomato grower videos over winter I’m going to grow half of my tomatoes using the dual leader method as space is always at a premium this time of year when your trying to keep the frosts off your tender plants and this should leave me some space to start off some melons and water melons. Have you ever tried this method.
@@phillipb6547 Hi Phillip, I have ried it a couple of times and it has never quite worked for me, but I am quite far north in the UK with a much shorter season than many. I always encourage testing so have a go and do let me know later in the season how you got on with it...Steve...🙂
Yes I do Kevin, obviously I dont splash water everywhere I am very careful, but the little sunken area where the trays sit is a sealed area, just check that yours is too...Steve...🙂
