Loved your Tutorial...it inspired me to try and make my own tombstone. Your painting techniques were very helpful, and it's great that I don't need a lot of tools, just a penknife and an airbrush! The devil is in the details, though, and your carvings are just superb. Thanks so much for this, it gives me hope that maybe with LOTS of practice someday I can do this too!

Amazing detail and thank you for taking the time to show us every step! Gets annoying when magically the step is finished. I started my own stones last year and this has given me more knowledge to go further! I was afraid at first to use spray paint but this has given me confidence. I usually get a small paint brush of Acetone and flick it on the stone for more deep divots. Love this!! Now to watch the more in depth carving, thank you!!!!

Although this was published 2 years ago it is a great two part video to watch in order to gain ideas on your own tombstones and how to age them and basically get the authentic look. Great job!

These have all been being used outdoors. They have held up well over the years and without any type of sealing.as for mounting them, i just bore a hole up thru the bottom of the foam and mount them on a section of PVC. I covered a bit on how it was done in one of my more recent Vlogs.

Very helpful video--thank you! A couple questions if you don't mind--are these meant to be used indoors or outdoors? I don't see how you stand them up, and if they are to be used outdoors, how well do they withstand the weather without being sealed with something?

I am also interested in knowing what kind of airbrush system you use - I want to buy one but don't know if the cheap ones will suffice or if I should invest in a more expensive one. Could you please tell us what you use?

So what kind of air brush system are you using that can work with that thick craft paint? Is the paint thinned down first?
@swgrinder1

Amazing you have so much talent. I was surprised that when you sprayed the lighter gray, you did not loose the dark in the lettering. A couple questions if you do not mind. I know you are looking for a realistic font, is the font you used Times New Roman? Is your sprayer an inexpensive one? I have things on my plate for this year, but might try this over the winter. Being unemployed my funds are VERY limited and hope to give this a try. Congrats, I am so amazed on your talent...

What do you seal the tombstone with before you put it outside? Drylok? Polyurethane?

Great tutorial! I've been working based of a number of RU-vid tutorials and where I'm at is I've weathered the tombstones, painted the lettering and cracks black and completed the overall coat painting with DryLock, which may be more light grey that what you're suggesting. They look great so far, but my question is can I now go back with a darker grey and do your application somewhat in reverse, either or both with brush, airbrush and or drip/tea stain? Hope for a reply and thanks. BP

I Have made a few homemade tombstones before but your tips will really bring what I have done in the past to realty. Have you ever added the fake moss in addition to the fake grass? I also wonder what type of air brush system you use? I have always dry-brushed mine by hand but would like the option of an air-brush. Your work is fantastic and I hope you continue to post tutorials! Thank You and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Hey, great tutorial, but I have a question. I'm planning on getting a similar air brush that you are using for my Halloween prop projects. I think you said you just use regular acrylic paint. If so, do you thin it before you put it in or just straight from the bottle. If so what do you thin it with?

Instead of using black acrylic paint first could you skip to using grey drylock and than accent the grey with a lighter paint?
@pjadolf

Thanks for posting this! It was extremely helpful! I have an airbrush question - when using craft acrylic paints, do you dilute the paints? If so, how much and with what? They seem really thick to use in an airbrush.
@SKAustin
@SKAustin 9 лет назад
I thin them with water and Flow-aid, there are several options available, and a few videos for home-made air brush thinners for acrylics. In this particular project, i only used water to thin them to the consistency of milk.

@SKAustin

Woodland scenics grasses (turf). I used to do model miniatures and had a large amount of left over turf colors. I just mixed a few different colors and sprinkled it on.

Loved your video but I tried eBay for the grass to do the moss effect but I couldn't find any. Do you have any suggestions as to where I can find some? Thanks
@SKAustin
@SKAustin 9 лет назад
I use Woodland Scenics turfs. There are a variety of colors and sizes. I found the best results by mixing a few different colors of coarse and fine turfs. You can get them on amazon, most craft and hobby stores, and any model railroading shops.

I know they are your tombstones, but the sprayed second coat(gray) kills the contrast of a black undercoat. A dryish roller or paintbrush will paint the surface and leave the black detail of the carved area. The black letters aren't there.

Will liquid nails accomplish the same result as the urethane adhesive?
@SKAustin
@SKAustin 8 лет назад
+Steven Hulbert Liquid Nails is not foam safe and will eat into foam. That said, the paint should provide a level of protection from the liquid nails and hopefully prevent this. Liquid nails is also not clear like the Liquid Fusion so any spots not covered by the "moss" will be visible. And finally, I cannot comment as to the waterproof qualities of liquid nails, but the urethane glue is 100% waterproof once dry. Liquid Fusion is pretty inexpensive, so I'd recommend it if you can get it, but the liquid nails might work. I'd test it out first to see how it holds up to the weather.

Urethane Glue..looks intresting for doing moss on tombstones..where do you pick that up i wonder? ive only done hot glue on tombstones with moss..but if i could do this..i think it would save me time, i also need hot glue for skulls on my fence so i really could use this type of glue you are using

FordFalcon1962nBlue Liquid Fusion (Urethane glue) is available right at Michael's in the aisle with the rest of the glues and adhesives. You can probably also find it at AC Moore or Hobby Lobby as well.
