As a teenager in the 80s I bought an LP of Tommy James & The Shondells Greatest Hits, mainly for the one song, Mony Mony, and ended up finding I enjoyed every song on the record, and still do.
Same here. I got the same Roulette Greatest Hits record, only I wanted Crimson and Clover because I'd heard it a lot as a kid. Turned out that I liked every song on there, too. Tommy just didn't get his due.
They played at our homecoming in1967, Miami Florida, rocked the place down, TJ still has it al going on. Love this song especially. Sugar on Sunday cause if not I'm leavin on Monday, babe, YEA!
@@oldiesgeek454 I last saw him maybe 15 years ago at St. Cloud State University, together with Bobby Vee doing a fund raiser for Cathedral HS in St. Cloud. Tommy was better than ever then. He's going to turn 73 on April 29th. Amazing that he is still performing. How did he sound last June.
This is a masterfully produced remote recording using direct injection guitars and keyboards in case the live performance instrument had to be used during post (and as a guide track for the studio drop ins). The kick drum is triggered to a sampler, and the well shielded kit (cymbals lowered behind the plexiglass) features barely noticeable remnants of the live kit (except that slightly doubled snare sound and the off and on use of live toms Tommy's vocal is a blending of both live and overdubbed "effected" vocals made possible by using that hyper directional vocal mic which picked up only directly in dead center and up close. By adding a well tuned gate the remote truck engineer was able to reject most everything else from the peripheral stage audio. I doubt any background vocals are used here. In summary, Tommy James has and always will place technical excellence in it's rightful perspective in the creative process. Masterfully produced and superior effort. I am in awe
Yeah, but why does it take 15 minutes to cook minute rice? You can still hear Tommy singing after his lips stop moving...0:32 - at 0:34 you hear "time" but he closes his mouth for the last part of it. Saw him a few years ago at the American Music Theater, amazing!
I heard a trivia question on the radio not too long ago that said Tommy James and the Shondells had more top ten hits (might have been top 40 hits), in the 60's than any other American band.
191,000 views and ONLY 894 likes? WTF!? This is another one of those songs that when you look back on all the sh*t that was released as singles and made the top 10, why wasn't a gem like this even in the top 40?
I've always loved this song (the Clique cover is okay)... Tommy James is from back when singers could actually sing--live, in front of an audience without autotune, sound tricks...
Oh, the night is slipping away, femme jolie, femme jolie And there's still so much left to say, femme jolie, femme jolie But we haven't got time, 'cause I'll be gone in the sunshine. Oh my love, you've been good to me, femme jolie, femme jolie I could love you so easily, femme jolie, femme jolie But what can I do now? And I'm tellin' you now. I'm only sugar on Sunday, I'm leavin' on Monday, Only got one day to love me, yeah. I'm Sugar on Sunday, I'm leavin' on Monday, But I'll be your man, tonight. And the night is never to wait, femme jolie, femme jolie Love me now, before it's too late, femme jolie, femme jolie But we haven't got time, and I'll be gone in the sunshine. I'm only sugar on Sunday, I'm leavin' on Monday, Only got one day to love me, yeah. I'm Sugar on Sunday, I'm leavin' on Monday, But I'll be your man ..... Oh, sugar on Sunday, I'm leavin' on Monday, Only got one day to love me, yeah. Sugar on Sunday, I'm leavin' on Monday, I've only got one day to love me, yeah. I'm sugar on Sunday, I'm leavin' on Monday, Only got one day to love me, yeah. Sugar on Sunday, I'm leavin' on Monday, But I'll be your man ..... tonight.
Thanks for reminding me to look up the lyrics. I've had the record since the fall of 1969, and only now do I know it as "femme jolie". I did take French and they're both (Tommy James and Clique) mispronouncing "femme". The French pronunciation is "fom" with a nasal, not "fem". The words mean: beautiful woman.
Folks if you want to hear the HIT version of this great tune, written by Tommy James, please google the CLIQUE FROM HUSTON. It was their version with the Great Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kay on bass and the beautiful singing style of Randy Shaw, from the CLIQUE FROM HUSTON, that took this tune high on the charts!!! From very inside sources, Tommy resented them for making this a hit when his version was no where near the success!!!
Oh the night Is slipping away Femme jolie, femme jolie And there's still so much left to say Femme jolie, femme jolie Oh we haven't got time 'Cause I'll be gone in the sunshine Oh my love You've been good to me Femme jolie, femme jolie I could love you so easily Femme jolie, femme jolie Oh what can I do now? Since I left you now I've only Sugar on Sunday I'm leavin' on Monday Only got one day to love me, yeah Sugar on Sunday I'm leavin' on Monday I need to know Tonight
I may be wrong but I think what they did back then was have the group play live to the audience but pipe in the record for the TV audience. So it's not really lip syncing but doesn't always line up. The sad part was, is that the live audience got a naked version which many times was nicer than the finished record.
1979-1115, Anjonee, Korea, SUGAR ON SUNDAY VD ON MONDAY. This Information on the song SUGAR ON SUNDAY I learned by listening to Casey Kasem on the Armed Forces Radio in 1979. Casey gave the complete details to this song. I was stationed @ Camp Humphries, Korea for a year. Everybody was talking about this song in ANJONEE. I do believe there are other versions recorded. The Real Sugar on Sunday. Tommy James was drafted into the Army in 1972, during the Vietnam War. He was stationed @ Camp Humphries Korea, USAFSK. He often visited the Village outside the Camp Humphries gate named Anjonee, Korea. When Tommy returned to the US, he wrote the song Sugar on Sunday, by Tommy James & the Shondels. I have written Mr. James twice for information but was told he is now an antiwar activist & refuses to acknowledge his time in the Army. Written by Tommy James / M. Vale, The Clique. This is the version played in the clubs in Korea, every night the JDs would announce over the loudspeakers “This Anjonee song, this Anjonee song! SUGAR ON SUNDAY VD ON MONDAY Oh the night Is slipping away Anjonee, Anjonee (the Ville outside Camp Humphries) & there's still so much left to say Anjonee, Anjonee Oh, we haven't got time for a short-time 'Cause I'll be gone in the sunshine Oh my love You've been good to me Anjonee, Anjonee I could love you so easily Anjonee, Anjonee Oh, what can I do now? Since I left you now I've only Sugar on Sunday I got VD on Monday Only got one day to love me, yeah Sugar on Sunday VD on Monday I need to know Tonight & the night is never to wait Anjonee, Anjonee Love me now before it's too late Anjonee, Anjonee Oh, we haven't got time I'll be gone in the sunshine I've only Sugar on Sunday VD Monday Only got one day to love me, yeah Sugar on Sunday I'm leavin' on Monday I need to know Oh, Sugar on Sunday I'm leavin' on Monday Only got one day to love me, yeah Sugar on Sunday VD on Monday Only got one day to love me, yeah Sugar on Sunday I'm leavin' on Monday Only got one day to love me, yeah Sugar on Sunday VD on Monday Only got one day to love me, yeah Sugar on. The original version of this song by Tommy James & The Shondels sounds more like Anjonee Anjonee newer versions sound like, femme Jolie, femme Jolie. James is a well-known Christian pacifist & has worked on keeping his lustful time in Korea secret. These are the original words as sung on the 33-RPM records played every night in the Korean Bars in Anjonee, Korea, outside Camp Humphries in 1979 Author’sNote, I was in Korea in 1979 for two years & returned in 1998 for another two. The Name of the town outside Camp Humphries changed over the years from Anjonee to Anjuree. Korea used to have a much harsher language. Since the mid-1980s, Koreans have softened the language & many of the youth have a Korean, “valley girl,” singsong accent. Pusan became Busan etc… When young Korean adults talk to Americans the Koreans, use proper English with no slang or vulgarity. I noticed the opposite custom while in Hanau, Germany. When young German adults talk to Americans, the Germans try & use what they call, “real-English,” the Germans pepper their conversation with slang & vulgarities. German English is like inner city English. Many of the Germans I met had a British accent when speaking English because most of the English teachers in Germany are from the UK. Koreans come across as very polite in normal conversation. Germans come across as people who use awkward outdated slang when talking to Americans. Koreans were very polite I had more fun in Korea than I did in Germany. One custom in Korea that made Korean men angry was the willingness of ordinary Korean women trade sex for English lessons. These were lonely women, many married to Korean men who just wanted to hang out with cool American Soldiers & practice English between wild sessions of sex with American men with big American penis.
tommy was singing Femme Jolie" like buddy novinski was saying tommy was misprounouncing femme jolie so i think you hear it as venga Lee. listen try to hear the way femme jolie u mite get it ! its a great song!
GMA 617 you are right about the 3:31 mark. He definitely is pulling away from the mic but his voice does not tail off. Tommy a lip syncer ?? Who cares- we love him.
Just before seeing your note I saw the drummer's headset. Now we know the reason. I think I don't mind. It's not another voice a/la Milli Vanilli. It's Tommy James. I do wonder whether the rest of the harmonies - absolutely spot on and beautiful - are also recorded.
I'm not as sure that it's a lip syn. It doesn't sound like the record, slower, missing the harpsichord, they don't fade out, etc. And it is at the Bitter End. But it could have been re-recorded before the concert.
I agree, and I've had the record since the fall of 1969. As much as I've liked Tommy James (and still do) since 1969, i think this version is too slow.
I know this one is a decade plus old now but I like how he brought his songs into the modern era . Maybe threats from goombahs have kept Tommy out of the RocknRoll Hall of Fame but I will just chalk it up to Board douchebagness . Hell they let Lovin Spoonful in and for my money Tommy James is better than John Sebastian and did John Sebastian inspire any part of the Sopranos .
u cant compare to lady gaga...........its a different time......record distribution, contracts and computers...........to bad.. but they're still great.......
Tommy james And the cliques version Are both great...but! I've gotta say, The clique's Version is alott more ass Kicking and solid sounding Especially with the drummers Tight drum beat and the slight Funky bass groove pushing Throughout the song as well Plus, the singer was More ballsier in the vocals Dept Tommy James version was nice, but it was too late back For my taste Almost at a slow yawning Pace.... And that's where tommy seriously Held this song from bieng a #1 hit For him Just my opnion JesseRock
Can someone please tell me who the drummer is???? So freaky ... he looks like a fiend of mine. could have been twins. So weird. Let me know if anyone knows anything about this drummer and his name??
