You everage person can't even grasp the acting/climbing ability in the reenactments of this video, much less the actual climb.

I dunno how but after what Joe went through and for him to be able to climb again, that's one determined fellow. I suppose it's that determination that saved his life. Respect.

There is so much similarity between Joe and Toni and one could not stop thinking about whether Toni's soul was reincarnated as Joe to relive the same ordeal in order to close this chapter in his life.

You're absolutely right! Only a person who's done serious climbing and therefore have lived through desparate situations and accidents of this scale as presented in the film, can genuinely talk about it.

Men as hard as steel with balls the size of church bells,yet not for the sake of vanity or ego.A stark lesson in owning your life and accepting responsiblitiy for ones own actions,without expectation of outcome,sadly massively lacking in these times of instant gratification and self endorsement:-( R.I.P. George Herbert Leigh Mallory,in my mind,you were the first,despite Hillary who had local assistance;-)and i'm pretty damn sure Kurz and Hinterstiosser would back you up on that.

Joe Simpson is one of the baddest dudes to ever walk this planet. He is in contest with an elderly Alaskan man named Gene Moe. Gene killed an Alaskan brown bear in one on one combat, and then walked himself to safety out of the forrest. As a senior citizen. Hard as Iron.

Just as a thought experiment, I’m thinking of how Kurtz could’ve gotten down with only one good arm. Twisting his body against the lay of the rope enough times to separate the strands enough to slip a biner through the rope above him? That would mean spinning around hundreds of times and would really suck. Then twirl the other way to wind up the strands? Then, untie the knot and tie the new rope to the biner just mentioned. Hook up to the new rope and unhook the first rope. Continue descending 🤷‍♂️ I was thinking “Alpine Butterfly” but I don’t see how he could’ve tied it under tension, and with only one arm. Just realized, they probably didn’t have gated carabiners then so my first plan wouldn’t work, unless ya just used a loop of rope instead of the biner. Just forget the carabiner and wrap the rope around your torso...old school. RIP to all those guys. Much respect!

Szia! Keresek egy filmet! Régen láttam nem emlékszem a címére. Talán a Mount Everesten játszódik! Csak annyi maradt meg hogy fiatalok másznak egy tapasztaltabb hegymászóval. Belezuhannak egy jéghasadékba a vezető elmondja a tibeti om pademe humot háromszor és levágja magát a kötélről hogy segítsen a felette levőknek! Egyébként ott találja meg a rég eltünt barátnőjét a hasadékban megfagyva. A feltöltést köszönöm! Épp az előbb töprengtem a megoldáson! Mármint a végén az Eigeren! Hihetelen hogy ott halt meg, egy lépésre a megmeneküléstől! Itt ülok a meleg szobában. Így persze könnyű! A megoldásom megvan! Azonban ez nem segít rajta!

Just grab the replies manually, pop ‘em into a Google Doc, translate it. Language isn’t really a barrier online anymore buddy! In real life, this challenge exists. Online you can get to within appreciable meaning of the worlds languages with machine translation.

Egy "pruszikkal" megoldható lett volna. Alsó kötél felhúz megbont (pruszik) . Tudom innen könnyű okoskodni! Nem tudom 1936-ban milyen kötéltechnikák voltak, és milyen állapotban volt Kurz? Sajnálom!

Elviekben a pruszikot már ismerhették, kérdés hogy tényleg ismerték-e, vagy hogy az értékrendjük nem tekintette-e bármilyen okból "csalásnak", ezt nem tudhatjuk. Amúgy olvasd el a videó leírásában azt a szöveg részletet, ha még nem tetted volna...

I think under the circumstances they hadn't any other option but to tie two (or more?) ropes together to make it long enough for the rappel. Skilled climbers in good strength can bypass such knots with a prusik for instance, if they see it in time before it jams into their device or carabiner, but Kurz either didn't see it in time, and/or didn't have the strength and tools to bypass it. Incredibly unfortunate situation...

@@Morendati I understand your point but I know other ways to tie 2 ropes conforming a flat knot used for marine purposess. They tied the most primitive bulky knot I know I was really surprised.

Ueli Steck (és Dani Arnold is egyszer) valóban bőven három órán belül mászta meg többször is a falat, ami kétségtelen hogy szenzációs teljesítmény. Azt azonban fontos tudni, hogy Steck úgy készült az Eiger-mászásokra, mint egy élsportoló az Olimpiára, tudatosan és módszeresen edzve a feladatra, ráadásul mára az Eiger északi falának szinte minden méterét ismerni lehet, minden részletről az évtizedek során van valamelyik mászónak a múltból beszámolója és/vagy fényképe, és az időjárás előrejelzés is kategóriákkal pontosabb manapság, mint a huszadik század első felében volt. És végül ott van a felszerelés kérdése. Steck olyan fejlett bakancsokkal, hágóvasakkal és legfőképp speciális jégcsákányokkal mászott, amelyekkel nem csupán a havas és jeges szakaszokon tudott sokkal könnyebben és biztonságosabban mászni, mint Kurz és társai, hanem ezekkel az eszközökkel mászta meg magát a sziklát is. A négy végtagjával és az "acél karmaival" gyakorlatilag felszaladt a hegyoldalon. Fizikailag és pszichikailag kétségtelenül kivételes teljesítmény, de ahogy azt manapság szokták mondani, nem ugyanabban a ligában játszott, mint Kurz és társai. És valóban, Stecket végül csak elérte végzete egy olyan hegyen - a Lhocén -, amelyet annyira nem ismert jól, mint az Eigert. Az végső ütőkártyát - ahogyan azt Eric Shipton írta még a harmincas években - mindig is a hegy fogja a kezében tartani, csak az a kérdés, hogy kijátssza-e vagy sem...
