@dfss csss I beg to differ. Joe has had people like Sam Harris on and they are quite close especially on their views on religion. He was also a close friend of Christopher Hitchens, a man I'd see on the podcast above all others. Would be interesting to listen to Steve's experiences with Christopher and his life.

Just his extensive knowledge of writers and philosophers and how that influences his work is amazing. Then the paintings. I had no idea he was such a brilliant guy.

I've been following Derren Brown's brilliant work for years, if you're not hip, definitely go down the rabbit hole and check out some of his stuff. "The Heist" is one of my absolute favorites
The edge or whatever the one where they got people to push someone off a building was absolute rubbish. I call complete bullshit. No one is killing someone just because a group of people tell them some ridiculous story plus a bunch of subliminal messaging.
E. Bayford I have no idea which special of his you’re talking about but it sounds funny. Keep in mind part of what Derren does is make you think certain “tricks” are done certain ways, like through suggestion, when they are actually just variations on real illusions that most stage magicians can do.
Enjoyed this entire podcast so much! Derren Brown is one of my most favourite people. I've read all of his books and watched all of his shows and I truly believe he is one of the most kindest and wisest people on the planet.

Enjoyed it. I don't think Rogan fully know / appreciate who he was talking to, to the extend I hoped him to. Sure this is not the first mentalist he had on the cast but Darren is a whole different creature.
+dfss csss Tom Cruise being a total nutcase is exactly what would make him an interesting guest. His handlers (Scientology) would never allow it, but his stunt work is all done by him and would be interesting to talk about.
Always admired how genuine Derren is. What's stood out about his shows over traditional magic is his willingness to be blatant about the fact that this is a trick, it's not magic or of higher power and yet it's still amazing.
He seems to tarnish Darren with the generic magician brush, especially at the start. Joe would be amazed if he watched his shows, because no one isn't.
Merc Swazey 100% Disagree. He saw Derren’s stuff. He was prepared and knows who and what he is. This interview was about getting into the psyche of Derren and how he feels. The man behind the persona. The real Derren, not the charismatic magician and master of suggestion. Just his process. If you find this boring, maybe you need a Derren Brown adventure to wake you up to how good this interview is.
Derren mentioned his special, Apocalypse. I paused this podcast to watch it real quick (you can find it on youtube, in his channel, two parts), and holy shit! I ended up cry laughing at the end. It's such an amazing emotional rollercoaster of an experience watching Apocalypse. I highly recommend watching it
If I would have to choose one show as my "all time favourite Derren Brown show" it would have to be his live show "Enigma". If you haven't seen it then I 100% recommend it and I 100% guarantee the ending will blow your mind!
Once you understand he simply uses actors (i.e. the 'unsuspecting subjects') for his specials they lose a lot of their appeal. His stage shows are absolutely phenomenal though
Espically when he made a guy stamp on 19/20 styrophoam cups on the floor when 1 had a knife underneath. He even made him to it barefoot like jigsaw dose with his victims.

Watched this podcast... at some point I fell asleep, then woke up wearing a chicken suit, covered in chocolate pudding, and Derren’s Netflix special had been playing on repeat for hours... I’m assuming this happened to everyone else?
If you haven't heard of this chap before now, i'd urge you to look up some his previous endeavors. The bloke is absolutely gobsmacking and im not sure how well known he is across the pond.

I was a fan maybe 10 years ago after finding some of his stuff online. but we didn't get much from him until lately when Netflix nabbed up some of his specials.
I'm SO glad Derren is getting this platform thank you Joe! He is imo the best mentalist I've seen to date. What separates him from the rest, is that he doesn't cheat or use stooges, and he also tells you roughly how he was able to pull of the trick. I'm in my 40's and have never seen a magician /mentalist this good. I EMPLORE you Americans to go watch his stuff. He leaves David Blane behind. And no trickery!
I would love to see Chris Morris on the show, he created some of the best (my favourite for sure) British comedies of all time, i imagine he would have some amazing stories.
Have seen Derren Brown live and admired him for a long time but I still found this surprisingly insightful and crazy interesting. One of my favourites ever.

I ran into Derren Brown on RU-vid years ago. He’s a fantastic entertainer. If people watching this have not seen his shows do yourself a favor and binge them. They are incredible.
Al Santos check out his earlier work. I used to watch him as a teen with my friend and I thought he was mesmerizing back then, now he’s just reaffirming it for me. The man is something else.
I'm a huge Derren fan. This is by far the most interesting interview i've ever seen him do; I got more insight into Derren's personality from just this interview, than the 18 years I've been watching him
I've been fortunate enough to see Derren Brown a few times. He's such a good showman. If you ever get the chance to see him then I highly recommend it.

I could listen to Derren talk all day. So insightful. Read his book, Tricks of the Mind. Some of the anecdotes he gives, exist there, in more detail. One of my favourite books.

Once I'd gotten into a drunken street brawl, trying to break up everyone from fighting. One person knocked my glasses off when he jumped on my back and put me in a choke. I calmly grabbed his wrists, pulled his arms off, turned around and asked him if he could help find my glasses, to which he was confused, then started backing away while yelling that I should get away from him. Hearing Derren tell his story about deflating a situation with a drunk person, my situation back then, now makes a lot more sense to me.

Apocalypse was my favourite! Not just for the incredible backstory but the "victims" experience was incredibly emotional to watch. I cried at several points, it was remarkable

Meh. His stage shows are far superior. I'm not into his tv specials, like apocalypse or heist, they're a bit gimmicky. Still watch them, just didn't get the excitement I do from the stage shows... Speaking of, Svengali was my favourite.

Joe rogan had a great chat with Derren Brown but I couldn’t help thinking he knew nothing about him. I know he can’t research all his guests but he would have got so much more out of this if he knew the depths Derren Brown has debunked pseudoscience.

But I don't think Rogan would do it on purpose, cause at some point Derren asks "Can I talk about Sacrifice?" and Joe goes "You can talk about anything you want". My conspiracy theory is that Derren was trying to make us suggestible to watch his shows, by constantly adding them in the middle of his stories. Which he kind of explained the process of before. Which I think is brilliant if it's true, and not just a shameless constant plug.
Joe has had some mehh podcasts in the past where he is a bit cold/confrontational, or just doesn't let the other person finish all their stories and stuff, but lately he has really been on point (and pretty hilarious too actually). GO JOE

It's because he wants the guest to feel comfortable in explaining what naturally comes first instead of it all being scripted. ..plus Joe does sometimes 3 podcast a day so that would definitely get hard to remember everyone's story plus it would have a scripted feeling instead of free flowing
@isitwrongtoeat sand. I think you gotta cut some slack for the fact that Derren isn't very big in the USA. Some of Joe's questions indicated that he'd watched a couple of Derren's specials. He'd made some effort.
Why. Anything he has to say he can say there. We didn't do the research either. Let's talk, let's have a fun conversation that we don't know where it'll go. He's not the Queen, he doesn't need a red carpet and a formal interview. That style of interview went away and for good reason: it fucked sucked and was soul sucking.
At around 1:08:52 Derren tells a story from the book The Spell of the Sensuous by David Abram. This really is an amazing, deeply insightful book. I would love to see Abram in conversation with Joe Rogan. To hear him mentioned by Derren was a great surprise, since although David Abram is an accomplished speaker and writer, I hardly ever hear him being talked about, so please, please consider inviting him on the podcast.
@cassl14 convenience. You don't have to mess with any toilet lids. Plus It's easier to aim - especially if you're hard or if you've been having sex all night and you've got four different pee streams going in all different directions.
I've spent many hours in group therapy where people got hung up on radical acceptance and it's complacency-like component. Joe and Darren explained why they are not the same thing in a few minutes. I could have saved us all hours of suffering through it by showing them a 10 minute clip.

So surprised to see Derren on, i just got his new book in the mail. I feel there were so many other things they could have talked about and gone deeper into the mind of Derren, such an intelligent person and someone as competent as Joe asking the questions - i feel Joe should have watched his shows and did some more homework before he came on. Damn. Bring him back please!!!
His book 'Happy' is an amazing read. The title and cover playfully hide it's complex, sometimes painfully honest, content about life. Lots of philosophy gems in there.

This guy is a national treasure here in the UK. Hugely talented and now often impersonated. Great choice of guest (the diversity of the guests keeps bringing me back to this channel).
