I didn't plan on doing this song because of the quality of it on my CD.
It was overdriven (over compressed) and had no stereo imaging. But I had a lot of requests for it so I took 12 hours to work on it. This was an incredibly challenged song to enhance. Parts of it reminded me of the song "We Two" by the Little River Band and other parts like "Turn, Turn, Turn" by the birds--at least how I modeled the lead guitar parts
on reach channel for stereo separation. I don't know that I did anything great on this one and I''ll be surprised if anyone even likes it.
So for those who asked for it I hope you get something out of it!

One of my all-time favorite songs. R.I.P. Eric Carmen, whose vocal here has "rock star" stamped over every millisecond. Extreme talent. And this audio sounds great!

I just love this remix. Tonight should have been a number one hit for the Raspberries back in 1973 instead only peaking at number 68.

One of the only four songs of my life that I loved so much that even at my age I can recall precisely where I was and what I was doing at the time I first heard it come over the airwaves of the transistor radio I carried everywhere with me as a kid.First was Ticket To Ride by The Beatles,then Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale,then No Matter What by Badfinger,and finally Tonight by The Raspberries. I was blown away by these songs in my pre-teens. They're all still favorites I could listen to till my ears bleed.

On this day in 1973 {September 29th} the Raspberries performed "Tonight" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... At the time "Tonight" was at #69 on Billboard's Top 100, that was also it's peak position on the chart, and it spent 7 weeks on the Top 100... It peaked at #80 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart... Between 1972 and 1974 the Cleveland group had seven records on the Top 100, one made the Top 10, "Go All The Way", it peaked at #5 {for 2 weeks} on October 1st, 1972... They had two Top 20 records, "I Wanna Be With You" {#16 in 1973} and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)" {#18 in 1974}... Lead singer Eric Carmen, as a solo artist, charted eight times on the Top 100 with his biggest hit being "All By Myself", it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} in 1976...

Eric, Wally, Dave, Jim - The Equivalent of The Beatles. I always refer to them as The American Beatles. Every one could sing & play marvelous. Wally Bryson one of the GREATEST Lead Guitarist, Jim Bonfanti on Drums Fantastic. Dave Smaller Bass & Vocals WOW? Like Roger McGuinn gives a Country Blend to Band & Eric ( The Voice) keyboards master & rocking guitar like McCartney. Also Honor able Mention to Scott McCarl & Michael McBride who replaced Dave & Jim on the final LP& Tour Starting Over. Scott has released Play On ( 2022) An LP & CD with Choice Cuts from his 1998 LP of the same name. Glad he has done this.

Great job! And thank you for putting in the work on this. I can hear some rhythm guitar parts in this mix that were buried in the original. Not that the original was bad, although it was / is very in your face, but this is a great mix. Of a great rock track, that should have gotten more airplay in the US.

I'd like to redo this one a lot better. The original has so much compression it borders on ridiculous and lacks in other areas of dynamics and stereo imaging. I will take another crack at it someday to get it right. Kenn

Great job - maybe I am mistaken but is this a tiny bit slower than the original ? Certainly on my vinyl copy it would seem so by comparison.

Great job considering the source. Most of their songs are way over compressed & distorted so hard to work with. Rog

You do really great work. This is one of my favorite songs ever and unfortunately it is one of the worst sounding records. As you mentioned, no stereo image, beyond compressed.....rough. You can actually hear piano and hand claps or something in this. Nice job considering what you had to work with.

Yeah the whole Side 3 album is like that unforunetly . I'm not sure what Jimmy Ienner was thinking when he produced the original .

How do you remix these original recordings? Do you have access to the master tapes? You would have to have the 3" reels and at least a 24 track mixing console plus all the needed effects processor's midiverbs noise gates etc
@cinematic35

I know it may sound like I have access to the original audio tapes but I don't. I use a Yamaha 1602 (16) track mixing console given to me by a friend. I bought a Sterling Pro Studio Microphone. The process goes something like this.(1)I start out with a clean digital audio file from a CD and do a RESTORATION from that MAGIX AUDIO CLEANING LAB (adjusting the 3 band compression/ dynamics, EQ & brightness settings. (2). Then I move that file over the MAGIX AUDIO STUDIO 7 (multitrack program) on my HP computer and place it as track 1 or the MAINFRAME TRACK. The microphone is plugged into the sound mixer and fed into the back of the computer by aux in audio channel so it can be picked up by the multitrack program. (3) Then comes the critical task of deciding what instruments, percussion, vocals and keyboard might be needed to enhance the original. This is most critical job of all. There is no manual on doing this. You either know what you are doing or you do not. The TECHNIQUES change from song to song/artist to artist which is a real challenge. It helps first if you are a musician of some sort and have a working knowledge of the genre of music you are working on I do best with the songs of the era I grew up with 60's 70's era. So to answer your question directly--the addition of any instrument, percussion or vocals you hear that were not in the original were added by me by strategically placing audio tracks on top of the original on both channels and mixing them down to make a better stereo version. Every song must be approached differently with a different set of rules. Enhancements are best recognized and appreciated on songs that were only recorded in mono or poorly recorded in stereo. It is paramount that you understand the MINDSET of the artist so as not to destroy the original. Not everyone agrees on this. Some people don't want anyone messing with the originals and others love it when I do it .More like it than don't. Hope this helps. Kenn

Jims drumming never got the treatment it needed on their albums . By that time recordings were so much better than what was put on vinyl by Ienner . He could have done a lot better bringing out the voices , drums and basslines .
