Tony Benn v Hilary Benn on war votes - BBC News

Father and son, Tony and Hilary Benn have given two of the most impassioned speeches on the issue of whether to vote for military action. In 1998 Tony Benn argued against the bombing of Iraq, while this week his son Hilary Benn argued in favour bombing Syria. Both speeches were widely praised - and both men, coincidentally, had current Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn sitting by them in the Commons as they were delivered.

Over simplification. Tony argued against *starting* a war in Iraq which had no UN support. Hilary argued for intervention in an *already raging* war. Intervention which had UN support and the had been requested by the Iraqi government. Totally different. We stood by in shameful indifference when the Hutus butchered the Tutsi in 1994. Hilary Benn was trying to protect the Yazidi and the Kurds from a similar fate. Doing nothing in Iraq *was* the peaceful choice. Doing nothing in Syria *was not* the peaceful choice for the war would have continued regardless.

@stephenholmes4344
@stephenholmes4344 3 года назад
He could have quoted his speech in *support* of airstrikes. Tony Benn spoke about the UN charter and it’s importance in maintaining international law and human rights . The UN did NOT mandate a bombing of Iraq so Tony was against it. But the UN was in favour of strikes in Syria to protect the people from possible genocide of IS. I was against the war in Iraq but for airstrikes in Syria. And I make no apology for my inconsistent language. There was no war in Iraq in 1998 or 2003 so Tony Benn was arguing against war. But Hilary Benn was arguing for air strikes, not for war. Regardless of whether the air strikes were launched there were thousands of Syrians dying at the hands of IS. The war was a fact regardless of the air strikes. So Hilary Benn was not pro war, the war was already a reality. He was pro air strikes because he was following in the tradition of his fathers reverence towards the UN charter.

Hilary Benn's speech was NOTHING compared to his father. The choice of word, the tonality, the sincerity, the confidence, etc. everything Tony Benn presented was whole-heartedly and carefully crafted to express his passion and determination to stop the war. His intention had nothing to do with politics; nothing to do with money; nothing to do with the interest of those who would benefit him were he to vote against the war. He genuinely cared for the lives of those innocent people who, in Tony Benn's words, had no part to play in the brutality of the regime which they were dealing with. In contrast, Hilary constantly went back and forth with his "script", so he could make sure he mentioned every single one of those who he deemed beneficial to his political campaign. His body languages showed no passion towards his seemingly righteous words. It only showed brilliant acting, a deliberate plan of artificial movements in attempt to persuade. However, no matter how he tried to raise and lower his tone or waving his hands strongly in different direction, a show is just a show. Oh how typical it is that majority of modern politicians nowadays act in this shameful way while pretending to represent the interest of the people.
