Tony accidentally hits the R2 News ID instead of the travel jingle for Bobbie Pryor. Taken from a few years ago when he hosted Pick of the Pops from our archives for this special day. Happy 80th birthday Mr Blackburn!

It happens to the best of us & at least Tony Blackburn can laugh it off & it is just typically classic of him that he recalls his last mistake on the exact date as well! Tony Blackburn is a national treasure & he deserves an award from the State for his services to radio. I love his Sounds of the Sixties show on early Saturday mornings on BBC Radio 2 & his time with Dermot O'Leary as well, boys together they are! Happy 80th birthday to you sir!

Actually, he’s made a few mistakes more recently - calling Duran Duran Durran Durran - several times on the same show - he was ultimately corrected - he played It’s A Mystery by Toyah from the Four From Toyah EP at 45 instead of 33 - then played the next record on that turntable at 33 instead of 45 - both instances during his tenure as the host of the Top 40 - then, while filling in on the Real Radio breakfast show in South Wales - and I corrected him on that - he said Sarah Greene was married to Keith Chegwin - she was married to Mike Smith and, I believe that the situation still holds - when I phoned up, I was quite surprised to hear him answer the phone - I said “Tony Blackburn has just made a mistake!”. “I don’t make mistakes”, he said! “Oh, yes - Durran Durran!”.

Mike Smith sadly passed away in August 2014, so unfortunately Sarah Greene being married to him doesn't hold anymore.

@@r4h4al I'm not sure that the pronunciation of proper names can even be seen as a personal choice really. For example my username on here is Mr Danny Detail, and if you arbitrarily choose to pronounce it 'Denny doe tile' then you are no longer saying my username. In the case of Duran Duran the name comes from a character in the film Barberella, and is thus pronounced the same way as the name in the film. Whilst Tony wasn't in a position to choose how he and his listeners would pronounce Duran Duran, he can nonetheless be forgiven if he didn't know the film and therefore didn't know the correct pronunciation.

My wife told me that around 1977, when Blackburn was presenting a disco in Manchester, near Oxford Rd, in front of everyone on the stage, he fondled the breast of a girl standing next to him.
