I had a blast discussing my tool changer project challenges with Tony at the Duet3D booth at formnext. The Duet3D product lineup and the new multiple independent g-code streams can solve a big challenge for my 10-hotend tool changer, enabling it to operate independently from the 3D printer, while executing moves at the same time, and with synchronization points when the tool changing takes place; a key feature that was going to take months of effort. At formnext, Tony shows the awesome capabilities of the Duet boards and RepRapFirmware. We also witnessed their new high-power closed-loop motors that integrate seamlessly with the hardware and firmware.
The Duet boards are made for both industrial and consumer use. They're getting exciting new firmware features for 3D printers and CNC machines. More details at duet3d.com/

That is very exciting. Duet is a very nice company with quality stuff and this is opening many possibilities. Thanks for sharing Mihai! You do a good a job at interviewing people :) its good to see you live :)

Hey, thanks Vez! I was very tired 😄 Yes, talking to Duet to see how we can implement all the crazy features that I want. Trying to resist the urge to convert to a CoreXY 😂

I was tempted to switch to Klipper but going to stick with Duet after this!

That's a heavy conversation, lots of goodies in there! Great showcase, seems like they're doing an excellent job of implementing common sense improvements in a really intelligent way.

Been using Duet boards and RepRap firmware for a couple years now and am constantly impressed. I will say the custom gcode macros are very easy to implement and if you need help the people on the Duet forums are very helpful. It doesn't get mentioned in the video but one of the coolest features of RepRap firmware, thanks to it being open source and development from Team Gloomy, is the ability to use certain manufacturers mainboards as expansion boards. For example if you want to keep using your Duet 3 Mainboard but need 7 additional stepper drivers, a number unfortunately no current single Duet board can handle, you can instead use a BTT Octopus Pro as an expansion board!

Cool! Where can I find more about this?

@@MihaiDesigns Hi Mihai, looks like my reply might be getting held up because I included links 🤐. If you search for Team Gloomy RepRap their page should come up. The gcode you need in the config file is M954, more information on that and some of the limitations(very few in the newest versions of reprap) can be found in the duet3d documentation which should also be easily searched for.

you should be able to do that with Klipper Firmware too.

GH Enterprise has therefore found a solution that allows you to add Input Shaping to 3D printers in a simple and immediate way, avoiding the use of external host cards such as RPI4. Just replace the X and Y axis drivers with the GH Smart Shaper drivers, add some configuration commands to your g-code and you are ready to print with input shaping.

Great video Mihai. I think the constant zooming in and out by the camera is distracting though.

Shouldn't this be fairly easy to do with Klipper? I mean, you can already run multiple printers at the same time with one Klipper UI, so it should be trivial to do this. You'd still need a can/ramps board or something, but that might be desirable anyway.
@MihaiDesigns
@MihaiDesigns Год назад
I don't know... I could get 80% of what I need relatively fast, but I've been looking into this a bit and it looks like in the end I would have to write a ton of functionality, plus getting two "printers" to talk to each other as Klipper has only one g-code execution stream. We'll be investigating to see how much effort it would take to do everything in RRF and then compare.
@marcus3d
@marcus3d Год назад
@@MihaiDesigns Yes, you need 2 klipper&moonraker sets, and then control both from the same fluidd/mainsail UI. I'm not sure how to choose which instance commands will go to in macros. I wonder how the multi-stream code looks on RR.

I fail to see why this is a huge issue. The second control board (that does the parked hot ends) could be really cheap, you kinda just need 10 MOSFETs

Duet3d is such a great product…stay away from Chinese boards (low quality, horrible support, most probably back doors, etc)

What kind of backdoors? All boards use open source firmware that you build by yourself. Complex ARM-based boards running Linux all include some sort of closed blobs, both Chinese and not Chinese, thus have equal possibility of having backdoors.
