It took 4 men and 8 hours to build a ramp. Tony Hawk was the first to attempt doing a jump like this. This MTV recording is part of history for both skaters and music videos. Have fun!
Xighor it isnt a matter of being pussies lmao youre mad conceded homie. its about not having an extremely famous person get seriously fucking injured, or even die, under their supervision and permission. do you even know how this shit works homie? cause the company would almost absolutely just go into the fuckin ground if some shit like that happened. you didnt even think before commenting fool 🥱
@@Xighor Tony Hawk's family bringing a nine figure wrongful death claim against MTV and me getting it dismissed instantly with the famous "Oh, so ur saying he wuz a fuckin pussy?" defense
This just brings back memories of having to sit through 50+ commercials and advertisements before the big jump happens. It would be hours of talking and build up for a 5 sec scene
To be fair that was coming from MTV in the year 2000. They probably thought 311 were going to have a bigger cultural impact than the Beatles or some shit lol
@@ShutUpBubi You're entitled to your opinion. However I think most people agree JW's Ollie is one of the craziest things ever done on a skateboard. For a top level vert skater like Tony, this gap isn't really that big, he cleared it by miles first try and could have gone further I'm sure.. JWs gap was flat, dusty and dirty, and also not far off the record for farthest Ollie on flat ever lol. I don't believe it was quite 16ft, but insane none the less.
Probably a net like 15 feet below him and the helmet is so his head doesn’t go too far back and break his neck if he lands flat on his back or head first
He wears the helmet mostly just to show that wearing a helmet is cool and should be done, because tons of skaters don’t wear protective gear because they say it doesn’t look cool/hinder their performance. He’s being a good role model
Worst case scenario would be falling to the alley, but one bad scenario could be a poor landing on the other building, and the helmet would help in that situation
It would still be a lot better than not having one. Plus one woman survived after falling 33,000ft out of an airplane, and one injury she had WAS a fractured skull, so it probably is a good idea. Your legs and ribs and so on breaking sucks, but they can heal. Fucking up your skull is extremely sketchy comparatively. Even with minor skull fractures they'll probably still staple your head together
Love how the hosts were playing it up hard and Tony downplays it, I know how to do a jump ramp... Love Tony Hawk just one of those icons of society who'll be remembered forever.
yeah it was kinda obvious that tony was gonna nail it tho. i doubt he wouldve done it for a short mtv segment if he had any doubt. the gut was just hyping it up to make it more exciting for the teens watching
Didn't think this old recording would receive that much resonance. :) I found it on a really old backup DVD of my harddrive from when I was still a student. Great to see that there are people who show some love for Tony's achievements in the past! Keep commenting!
Tony Hawk: *lands safely on the second building* Hosts: *cheers* Tony Hawk: *still continously skating at a fast rate, not knowing the building he landed on has no parapet walls* Hosts: 🗿
*continuing, he crashes into multiple people and pieces of film equipment, taking them with him. They all careen off the other side of the 60 foot building*
@@elijahmarshall475 *miraculously, tony survives by landing on the bodies of the crew. he continues his rampage killing 15 homeless people in the process*
There’s some pretty good stuff from earlier too. It’s only gotten worse over time as everything’s consolidated to like 5 major networks and commercialization is so rampant.
Well maybe that’s because nobody really views TV as the ”future” of entertainment anymore. Right now is probably the height of internet entertainment such as youtube and netflix. Can we just take a moment and realize how lucky we are for having youtube.. for free??
"Biggest moment in skate board history" Jeremy wray laughs as he clears the same gap distance with a flat ollie on some sketchy abandoned watertowers. EDIT: officially my most liked comment. Fuck yeah, skaters unite!
@@ShutUpBubi Look it up and learn some skate history. Pretty much unanimously agreed as one of the sketchiest skate gaps of all time. The mad lad broke in and did it on a 30 minute break while filming a how to kickflip video haha.
I am so glad you found it!! I even cannot remember why I saved that video back then, but really thought that there might be one or two people in the world, who'd love to see it - even after 20 years. ;-) And here you are!
@@Tronex2009 Dude, me even more. I explained elsewhere, but I was a major reason why that stunt even happened. I worked for the building owner and helped put together that spot with MTV and the location folks. I've been looking for this video for ages. I still have the show recorded on VHS somewhere, but I'm so so happy it's here.
This jump is way more dangerous than Jeremy Wray's water tower ollie. I think Jeremy's ollie was kind of surreal, that's why so remarkable, but personally I would risk the water tower ollie instead of the jump on this video.
You got it waaaaaaaaaaay fucked up, youd have to parkour up to the tower to even do the ollie, flat foot long jump across to get a shot at it, then ollie like 16 feet under your own power, and if you land it you have to stop before going off the otherside, and then get down, and then run from cops, not to derail what tony did but its two way different ballgames
@@douglas5097 alright, but yeah in terms of just trying it and probably not dying that ramp is really helpful but you still have to boost over it to make the jump, anyway im sure the building drop is higher but those water towers are still up there though.
The people present? Theyd cut and this wouldn't be released, just written about in obituaries and magazines. No THPS... so skating dies off before the popularity surge in the early 2000s. Other things fueled by skating, like Jackass, probably wouldn't have been a thing... no thanks
Can you honestly say that you wouldn't take money from the milk council, 311, or Totino's Pizza Rolls? Like, what shady deals has he made? Guy's a legend, and gives a bunch back to the community.
OMG - I've been looking for this for 20 years! I WAS THERE THAT DAY. I worked for the company that owned the buildings and I worked with MTV to get this all done.
@@retrovcr777 in an alternate universe there would be no alternate universe, making it an infinite amount of alternate universe's. Take that in for a second...
tony hawk came and did tricks at my elementary school it was cool I gotta say that back then meeting a cool person in 90s and early 2000s wasnt out of the norm (at the time he mostly did bike tricks him and another pro skater dont remember why though)
