15 years today since Tony Jay’s been gone.😢 The echoes of his voice still gives me chills. Him voicing Frollo truly was a gift. Rest in God’s peace, Tony. You will never be forgotten.🙏🏻

Tony Jay Was Great As Frollo For a Powerful Disney Villain Even He Doesn't Have Magic I Love Tony Jay When He Speaks He Sounds Like Him As Well RIP Tony Jay!
I cannot believe he was over 60 years old when he voiced Claude Frollo which is so amazing and awesome and says a lot. Tony Jay was very talented and did a wonderful job. Nobody will ever replace him as Frollo.
"...to make him into a fully-fleshed, three-dimensional character; a tragic figure rather than an out-and-out senseless Villain. In other words, everything he does, in a wicked sense, is understandable, but not excusable..." It would be a trap to say that this describes all politicians -- though for that matter...
Tony Jay does know that Disney was intent on having Frollo to be as evil and as vile as possible (as well as being blinded to the consequences of his actions), in an attempt to avert the trope "Evil is Cool", common to many Disney villains. He doesn't seem tragic by his vileness and actions at all.
@@DavidBContentExtravaganza3967 ... See, that's the first I've heard at all. The quote was directly from the actor. (You see I wrote quote marks around it.) He's more immediately, recognizably "evil" than the character in the book, but one certainly doesn't mean the other.
@@DavidBContentExtravaganza3967 The idea is *possible,* or something like it, but... I don't remember anything about, "let's really try to keep the audience from liking him". Could you tell me where you got that?
Tony Jay was, and still is, one of my favourite voice actors. He was amazing, not just as Frollo, but also Shere Khan, Magneto, Baron Mordo and Galactus. RIP, Tony.
Frollo wouldn’t have been the same without this man lending his blessed voice. It’s good that he understood his character so well, as any sane person could be able to see right through his lies and deception, even if it took time to realize (like for Quasi). Yet Frollo also knew exactly what he wanted and damn well made sure everyone around him knew, and they feared him for how far he was willing to go to get her.
2006 was a tragedy in Disney 2006 was the 10th anniversary of Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame but tragic For Disney that Tony Jay Voice of Judge Frollo had passed away from lung cancer

Disney could have brought in the greatest actor in the history of Hollywood to play Frollo and it wouldn't even be a quarter as good as what Tony Jay brought us.

"The birth of one of Kain's abominations traps the essence of life. It is this soul that animated the corpse you lived in. And that, Raziel, is the demise of Nosgoth. There is no balance; the souls of the dead remain trapped; I cannot spin them in the Wheel of Fate; they cannot complete their destinies. Redeem yourself. Or if you prefer, avenge yourself. Settle your dispute with Kain. Destroy him an your brethren and let the Wheel of Fate churn again. Use your hatred to reave their souls - I can make it possible. Become my Soul Reaver. My angel of death." - The Elder God (Tony Jay)

I don’t know is what it is about his voice that is so awesome. It’s not just that it’s deep. It’s chilling. It’s menacing. It sounds evil and sinister. It completely belies Tony Jay’s actual personality. He seems to be a very nice and sweet guy in real life.
I came to this video knowing that M. d’Arque, Captain Saladin, Gate (two characters from the adventure game King’s Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow, 1992), and Frollo had the same voice profile. Saladin and Frollo in particular have a large inventory of lines recorded, and so I basically had it in my head that Tony Jay was using his real voice albeit in-character. What I came to see is how he could actually speak out-of-character using that voice.

Maybe Disney didn't want us to feel sorry for him when he died? On the other hand, Shere Khan died in the original story. They Disney version was something of a anti-villain and survived the film.
+HawaiiKnut I never got the chance to read THBOND as a book, but it seems as if Disney was willing to take a shot with a serious adaptation like this and make Frollo the antithesis of Christianity. As Jay said, Frollo's a transparent character, so as viewers, it's clear that his atrocious actions "are understandable, but not excusable"; it doesn't fall along the guidelines and principles of a true Catholic
he's tragic in the sense that he's consumed by his flaws, you see in hellfire when he sings "god have mercy on her, god have mercy on me". he's not like most other disney villains who revel in their own evil, he's seen the darkest side of himself and is scared of what he sees.
@@HawaiiKnut No way. The Disney version of Shere Khan is a full-fledged villain like other most Disney Villains. Walt Disney never attempt to make him anti, just full villain who just remained alive upon defeat so you got it all wrong.
Its interesting that despite being the darkest and most evil villain Disney has ever created, Tony Jay shows some sympathy for Frollo without justifying his crimes.
Frollo was delusional. He always believed he was doing the right thing in “protecting” Paris and proving his loyalty to God by ridding the world of the sinful/criminals-whoever he believed they were. The (major) problem was that he was a sadistic sociopath who thought HE could do no wrong and let temptations overtake him.
***** I know heart surgery is always touch and go..BUT...come on. And being who he was you know we have gotten the best of the best..Money lets you pick and choose..
