Whitehouse Blues was actually written by Charlie Poole from Eden, N C . First banjo player to make recording way before 1927. Unfortunately he never received a lot of credit for his work.
This is a phenomenal version of this song. I wish this was available on iTunes or something. These are some of the greatest bluegrass players ever. Jerry Douglas is the greatest dobro player ever.
Aliens visited during this concert and realized the hicks in the boondocks knew more about music than they did so they peaced out. Is the HD version of this concert available anywhere?
Close enough, but my reason for asking XLIVwhodat is that I believe that you can't play like TR( Maybe not even close) and must really envy Tony. I have NEVER heard anyone say they don't like Tony!!!
OK, Bob Lackey, I took you up on your offer. The Flatt and Scruggs version DOES smoke white hot, but comparing the tunes is like apples and oranges, well, OK, apples and a slightly different kind of... apples. Instrumentation is different and the feel is slightly different--both tunes rage off the rails, but one isn't better'n the other.
Well I saw a version of this at Merlefest 96 or 97 on the old Hillside Stage. Sam was late and ran straight to the mic and said timing, timing, timing. By the next song he had Tony's pantlegs rolled up to his knees. That lineup was Tony, Sam, Victor Wooten, Futureman playing a box, stuart Duncan on fiddle, maybe Pete Wernick on Banjo(definitely not Bela) and maybe Jerry..I have the tape hiding somewhere. Great stuff. Went to Merlefest 96-2000. I am blessed..
@jamiedaley I hate to say it, but to me, the flatt and scruggs version smokes this version. Type in "whitehouse blues flatt and scruggs" and take a listen. Someone did a slide show for the video but musically it smokes this version and I think Tony, Sam and Bela would admit that. They are all big Flatt, Scruggs, Monroe, Reno, Smiley, Stanley brothers fans anyway.
