Quill was a fool smacking Thanos' face knowing that Mantis was already struggling to keep control of him. It was Quill that caused that plan to not work.

Overconfident? Nah bro, not even close... Lets remember that for starters they could not control the ship so their arrival to Titan was not into question and the Guardians didnt seem like helping them return to Earth so fighting Thanos was the best chance theily had and Tony did had a plan and even was the only one drawing blood from Thanos even if it was just a small drop and if it wasnt for Quill losing it and hitting Thanos, they could have won.

Fool 😂😂😂 it was well calculated but there was a an unnotice variable in the equation that's why it failed. Tony just calculated everything to the point where his answer is the nearest to the right answer.
