I never liked Gloria or much of feminism, but she brought up a good point that if Flint was showing demeaning material of Jews or other minorities he wouldn’t be portrayed as this champion of Free speech
Perhaps, but even purveyors of hate speech have certain first-amendment protections. Flynt not only was involved with a lawsuit that went all the way to the supreme court, but was almost assassinated and also put in prison. I would argue that his unique life story is what inspired Milos Forman to make the biopic about him. Flynt was shown to have what seemed to be genuine love for his wife Althea, and Forman as a director doesn't seem to have misogyny as a hallmark of his movies.
Flynt portrayed violence in his magazine as a protest of the hypocritical censorship its sexual content received. He made the point that he could publish photos of mass burials of bodies in the holocaust or other heinous acts of violence but wasn't able to publish photos of what should be considered a beautiful and natural act, such as sexual relations. He knew he'd get away with photos of such violence because the news media did it all the time and even won awards for it. How many times have we seen award-winning photos of Buddhist monks setting themselves on fire and the like? Yet depictions of nudity and sex put Flynt in jail. Nothing short of an obscene level of hypocrisy on the part of the religious right can explain that.
It saddens me when so many people give "feminism" a bad rap! It is often made out to be a word for describing outspoken, angry women who want to take power away from men, or something like that. In reality, the basic definition of 'feminism' is simply "the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes." ...Angry, outspoken women are just a bi-product of so many centuries of oppression. ;-)
Gloria Steinem is not exactly a keen viewer of cinema. The HERO of the film is NOT Larry Flynt. The HERO of the film is Alan Isaacman, who at various points during the film is portrayed as saying that he himself finds Hustler magazine disgusting. How Steinhem, presumably an intelligent adult, could possibly have view The People vs. Larry Flynt and come away with the impression that the film glorifies Hustler magazine boggles the mind.
She may be resentful of the fact that the movie doesnt show most of the more graphic directions that the magazine has taken at certain points in the past - directions that in many quarters could be labeled 'misogynist'.
I used to respect Gloria UNTIL she supported Amber Heard in abusing Johnny Depp. Even when the verdict and all the evidence pointed to Amber being the abuser, Gloria did not care, so in the end she just turned out to be another silly woman.
She only wants the freedom of speech to protect people who's speech is the same as hers. Larry's philosophy was based on tolerating both kinds of speech- the speech you agree with and the speech you don't.
I was born in 1966 and was a child when Flynt was going to jail for his publiccations. To this day, he is one of my hero's for standing up for my rights. SNL would not exist if not for him. Not that SNL is any good today.
It's an odd connection to make, as Hustler got away with stuff that could never fly on network TV - including SNL. The real 'roots' of SNL are seen in earlier comedic shows like "Your Show of Shows", "Ernie Kovacs", and "Laugh-In", as well as "The Groove Tube" (a feature film consisted of individual comedic bits all packaged together).
I’m reading negative comments about Charlie Rose. He’s the interviewer. He’s not a political commentator. He’s not on his show to take sides. Have any of you ever seen the Charlie Rose show? His job as an interviewer is to play the devil’s advocate and ask probing questions. He did it well. He’s a good interviewer and a good news man despite his obvious personal issues.
wish he could've asked some more probing questions to Tonya... he cuts her off when she says 'he abused me' and doesn't follow up when she describes herself as a victim of pornography. i feel like i'm leaving the interview with a lot left unsaid by Tonya.
I met Althea Flynts nephew... He said The People vs Larry Flynt was bs , It monstrized Althea and honored Larry... Althea was nothing like Whoretneney Love portrayed her as. Plus Larry refused to release Altheas body to her sister to be buried next to her mother. .. she was reinterred eventually
I also don't know what movie these people are talking about. It certainly wasn't the one I saw, in which Flynt was portrayed as an asshole who only stumbled into a defense of the first amendment by sheer accident. That being said, it's been clear for many years that Larry Flynt was not mentally typical. Whether it was bipolar disorder or some other condition or combination of conditions, Flynt wasn't "right in the head", probably ... ever. That doesn't mean he had no right to free speech. At least he didn't incite violent insurrection like former president Trump.
Larry admitted in more recent years that he tried 'fake' mental instability with the hopes of getting admitted to a psychiatric facility, when he was on trial for the DeLorean matter.
I despise pornography. But Ms Steinem is trying to say that because he’s a pornographer he cannot make a positive contribution to society. Which is false. The two ideas need to be separated. The idea of free speech, in this case, had nothing to do with porn. It had to do with satire and the question of whether or not extreme satire is protected by the first amendment. Larry Flynt had the money and the power to take this case all the way to the Supreme Court and gave us another ground-breaking decision that will guide us for the future.
Pornography is as old as our species, perhaps older. The dildo predates the wheel ffs. Hate it all you want, it's always been there and it always will be. What we need to learn to do is deal with it in a healthy, educated manner befitting our ostensible status as the pinnacle of evolution.
Dang I guess even back during my favorite decade the 90s there were still delicate little snowflakes. We just didn't care what they had to say. I didn't know this interview even existed LOL
you probably mean 'irony'. Neither man was inherently great, but both represented extremes - Flynt in tasteless media, and Fallwell in religious doctrine.
Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. Bible prophecies are continuing to be fulfilled. Life and love are miracles from God each day.
I love the movie and it just made me love Larry Flynt and I thought it was also a great love story because he could have had anybody in as many girls as he wanted to have and he loved alethea❤
sounds like the only thing flynt was guilty of here was not being around for his daughter..he wasnt there and that allowed people to use his daughter to fight their own agenda...i bet the "hell he put his daughter through was more other people looking down on her or treating her some kind of way just because of her last name and who her father was, she simply hates him for not being around but that isnt as impactful as "he put me through hell"
@@smileyglitter852 you should spread somthing that you dont know for a fact is true or not.because only 1 sister claimed sexual abuse while the other sister said she never saw any sign of sexual abuse and that her sister never said anything about it....the fact that you said he abused his daughters rather then just the 1 that made the claim tells me you didnt do any research ,your just going by what you heard somwhere....my next point is his daughters most likly grew up spoiled and disfunctional im sure its not above the daughter that made the claim to lie either for attention or to get back at dad for not being around...and shame of you for believing just because a female made the claim with zero proof
He took a lie detector test to prove he didn't abuse his daughter, and he passed, but she never took one, saying she didn't believe in them, I think the real reason is she knows she's lying.
Gloria made an intelligent argument. This movie was made by banking on the masses having never seen Hustler. There is plenty of room to be pro porn but still anti-Hustler.
@@LS_777Yeah, it's always nice when "journalists" allow people to speak their side of any story... as long as they don't drone on and on for too long. (Not saying that she would've... but just general principle). In the end, Charlie Rose got was coming to him!
People forget Charlie was #MeToo’d in 2018 and fired by CBS. One of the many allegations was he stripped nude and came out to greet his 20-something assistant, who reported him to CBS. I think I blocked out the other allegations.
@@Jamietheroadrunner Exactly! This is why I made the magazine comment. OF COURSE that a-hole was (and most-likely STILL IS) a fan of porno mags!!! I'm grateful for the Me Too movement! I hope the momentum never slows down too much with it! It was FINALLY time to start calling that sh*t out in the mainstream spotlight!!! Hopefully make ALL the other 'powerful' men in America think twice before acting like creeps!!! :-/
Just the July 1978, September 1985, and April 1996 issues. And those he got from a (perverse) friend. Other than that, his library is pretty much PG-rated. 😛
Wth does that have to do with anything? There are videos where you can readily share your opinions on that topic. Stop spilling hate stuff on irrelevant posts.
So believe it or not. I have seen the movie “The People Vs Larry Flynt” a few days ago on a Saturday evening. And I can be completely honest with every one reading this right now that I have seen a lot of documentaries and biographies about other magazines such as playboy, and so on. And honestly I did think at first that it was an interesting biography at first. Woody Harlson really did a great job playing the role of Larry Flynt. And the rest of the cast did a great job as well. I will give the movie that. And after watching this little video for the first couple of times and if all of those things that his daughter Tonya said was true about her being abused and treated unfairly by him then that’s really sad to hear and I do feel her. There is so much more about the movie that I can list and talk about. But apparently it will take forever to name all of them. So yeah Larry Flynt really did sound like he was such hot stuff and a hero but he wasn’t. He surely indeed was a monster like Tonya said and I agree with her. And I also agreed a lot with what Gloria said as well. So with that being said my final rating for the film is a 3/10 It was another one of those movies that I was interesting in seeing and now I really regret watching it and wished I hadn’t.
If she has nothing but bad stuff to say about her father and thinks he's a monster then why is she using his last name before her married name and why is she going around making money off of him?! She could just live a quiet life and say nothing and not even be associated with him or his name anymore!
Flynt chose to depict violence in his magazine because it wasn't being censored. The powers that be were censoring the sexual content of Flynt's publication. So he switched to violent content, to demonstrate their hypocrisy. This needs to be understood.
The "powers that be" never censored his content, they continued to run egregious horrific pornography throughout Hustler's entirety. I like Lary Flynt but he went too far and it's true he was awful to women.
"The "powers that be" never censored his content..." - That's just a bald-faced lie. Hustler was not only censored multiple times in multiple locations but Flynt himself was prosecuted for publishing it. Do you live under a rock?! @@neurologybrain
The movie is a wild satire filled w/ a good deal of black humor. I did not see flynt as being shown as a hero at all. The man's life was filled w/ depravity and darkness. Perhaps if the main actor was someone other than woody harrelson, it may have had a different effect.
Gloria Steinem did more damage to woman then Larry ever did. You might notice his daughter, who claims she's so against her father, yet kept his name after being married.
These allegations don’t shock me. Many people who are absolutely obsessed by sexuality are often sexual abusers or have been sexually abused. But, Larry Flynt has been acquitted of all his sins at death (Romans 6:7) and paid for all of his sins at death. There is no burning Hell below, as the Devil is on earth with us (Revelation 12:9). Larry Flynt is now unconscious of anything at all and is not aware of anything anymore (Ecclesiastes 9:5 and Isaiah 26:14). He is no longer able to hurt anyone else.
Also, the idea that people can’t hurt people after their death is ridiculous. If someone abuses me, the hurt does not stop just because they die. Open your eyes to that.
@@REALCrazyCritic yes, their victims continue to live on even after their abuser dies. With that said, Larry himself denies ever having abused Tonya, for whatever that is worth.
Your religion has spawned farrrrr more abuse of women and children than anything Flynt ever did by showing a nude body. Religion is mind controlling fairy tales. He doesn't need your blessings or pronouncements.
@@briskettacos Actually, since the 1400’s to the early 1900’s, queens were almost 30% more likely to wage war than kings. The fact that you don’t know about history (lets face it, few women do) doesnt mean they didnt exist. Queen Isabella of Spain, Queen Victoria of England who ruled over the biggest empire in human history, Boudicca, Mavia of Arabia, Zenobia etc. Women were MORE likely to wage war than men, proved by academical studies. Dont let your lack of knowledge blur history.
@@hdajhdaahha3836 you don’t seriously believe that those women made the choice to begin and end wars do you?? 😂 Men would have ran things from behind the scenes and they’d have had so many male royal advisors, not to mention, a government full of men.... and an army of men who could’ve refused to fight, after all, they are stronger than women.... those Queens were not the ones making the decisions in times when women couldn’t even vote. 👁
Their opinion is not a fact. They sound so angry. Pornography is not good or bad but it is what you make of it. For some people ir can be incredibly damaging and for some others ( Mr Flynt ) nothing less than phenomenal.
all it did for 'mr. flynt' was make him money. Granted, that is a necessary thing in life. He also had to sacrifice greatly along the way to fame and fortune - consider his time in jail, and the assassination attempt.
@@wylier certainly, he suffered a lot, but it was more than just making money. Not only he created his own brand but he was and Hustler still is a world leader in providing adult entertainment.
What is the hostility all about? A successful magazine publisher? Maybe Ms. Steinem and some others prefer other kinds of content, but this is America. To each his own. My friends and I all love Hustler; we're guys, what do you expect.
Okay, so Flynt was not a knight in shining armor. I doubt anyone in the porn industry is; it is an industry & like all other kinds, it exists so that production houses & other businesses can earn a profit. What I don't get is Tonya claiming she is a "victim of pornography". How? Did her father make her pose nude or what?
