Is this too big? I finally take a look at the Peak Design Tech Pouch. I love packing cubes, pouches etc. to pack modular. And this is probably one of the more popular ones.

FULL DISCLOSURE:
This video is not sponsored nor did I receive any money. While I sometimes get bags for free, I have to pay custom fees, shipping fees and all my videos have lots of production costs (e.g. software and musicrights). Therefore I invest my own money into all of these videos and I have no intention to be biased towards a product or company. Every review and quicklook is written by me and no company can pay for preferential scheduling or what is said in the video. Furthermore, the company sees the video the same time as all viewers here on youtube. All opinions in this video are my own unless stated otherwise.
HOW I REVIEW:
As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICKLOOK AND A REVIEW:
A Quicklook usually covers pre-production units or items that I only used for a short period of time. While Reviews cover final items that I have reviewed intensively.
LINKS:
For all my videos I decided not to include links for the products. Everyone is living in different countries and therefore has to deal with different shipping and customs fees. That is why I would advice everyone just to Google the product within their country to find the best deals. For instance: I live in Germany, It wouldn’t make sense to give you a German link while you might be living in USA or Asia. I hope that is understandable.

As someone who works in a hotdesk office I can say this pouch is the perfect size. And in my opinion you can NEVER have too many pockets. Also the weatherproof material was chosen because this pouch can be used as a sling with peaks straps, four day trips or as a camera bag.

I got that pouch since several months now and i completely agree, it's quite big. However, I am using it almost on a daily basis without any travel or outside use. When travelling, the pouch is in fact big enough to carry a switch (with joycons removed) and all my tech cables and other stuff in one place. At home... well, sounds silly but the pouch is "standing" when fully opened and that's just perfect for a kind of "organized" drawer directly on the table where i can toss the cables/usb keys/... when i am not using them or grab them quickly from it when needed. (also quite expensive)

Thanks for the comment. Now that you say it: the pouch has been standing on my desk for a while and it helps a lot to reduce clutter. Furthermore, during covid it's great to move stuff around the house with it. Good point. Thanks

I agree 100%. I got it but then realized that its way to bulky and uncrompessable for using in my backpack. Now I use it as some sort of "transportable drawer" at home, same as you do! For my backpack, I swtiched to a Thule Subterra PowerShuttle. It it stiff but still compressable and has fewer pockets and a large main compartment.

I actually got it for this purpose, to keep things at home organized. Of course it'll come with me on travels but it's so useful to keep everything in one place ready to go at home too!

I got it after backing the kickstarter campaign and have been using it ever since. Yes, it's bulky and a bit rigid, I would love it to be a bit more expandable when you fill it with stuff but overall it's the best tech pouch I've ever used :)

I'll admit I'm a Peak Designs fan. I love my Travel Backpack, Travel Duffel, packing cubes and yes, Tech Pouch. I've had the Tech pouch for well over a year and it's been fantastic. Is it bulky? Yes. You're absolutely correct on that. I travel as a Sales Engineer and to be able to pull out my laptop and have all gear needed next to me already organized and easy to find makes it a perfect travel when I'm ready to work. It sits on the desk and the fold-out, origami design is aesthetically pleasing and a joy to use. It nests in my travel backpack along with my packing cubes and dopp kit when traveling long distances but sits alone with my laptop in a smaller backpack when heading into the office or customer site. I don't take it out when on an airplane as I usually rely on a smaller Topo Designs accessory bag to carry my travel essentials (airpods, battery charger & cables, microfiber cloth & breath mints) when boarding a flight. But the perfect use case for me is as a desk side companion to keep gear readily available and well organized. Great video as always Bo! Keep up the amazing work.

After reading a bunch of comments and reading yours, I have to rethink the idea of this pouch. The way you describe it makes sense. When moving desks and workspaces, just putting the tech pouch on the desk to keep everything clutter free and organized, makes a lot of sense. I guess with that in mind and enough space in your bag then this is probably a very good bag

I’ve used the tech pouch for about a year now. I personally would not use it for edc but i find more use for it when i travel. I use this to put in not just my tech and wires, but also my little survival travel kit that ive streamlined to its most essential items (small pen, mini led flashlight, etc). Overall, yes its bulky and can get heavy but i rest easy knowing my stuff is protected and organized the way i like it.

Thanks for the great video Bo. I've had the pouch for ages and used to use it for weekly travel for work while we still could. It lasts really well and still looks as good as when I started using it. I agree with your comments about loading it and I've learned to put less in it each week because if it's stuffed full it does become bulky.

Agree with almost all of your points. I love mine but a couple of years in and I still haven’t managed to fully organise to the point where I don’t have to go routing about inside trying to find whatever I’m trying to find. Always thought I had a mental block but after watching this video I realise it’s probably not just me.

I love it! I have it in my Peak Design Everyday Backpack 30l version 1 on the lowest 'compartment'. The PD backpack is used for work, so I normally use it everday and it's good to know that you have all your adapters/cables/battery pack with you all the time. Even better when you travel, just grab it an you know you have everything with you!

Thanks, Frederik. Ah, in the 30L it definitely fits better. In the 20L version it only fits the way I show it in the video unfortunately

Really love the form factor. Use this as my EDC with sling strap attached really ease everything. I carry my smartphones, sunglass, Bluetooth earphone, keys, wallet, multi-tools, cables and sometimes powerbank. When travelling can put passport and airline ticket. Furthermore the water resistance is top notch. Once the bag was soaking wet due to heavy rain, but item inside remained dry. One nitpick would probably be the zipper not that robust.

I bought one a year ago and I love it everything fits in and stay organised. The only problem is the size, sometimes I have to be back to my “several pouches” organisation when I’m travelling.

It is a big and heavy pouch, but it stores everything I could ever need on a daily basis. I usually carry my laptop in a laptop sleeve, my iPad, a Bellroy pencil case, and my tech pouch in a backpack. My pouch is pretty full. I don’t think any other pouch could fit what I need to carry while being organized. I have tried other pouches and using pockets inside my backpack, but nothing comes close to this pouch. I love this pouch.

I carried this to South Africa & Madagascar in my Atlas camera back pack. It is bulky and could be slimmer but there’s a perfect spot in my bag for it. It carried every thing I needed perfectly. And when I’m home it acts as a good place to store cables & accessories safely. I think it’s great & recommend, but if you’re trynna go more slim with great quality take a look at Belroy.

Great video as always. I have been using this for about 6 months. Pretty much a love/hate relationship. Yes, it is bulky and heavy (hate) but I love the organisational space and ease of access. I ended with another smaller tech pouch for days when I need a lighter load.

I’ve been using it for EDC for about a year and absolutely love it. It’s the only pouch (that I know) that can fit all my tech stuff including MacBook charger and Sony 1000MX2 NC headphones. So, when I get to office I just need to get only one pouch out of my bag and I’m ready to work. Sometimes I need to switch desks during the day and grabbing all my stuff in one pouch is also a blast. Yes, it’s bulky and may be a bit heavy, but having GR1 as my EDC bag, this doesn’t bother me at all. However, I would really think twice before taking it into the plane. I this case it’s weight and bulkiness becomes a real concern. It’s definitely not an option for one-bag travel.

Nice vid! I downsized to GaN chargers, and purchased the AER Cable Kit 2. About the same size as the PD pouch, just a bit smaller, but really flexible. Like you mentioned in the video; it adapts more to your needs than making you conform to it. I still think the PD pouch is decent though, have my gopro and all its accessories in there now and it does great for that.

I have the tech pouch, but it mostly stays home and is my bigger storage for all cables and sorts, the one I take with my in my bag is the field pouch, it's much lighter and has just enough pockets to get the essentials. The new field pouch v2 is even better with the smaller pockets and included strap. I would maybe take the tech pouch in my carry-on for a trip but in the backpack I try to keep the weight to a minimum.

I agree with you. Recently, I purchase the Sterkmann which is the same size as Peak Design but found it large. I decided to purchase the Bellroy Classic Pouch for daily use. The Peak Design size is great if I’m going out with my laptop, if not I only need a few items and can use a smaller pouch.

Hey, I use to carry three pouches. One for pens, one for personal stuff and one for work. Due to COVID (a bit extra) I bring my now keyboard and mouse. With peak design I managed to fit all in one (except my work laptop charger). Yes it gets a little like Tetris.

I have 2 of them. 😉 One is at home with all I need for my MacBook- charger, cables, dongles - honestly not fully packed but good organized. Second is in my work bag with Charger, mouse etc for my work laptop. I love them both for both use cases. Traveling is a different story. There is is too bulky for me - I do have the PD sling tho as the perfect „under the seat“ bag - while the travel backpack is up in the overhead.

The PD tech pouch (TP) is one of my favorite bags to organize gear. Normally. I combine the TP with a PD camera strap to serve as my go-to EDC city/day sling bag. Because of its limited size, the tech pouch achieves what I believe to be its primary aim: minimal carry. To optimizethe space, study your work flow and identify what equipment is essential for EDC. Then, experiement with what items fit best in the various compartments. Avoid the toxicity of hoarding. Your back and shoulders will thank you. Overall: A good alternative for an EDC sling/over the shoulder bag Pros: Light weight, sleek, multi-comparemts, and black Cons: a bit bulky when placed in smaller backpacks

Hello Bo from Massachusetts, USA. I am a huge fan of you and your videos and I agree with everything you say in this video. However, I have been using this pouch for about one year and I like it very much. You can fit a lot of electronic gear in it. It takes the place of 2 or 3 smaller pouches. It is excellently made. My biggest peeve with it is cost. It is very expensive however since it take s the place of 2 or 3 other pouches I suppose it is priced fairly.

I really enjoy the bag. Definitely bigger, and something where I want some thing smaller if I am not having to carry around a ton. If this is work though I really like it because it is easy to know that I will have everything I need. It is also one of the few EDC pouches that does a really good job of carrying around my nintendo switch in addition to other EDC items. Most of the time I have to pick and choose, but with the Peak Design Tech Pouch I do not have to worry about that. I can fit it in a daily carry bag (though It does take up a good share of the room), and it sits really well at the top of my bag. I can even leave it open at the top of the bag to have easy access to the items inside if I want.

I’ve used the pouch in sling mode as a daily driver on several trips when you can attach their straps via the anchor attachments. The design is good enough as a sling for work when i don’t need to bring my laptop. That’s a fair observation on the bulkiness though, I wish it wasn’t as thick for my use case on some occasions but the weight is fine. I wished it had a two-way zipper so i can wear it on either side. 😊
@Youknowthebo

Using it as a sling bag does make sense. Haven't really thought about it that way because it does look like a handbag then. But I can't deny it's functionality as a sling.
@brooniesirena

I use it like that as well - like Bo says it’s not terribly stylish but good for a smaller bag when hiking. The other thing I use it for is packing things that need a little extra padding during transit - when doing that I really appreciate the extra bulk protecting whatever more fragile stuff is in there.

I have had this pouch for a few months now. I actually love, and it nearly replaces my backpack. I have a lot of small gadgets and things working in IT, and I have several backpacks that aren’t great at organizing many small items; that’s where this tech pouch comes in for me. Today, when I have to go to the data center or something, I use the tech pouch with a shoulder strap, and carry my laptop/tablet in my hands. Now, I’m trying to find the right bag to just hold the tech pouch and my laptop. However, I find most backpacks will have a good amount of empty space in them. Especially since all my stuff is in the pouch, I have a hard time fully utilizing the space of any backpack I try to use now. However, I’m happy to just carry my iPad Pro in my hands with this tech pouch over my shoulder.
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment. I haven't thought about it that way. As a standalone bag this actually makes a bit more sense. If you don't mind the handbag kind of look. But in terms of functionality it does make a lot of sense.

For my perspective this depends on the day to day basis..personally this is quite expensive but the quality is at its best. A Trakke pouch size medium is enough for me to fit all of my tech essentials. Eventhough it is also quite expensive but i am after for the space that it will consume on my bag☺ Stay safe Bo..keep uploading more videos.

I'm a proud user of the Tech Pouch and the V1 20L Everyday pack. I'm very satisfied by their shape, practicality and versatility, have been using them for a year plus now, the downside is loose threads, the stretchy parts of the Tech Pouch and the edges of the backpack strap has some loose threads. Actually is not that big of deal because we could just trim them up and they look perfect again :)

I have had the pouch for about 11 months now and 💯 percent agree with @stephlutin. It's great on my actual desk at home and I use it daily as well. i look at this more like a 17 inch laptop. It's probably going to stay on your desk most of the time but it is nice you can just zip it up and take it all with you every once in a while. Its great to fly or travel with because you don't really take stuff out of it, so you always know you'll have everything you need. And an item this size won't be the difference in say weight restrictions on a plane. Also it fits well in the actual peak design travel bags. One cool feature others mentioned is you can attach the peak design clips and strap to it and turn it into a 2L sling/messenger/hip pack. With all that being said, I bought another smaller pouch as a quick pouch. Bo is right, this thing is too big if you're going light and mobile. for example it wouldn't fit in a laptop bag, briefcase, or tote that well. It'd hog a ton of space. But at the end of the day it's a great size and product if you view it more as a portable desk organizer rather than a lite and mobile pouch. If you want something similar but less rigid the field pouch from peak design is a good alternative and so is the range pouch even though that one is technically for camera lenses. Bellroy has a ton of options too

Good point about GaN. I got the PD Tech Pouch thru Kickstarter, and then the HyperJuice 100W GaN USB-C PD Charger, as well. It’s a good combination for me. I don’t think it’s too big at all, as I have an EDC backpack that’s only 15L, and the Tech Pouch fits in it perfectly. And doesn’t matter about compressability, since it’s under the suspended laptop compartment. Perfect.

This tech pouch is big because it’s not just a tech pouch: it’s also a mini-EDC sling. You can attach Peak Design’s anchor loops and one of their straps to it and turn it into a sling or a waistpack. It’s *just* big enough to be useful as a mini-EDC bag, but not so big that you can’t put it into a 20L backpack as a tech pouch. Also, most other slings are shaped awkwardly and/or have non-detachable straps, whereas this one keeps its boxy shape and has grab handles, so it can fit into most bags. When I use this, I have a multiport USB-C wall charger, a medium-sized GoTubb with my cables, a USB-C 10k mAh power bank, and a tin of mints in the four “origami” pockets, and my Switch or Kindle on one side, and it still has room for a lightweight windbreaker or rain jacket on the other side. The strap gets rolled up and slotted into the center pocket of the “origami” section, and then in the stretchy side pockets I generally put a roll of gaffer tape, some alcohol wipes, and other little doo-dads.

Bought one to complement my PD Everyday Totepack. Long story short, it takes up wayyy too much space. Agree. Overall Peak products are good but the shortcomings you’ve described (bulk, weight) ring true throughout. The Travel line that this Tech pouch is a part of is great but the weight is especially awful (i.e. 45L backpack). I understand the bags are very rugged which I appreciate but I’m starting to feel diminishing returns here... mind you, I have a ton of their bags that I have used for years. And probably still will. Can never find the perfect bag 😆

Used it over almost a year. It fits my needs perfectly but only in specific cases. It’s my „Tech Pouch“ for longer trips with my camera gear, not for my daily work trips. It’s to big for this kind of situations, mostly because I don’t need such an amount of daily tech gear tbh. And it limited my personal choice which bag I will use because some bags are to small for the size of the pouch. ;-) Cheers Bo!

I came to your channel because I'm looking for something smaller. I have the Peak Tech Pouch and I love it when I'm taking my full gear with me. On smaller trips, it's not that useful. I got the Modern Dayfarer Tech Pouch which is a great size, but it doesn't zipper all the way around and has inner pockets with no zipper so your stuff falls out. So I'm looking for another pouch. Don't get me wrong, the Peak is an essential part of my overall photographic organizational strategy. But like you said, it's too big for those trips where you're not needing all of that.

I agree. It’s almost like it’s too good and over engineered for its own good. I bought it for one purpose (for an everyday tech pouch), but use it for something different (the pouch now lives in my Pelican case and is great for storing all my tech accessories for photo shoots).

UPDATE: I have used this more as a travel tech pouch (checked in baggage) and also as a filmmaking onset tool/tech bag (audio adapters, battery pack, hex wrenches, lens cleaner, dust rocket/brush, tape, etc.)

I have had this bag for 2 years & i would not swap it for anything i carry various ssd drives cables flash cards plug in hub for laptop pens pencil & it is full. I dont carry round connection plugs as they are too bulky & heavy they go in my back pack. Love the weather proofing & i own many bags but only use 1 other for indoor parts,

Great video Bo ! I pretty much did the same video about this pouch . Peak design is great but a little too over - engineered for me . Hence my title - Peak Design - Hit and Miss ! 😂 I have enjoyed using it as my studio tech pouch thou ! Everything I need for my channels and podcast is in that one pouch . Hope you’re well mate ! ✌🏼

I was waiting for this. For so long I was debating with myself whether I would need it or not. Bo, is there such thing like a perfect number of pockets for pouches or bags?

Great video on this pouch. I wanted to get one for myself. With a job, I was able to get one for free but that’s going to a friend who also wanted one. The pouch has arrived 2 weeks ago and I was surprised by its large size. Definitely going to reconsider getting one for myself. I think a cheaper, smaller pouch like a pencil-pouch for some accessories is a better idea.

The evergoods cap2 is just slightly smaller, but IMHO much better to load and fits much easier into a bag. Here is my review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4USjm7ZDmU0.html

Reading the comments apparently it works very well for a lot of people, I can see the advantage everything in one place and with the adjustability of the everyday backpack and someone doesn't mind making space for it I can see it working for a lot of people. Lucky for me I only need a few cables to get by.

It's trying to do too many things. If I have something that's actually fragile I wouldn't put it in there to be potentially knocked round with other stuff, and if it's not fragile I just need rudimentary organization.
@venom5809

As you know I have tons of bags and pouches etc etc and I have a ton of Peak stuff and this looks good and I considered it but at the end of the day it's overkill, too big and not malleable. If we are honest with ourselves the best thing to use for toiletries and so on to carry stuff around is a Ziplock bag. LOL. Packing cubes are still the best way to carry clothing though.
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 4 года назад
😂 Well said. Zip lock bags are very useful but so "unsexy" 😂
@ThePenguin6
@ThePenguin6 4 года назад
I found mesh cosmetic/make up bags (sometimes also sold as pencil case) to be a good alternative to ziplock bags. They are not water resistant, but you get them cheap, they are light and they look better in my opinion. They might not hold for a lifetime, but since they aren't subject to much abuse, they hold up pretty well.

I’ve wanted to pick this up for a while now but I’m put off by how big it is. I think that’d it’d be a bit too tight in my cpl24 and could eat into the front compartment volume and basically make it unusable. Of course it has so much organization that I might not need that pocket anymore so I’m left a bit indifferent. If there was a 60% thick version I’d be sold.
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 4 года назад
Yeah, in a 20L ish bag it does take up a lot of space. And I would love to see a 60% version of the tech pouch. Good idea

I have one and no longer use it. I had much the same verdict as you. It's nicely made, and the handles are a really great feature for pulling it out the bag, or being able to hold it whilst you unzip and open. Couple of things that made me move away: 1) Bulk. Even when empty it's pretty bulky. You probably aren't going to save space by having 1 over multiple smaller ones. And your carry becomes less flexible as a result 2) The material gets grubby really quickly 3) I didn't like the organisation forcing me to pack in a certain way. Ultimately I found I could fit as much of what I carried in my AER Cable Kit or a Bellroy Classic with a smaller pouch for small items like sd cards etc

Thank you Bo. It is another great review. Sometimes reviewer forget about bulk and weight in their reviews. The balance of the weight/bulk, aesthetics, costs, functionality is so subjective but for example if travelling carry on only then having a good balance of weight, organisation, protection of contents, durability come into play and for many of us the cost is also important. I mean dyneema is super light but it is noisy, lacks support and is crazy costly.
@HumorousMaximus
@HumorousMaximus 4 года назад
It’s definitely too big. I immediately dismissed it after seeing the size of it. I don’t even know if I’d categorize this as a pouch, maybe a “tech packing cube”? This is not a tech-cube you can just toss into your bag as a “one more thing”, you need to deliberately plan for it and make sure you’ve got enough room for it. I’ll keep pushing their Field Pouch as the superior pouch. It’s ultra slim, and has a good amount of organization AND can expand to twice its size to accommodate all kinds of stuff. It’s my go-to pouch. Thanks for vid, Bo!

Almost 270 grams for a bulky pouch only seems quite a lot if you only have carry-on luggage for short distance travel. Some airlines have a weight limit for cabin luggage.

i personally love the tech pouch but i felt its over-engineered for my edc loadout and usage. if anyone is confident he/she can maximize the carrying capacity/organization of the tech pouch, then i reckon this is THE pouch to get. Else, there are better alternatives out there :D

Agreed with Bo in that this bag is a little too big. It's really good if you are going to go on a long trip for a week or so but for something that you're only going to go for a few days, it's a bit too big. If you are into one bag travel this bag will take up a lot of space in your bag. I honestly been using it a home to store all the cables, batteries, knives, pens, notebooks, and smaller items that I would take on the road or use for part of my EDC.
