I ate New York City's leftovers for a whole week in order to test out the food saving app "Too Good To Go." Watch what happens when I order two surprise bags a day from restaurants and grocery stores all over NYC. We'll take a peek into each bag to see if this app is a good deal...or too good to be true.
Too Good To Go is in 13 US cities and counting. To find food in your own neighborhood, check it out here: toogoodtogo.com/en-us
Be sure to let me know what's in your surprise bag in the comments!

I am from Denmark where the concept and the app was invented. Some of your experiences would be unheard of here - Danish businesses dont just close when they have an appointment with you and I dont think many would have tried to sell you a bag like the first vegetable bag with content that was definitely not too good to go. I have never seen produce in a Danish store even near to being that far gone. The outmost leaves of the salad or kale might be a little bit withered when the store discards it, but the core will still be perfectly fine underneath. The three most common bags are 1. Bread/cake - usually baked on the day you get the bag and cakes with wipped cream must be sold on the day they are made for health safety resons. 2. Vegetables and fruit that at worst is discarded for cosmetic reasons or tge store got a new delivery of produce and discards the old batch to make room for it. 3. food from buffets of all sorts since everthing perishible served on a buffet must be discarded at the end of the day for food safety reasons in Denmark. If the store isnt able to fulfill your order they are supposed to cancel it in the app at least 2 hours before the pickup time starts and you get an automatic full refund. The only bad experience I have had was when I got such a cancellation only 15 minutes before pickup time. When I asked the app provider why they didnt enforce the terms of sevice to the store they said they were sorry and gave me a voucher to use in the app for the amount I had paid in addition to getting the refund for the cancellation. If I get more than I can reasonably consume I share it with my neigbours.

Rotten food, closed stores, open store but nothing to pick up, order a day a head for "leftover" food -- Feel like many stores here are just abusing the system and trying to take advantage of people. It's definitely the app's responsibility to hold these bad actors accountable.

I used it for the first time today in London and there wasn't a ton of options in my area, but the place I went to gave me a bag full of food and the lady at the counter even let me take extra doughnuts because "it didn't fit in the bag". It's definitely limited in variety. Mostly baked goods and sandwiches, so I wouldn't want to live off of it, but it's definitely nice to have the option when you need a lot of calories for not a lot of money.

This app is awesome. I am here in NYC. Come order in the Bronx , the plates are heavy af, and one time the lady gave me 2 plates, I almost took her around the back and waxed them cheeks, but it was late cause this app makes you get the food very late at night. Sometimes its 1 am!

I tried this once in Long Island. The concept is you get $15 worth of food at the end of the night for $5. So, I bought a couple and all I got was burned out crap rice sold to me at above retail price.

I tried two places. Both in Bx. One in Parkchester and one in South Bx. I personally felt like I wasn't solving a food waste issue but rather annoying them. Given these two experiences, I uninstalled the app. I just felt like I was paying for the chance to have someone else pick what I would eat and the selection was okay but I'm not quite sure I would select it myself. I'm not sure if my expectations are too high or if I'm not choosing good locations.

There isn't much where I live in Marin (over the Golden Gate Bridge from S.F.), but the City seems to have quite a lot. Only Peet's Coffee in my immediate area. But I do work in San Francisco, so I'll find one close to where I work, pick it up when I get off and bring it home. I will let you know when I do. Love your channel!

One market chain in Missouri just got on in my area. So far I’m one good one bad. I will say it’s been fun. I would never drive far to get one of these bags, but I do order them from areas that I’m going to be in at the time of pick up. I got enough in one of those bags to feed my husband and I three meals plus dessert I consider that pretty good for $4.12. I enjoyed this video. Thanks for the review. I think if I was doing this for a week I would order from the grocery store on the first day, hoping to have some items to pull me through the bags that aren’t so terrific

I've tried Too Good To Go about 4 times now and in different areas of the city and I feel like I am getting exactly the amount of food I'm paying for. I went to a local pizzera last night right before closing, the order was 4.45 and I got 2 slices of pizza meanwhile the bar was still full of slices and they could've easily given me at least 4 slices. Serves have more layaway to use their discretion with this app so be prepared to waste your time.

I'm curious how the app is like on the vendor's side. I wonder if the reason is the vendors forgot to update app or maybe it is that smaller vendors dont really know how to use the app(if it is the brand marketers should do a better job training the people to use the app.Maybe the app can have more features to make it easier to update app)

Some employees dont know, but many people who come get the food are late or rude... So it makes making " a free plate" more annoying to the employee.
@someonetookmynick
@someonetookmynick Год назад
@@blackleague212 but it's not a free plate, it was paid for.. what does an employee care what the restaurant is charging for the meal? if anything, the restaurant making a tiny bit more money is a good thing (which hopefully can then be passed on to employee salaries)
@blackleague212
@blackleague212 Год назад
@@someonetookmynick You typed out some whimsical white people comment lmao, I dont really care about some "employees salaries" lmao is that a joke of some sort? This app is based off of 1 lucrative promotions via the app as a way to "sample" food. Thats also so cute, that you think restaurant workers make a "salary"... Thats really cute, you are young to type like that . Restaurant employees make an hourly wage. Most restaurants are capped at 5 meals max. At the highest price setting: $ 40 if they are lucky and have turnaround customers. average staff at a location here in new york is 20 or 30 employees, but lets be generous and say there are 6 employees. Thats 6 extra dollars, minus tax. No one cares about the money made here, its "practically" ( pay attention to the quotes) a free plate. That is what it is. Some restaurants dont even bother giving paid food away if you come late, because they can take the food home and eat it themselves, and let you get the refund within the app after 14 days. So unless you are counting pennies, or you think 4 or 5 bucks is actual "money", then its a free plate of food which most restaurant workers see as a hassle instead of a "meal saved from being tossed out". Here in nyc they dont care about that nonsense. They push clean plates of food and still throw out food you could eat. It is a promo for the restaurant where you get to sample the food. You probably live in some "village" lol or small town. Thats also cute. But this is new york, this app is just another way people can advertise their restaurants and the pennies made arent even noticed. I would know.

To me it seems this app would be better of coordinating donations or sales of all of this food to the less fortunate, rather than try and inconvenience those who can afford it to save a few bucks and eat random, possibly less healthy foods. Thanks for your review! A friend of mine just had a similar experience.

The idea is great! However, the problem with many of the participating suppliers is that they use tons of packaging material. See, for example, your cookies that were packed individually or in pairs in a huge plastic container. What is also a shame is that the app is not well suited to people with food intolerances. I have given away kilos of food because the dishes contained ingredients that I cannot tolerate.
@TheDrunkBridesmaid
@TheDrunkBridesmaid Год назад
The packaging issue is so true. I noticed the app encourages people to bring their own bag when picking up their items, but in my experience a lot of items are already wrapped or packaged before it's handed over. I think there is space to communicate a preference for minimal packaging when you come to pick up your items, but the default remains to offer food in standard takeout packaging. I see restaurants in NYC are taking some initiative after styrofoam take out containers and plastic bag use has been curbed, but it's still a huge problem! I hope Too Good To Go will continue to tackle that, as it seems in line with their mission to reduce waste. And yes, after filming this video, I tried out a vegan diet for many months, and this made it quite harder to use the app. I had to limit the stores I used the app with quite drastically to fit in line with a new dietary restriction. I can absolutely see how that was frustrating for you to buy and try to rescue food otherwise destined for the trash, only to not be able to eat it due to your dietary needs.
@samcasey5143
@samcasey5143 Год назад
@@TheDrunkBridesmaid They really should. People throwing away food they cannot eat and on top of that the packaging material, would counteract the whole idea behind the app.

Kinda dissapointed you didnt do this video with a real eater... This app will show you MANY delicious restaurants that serve chicken, goat, pork... If you come to the Bronx, most of the plates are very heavy. I got a free soda once. And a free plate another time. Also places in brooklyn serve large plates! Omg, the fun ( Challenge) part of this app is actually finding the restaurant and making it on time. Sometimes you have to go early or the place will be closed. It happens. Its worth the run around at least for NYC. I checked some dead zones around the COUNTRY, sad to see this app doesnt work out there.

Some of the establishments really give you the FRESH left-over food. Bakery establishments make the pastries ALMOST every day. Never buy from cafe establishments. A lot of their pastries are from the factory. Whatever pastries you got are those few days old sitting in the display refrigerators. Also stay away from grocery stores and regular restaurants (except buffer style establishments). Just imagine the regular restaurants offer you the too good to go offers. Where do the restaurants get their left-over food? Just Imagine...😀

Yes, I was bummed out that a few times I was throwing away money on food that was already inedible or questionable - especially when I got that bag of produce that included some rotten veggies and fruit. It felt like a waste of not only my money, but the time it took to arrange for and pick up the bag. That's definitely a risk (and in my opinion a flaw) of using the Too Good To Go app. I filmed this vid about 10 months ago, and I do still use the app and find value in it. Still, my absolute favorite Too Good To Go partner is Juice Press, it's a great value and every time I go there I get food that has not yet met or passed it's best by date, and it's high quality food. I think you need a stomach for adventure to try this app out 😂

Covid is not an excuse for businesses to close early without a notice! And even if they need to close early, letting the app know that they're closing early is such a simple task. Also I don't know what you mean by "some weird vegan diet", I'm pretty sure it's just called "vegan diet" and there's nothing "weird" about that!
