@HerveySchmervy I'd be curious to know what sales figures you're referencing, as my understanding is that its sales are only a fraction of its competitors. It is only popular in the academic world and among certain hardcore laymen.

@@sorenpx by hot cakes I meant better than the other 2. Unfortunately the NASB20 abandons the literal only point it was made because it wasn't selling well over it's competitors so they comprimised their philosophy...really shows us they only are in it for the money and not the message

@@HerveyShmervy Okay, I see. I do know that, overall, the NASB is not a good seller. This was never made more apparent to me than when I went looking for an NASB study Bible and realized I had very little to choose from (it was literally something like four Bibles). Regarding Lockman abandoning their mission of literalism, from what they've said, the NASB 95 will continue on and will still be made available, so perhaps we should think of it less as them abandoning their mission and more as them simply adding a new product to compete in the market of more dynamic translations.

Outstanding comment, my brother in Christ. 👏👏 I agree with you. Having all these translations is perfectly fine, as all the mainstream ones say pretty much the same thing. This means we have the good fortune to choose the one that speaks most loudly to us. Like you, i own most of the mainstream translations, both in e-book and hard form. My favourite is the ESV but i use all the others at various times for various reasons, including the fantastic NIV. We are spoilt for choice and should rejoice in our good fortune.

The NASB is way too wooden in its translation. I used it for years, but have since moved to the NIV. I have come to really respect the amount of scholarship that has gone into the NIV over the years. No translation is fully formal, each on a spectrum from more formal to less formal. The NIV is a really good mediating translation between the two, on the one hand maintaining readability while on the other staying true to the form of the text. For example, the NASB says in Amos 4:6 that the Lord gave the people "cleanness of teeth." Well, that's word-for-word what the Hebrew says, but that expression is actually a Hebrew idiom referring to famine, not dental hygiene. Therefore, the NIV says, "empty stomachs." If you were to go to the UN and listen to the translators, not one of them would be translating word-for-word because idioms don't have the same meanings between different languages. In Spanish there's an idiom, "No tener pelos en la lengua" (word for word, "not to have hairs on the tongue"), but it means, to speak your mind, or to use an English idiom, to give it to me straight. 2 Samuel 18:25 in the NKJV says, "there is news in his mouth" which is a Hebrew idiom for have good news, the NIV saying, "he must have good news."

NASB is wooden compared to the NIV... then again, NIV is wooden compared to the NLT, which is wooden compared to the Message.

Hello, just bought the NASB1977 from AMG Publishing. This is IMO the BEST NASB ever and retains much of the beloved KJV, above all in the Psalms as well in the Prayers! I would no more use other editions than the aforementioned edition. Every translation has its fans and this is fine. The NASB 2020 has also its position and is the "easiest of all the NASB to read! Amen

My Key Word Study Hebrew Greek NASB 77 bible says, my mind instructs me, with a foot note showing the root word for mind is kidneys, which simply means the inner man. Kudos to Key Word Study Bible!!

I wouldn't be so quick to drop my guard around the P.C. police. They don't work by changing things overnight, but rather, they slowly and gradually get the tip of the camel's nose into the tent, and then the rest inch by inch. Before you know it, you have an entire camel in your tent, while wondering to yourself "How did this entire thing even get in here?" This is pretty much the story of every Mainline Protestant denomination that has shifted to theological liberalism in a nutshell. I remember going through a "say it ain't so!" denial period with the NIV2011, and trying to defend some of it's more questionable changes. What knocked me out of this denial was when I read one of the translators, roughly paraphrased from my memory, saying something to the effect of: "One of our major goals in this translation was to create a compromise between complimentarians and egalitarians so as to not alienate either party. " Said translator might as well have said: "Well, we don't want to alienate Biblical Christians or Gnostics; we've got to try to make a translation that pleases both." As for getting the Word of God into everyone's hands by any means necessary: who you attract is tied to your methodology. If the only way a person is going to step foot in your church is via laser light shows, or prosperity promises for their itching ears, they're probably not interested in the gospel. In the same way, if someone is not going to pick up a translation unless it specifically caters to their preferred worldly agenda, they're probably not interested in the gospel.

@@ashenhorse6218 and THAT is not a Christ-like response either. A little self-humility and respect for another's view (even if you disagree) would indicate some level of competency at the purpose of Mt. 28.

@@callending I am not able to express my opinion in any other way if honesty is my main aim. With all humility, I still see the problem with **some** Christians, like the commentator above. The toxicity of self righteousness. And the arrogance! The pride of own convictions! Suspicions of the social agenda of others, surpassing any compassion for those who do not speak English as their first language, for example! Many can not see the world beyond their own gold fish parameters and comfort zone. The ethnocentric bias in assuming that the English speaking world is the centre of all existence. Level of competency at the purpose of Mt 28 indeed!

@Ashen Horse I also have little patience with people who believe they are the TRUE believers and anyone else who doesn't think or act like they do is deceived or a false teacher or whatever. It grows very tiresome.

@Warrior's Grace Ministry In several instances in NASB95 they add notes that start with "Lit." followed by what literally was written. And I am "why don't they put THIS in the main text and let the note as what would mean to us modern readers".

I agree... It is, in large part simple economics... However, I believe there will come a time when people who buy Binlrs will get tired of having to “update” every few years... and will either change to a more stable translation, or just keep..and use... the Bible they have. My friend’s mom actually duct taped her Bible together, rather than buy a new one.. BTW.. No matter what translatiin I am reading... The 23rd Psalm. is what I hear...and say, I believe most people wioo say “I shall not want”, and I thunk that is a good thing.

@@sandygrogg1203 I have purchased a few modern translations but can’t keep up with all the updates & translations that are available these days. I’m simply not going to purchase any more because I don’t have enough storage space in my condo & because I feel I already have enough. I read & memorize the KJV because it’s the one I grew up with & love, I have read the entire ESV, & I have the NASB-77, the NASB-95, the HCSB & the CSB. I have a few more translations, that I got for free, on my Kindle & on some iPhone bible apps.

YOU and I may not need or want a middle school reading level bible but there are an awful lot of people out there who struggle even with that level. It's more an indictment of our educational system in this country.

I have an NRSV (Protestant canon) and it's not a bad translation. However, I would not want to use it as my only translation. Personally, I prefer the NASB over all others, though I cross-reference several different translations using the YouVersion app.

That's one of the many reasons that also got me to move away from the esv. I went back to the NKJV seeing they don't update it.

@@BloodBoughtMinistries To be fair, the ESV updates tend to be minor and incremental, rather than dramatic overhauls. I compared a 2007 to a 2011 update, and if you just flip around to random pages to compare, you will not be able to tell a difference. A difference will only be detectable if you actively hunt down the verses that are listed as changed. In other words, individuals with 2001, 2007, 2011 and 2016 versions of the ESV can follow along to the same Bible study very easily without being lost whatsoever.

I can't reply to everyone but at least I will reply to you because I too always go with the KJV but will now get the LSB if only as a definitive test for the next 50 years, if He should tarry.. I hope you will take the time to read through me just copying my letter to a Bible study friend. I will try to edit it some..... "I remember when I realized how new styles DRIVE the urge to change your wardrobe. I was trying to keep this in mind during discussions about the updating of the NASB. I was disappointed to find that many people did not accept some of the "updates" when NASB went from the 1973 edition to the 1995 edition but they lived with it. Which is to say that there were things that they wished had NOT been changed. And now that the 2020 NASB is coming out there are quite a few MORE things that that wish were not being changed. These two lists are the things that John MacArthur and his fellow Master's doctors of theology (etc) are talking about when they say that the "Legacy" Standard Bible is more about what they want to hold on to than what they would or would not have wished to update. As the NEW NASB was coming out, for often political correctness reasons, I'm glad they offered John MacArthur the opportunity to come up with his own NEW one. because, as John explains it, "Even though you may love to just keep your old '73 or even your old '95, pretty soon they will no longer be readily available as they will not keep printing them" Ah, NOW the update with 'keeping the good old" starts making sense and also "clawing back" from the changes that were not good when they updated the '73 edition.... and also an opportunity to update, what WE had noticed along the way in our extensive language studies, etc. that WE would have put in the '95 update, AND what we would have come to have liked to have in an update from the '95. Remember when we heard that in the olden days that the Bible was used as the textbook for teaching children. I think about it now, with my vocabulary, though not excellent, is pretty good. I realized the gap when, one time in Texas, I asked a high school student if he wanted to order a beverage, and he said, "What's a beverage?" NOW I'm sure that the majority of 20-somethings don't know the meaning of, say: bestow, pique (they write peek or peak), mull over, perhaps ponder, wreak (illustrated by how often journalists say wreck havoc, and I'm surprised they've retained use of the word havoc - although they may not have a particular good concept of its meaning lol). I could go on and on but I am straining my brain and I'm sure you get my point and, I'm sure you readily agree that, as vocabulary is LOST to the young, that the complexities and nuances, much less the beauty of language with depth, so is the understanding of, like, the King James Version. These kids don''t know the reverence implied with the Thees and Thous- so we say you. I have gone on to mull over that it should come as no surprise that they find no particular need to teach cursive, and even math when they say, because of computers, that just getting the general ballpark figure shows a comprehension of the problem and its answer. Often testing is based on the ballpark figures. But how can we be a party to letting the original meaning of the inspired word of God be slipping away entirely, just for readability's sake. I am so glad that you would be one who would wish to retain the deepest study of the Greek and the Latin and the Hebrew, if only as a reference Bible. I'm quite sure you will have realized that, at this point, the finished works is just the NT and Psalms and Proverbs, but they wanted to get this out, if only to educate the Bible buying public and to keep the people who would passionately care about retaining old truth, would not be investing in the "other" "New" NASB." [My note - I'm not totally sure it is only the NT and Ps. and Prov. Someone correct me if that is not the case but I believe John M was only offered the opportunity in March and he does want to het this one out there.]

I wasn't sure if you were joking or serious, but I can see now that you were indeed serious. Ouch! We don't need that! The ASV has already been updated anyway, and it's called the World English Bible, and it's available for free.

You do know the Textus Receptus was a Greek manuscript translated from the KJV and not the other way around...

@@sorenpx I think he’s getting that because the TR differs slightly from the majority of the majority text. But that is most definitely wrong. It is just a old, being limited with what they had, compilation of the Majority text.

NIV84 was only "officially" updated in 2011, so just once in 27 years. However, they did release the NIVr, NIVUK, and TNIV during that time as trial balloons to see how they sold, and they all bombed. There is essentially no difference other than spelling between the NIVUK and TNIV, and essentially no difference between the TNIV and NIV2011, other than marketing. What is striking about NIV2011 and NIV84 is the market Blackout Biblica did with NIV84. They pulled all of the other versions off the market, to include buying back all of them from sellers, and pulling all licenses from online resources. If you have an NIV84, and especially an electronic version, count yourself blessed as you can't get it anymore. The heavy handed blackout of NIV84 by Biblica is "woke" driven, and just that alone should give Believers pause about using the NIV2011. NASB, on the other hand, you can still get a brand new NASB77 from AMG publishers, and it's everywhere online. Lockman has nothing to hide and no agenda.

You don't have to care about feminism to know that translating "adelphoi" as "brothers and sisters" can lead to greater clarity regarding the author's meaning. Was he only addressing the male members of the congregation or both?

2020 is a great translation and is a very good upgrade of the 95. 2020 is worlds better than the lsb.

I'll stick with the NKJV but I never planned on reading the nasb.

As a Protestant the KJV is definitely not held up like that. It might be in some small cultic groups but it is just as every other translation, a translation. We do hold the Masoretic text and Greek NT’s in high regard though.
