About Frau Betzler being afraid that her son will report her, it happened sometimes. When parents expressed disagreement with something about Hitler youth (their teen daughters getting pregnant under dubious circumstances for example), the kids would sometimes report them, even if the parents' concerns were 100% legitimate
@nem447

Exactly...kids were taught the party comes first, hence the parents were afraid to say anything negative to their kids about them, due to the obvious consequences if the party found out.

Elsa is the opposite of the meek hidden jewish character typically portrayed in movies. She’s angry, funny, crafty and kind. She’s a person. So yes, she scares him instead of begging for her life at first. It’s refreshing for me to see a character that is not just beaten down and scared, but a fully formed and multifaceted character.

Watching somebody react to Sam Rockwell during the interrogation scene is heartbreaking. Because somebody who has already watched the movie knows, that his mother is already dead. The reason they are there is to search his home after she was hanged. That’s why Sam Rockwell brought his mothers bike back. He was coming to make sure that the boy was OK. 💔💔💔

Not sure if you remotely caught the fact that Rockwell’s character was a gay man and the other guy was his partner, so it explains why he covered for jojo and the girl, as well as his very flamboyant outfit at the end. They focused so much on the mother’s shoes throughout, to deliver the impact of her being hung. Such an amazing movie!!

A couple more subtle things about the captain, he had no real reason (from an official standpoint) to go to Jojo's house when the Gestapo visited. He also arrived at the house on the mother's bike so at the very least she had been arrested at that point (probably caught distributing those messages). As for best performance, hey it's got to be Yorkie amirite?

Taika Waititi wrote the script and won an Oscar for adapted screenplay, but the book is very different (no imaginary Hitler, Jojo is older and no comedy and other differences). I think this movie is one of the best movie about holocaust ever made and become better and better every time I watch it. Love every character and love how Hitler becomes scarier when Jojo opens his eyes about Jews. I reccomand to watch some of the interview Taika made for the film, he tells how his mother introduced him to the book and how it was for him to play Hitler as a maori and a jew (and how creepy he felt to be dressed like Hitler while he was directing the movie), Taika's interview are always so much fun. The Gestapo came to Jojo's house because they had arrested and hanged his mother, and they would usually go to those people's house in case there were more accomplices or they were hiding Jews (which was common for those against the Reich). That's why they came to the house, Yorki didn't tell them anything. And Captain K showed up during the Gestapo search because he had seen that Jojo's mom had been hanged, and came to check on him. It's hinted all throughout the movie that he's actually a gay man (which nazis were killing or sending to extermination camps) and was actually one of those who were working against the nazis, like Jojo's mom. That's why he voluntarily did a sh*t job at training Hitler youth while pretending to be a nazi to hide the fact he was gay, that's why he told Jojo his mom was an actually good person, and that's also one of the reasons he rushed to the house when he saw Jojo's mom was hanged, he most likely knew she was hiding a Jew. That explains also why he was the one to "check her identity". He knew that the sister was dead, hence his line "you need a new picture, you look like a ghost in this one", and that's also the reason why he said the birth date was correct although he was looking at a clearly different one. I think he was a pretty cool character.

I also love that it was made from Jojo's point of view like when it starts it's so incredibly colorful, when he meets "the jew" she comes out like it was a horror movie because he has been taught jews are monsters, the way the color starts becoming more desaturated as his childhood ideology falls away and he starts seeing and understanding reality more.

Not everything can be award winning, but something award winning can come from everything. Crafting the playlist into the right tone, message and emotion takes a lot of skill. To your question about how many kids were in the HJ or similar groups... nearly 98% of all children in germany. Even though they weren't forced to join the HJ ( not directly anyway more indirectly from their neighbors and friends, it was suspicious not to send your child to the HJ). parents still sent their children to the HJ because they saw that as an opportunity for their children to connect and get more chances to gain different experiences. You could compare them to the boy scouts of today, just not with the same ideology.
@cloudyh6800
@cloudyh6800 2 года назад
Before 1936 maybe. After (latest by 1939), it was the law for children from the age of 10, but as early as 6yo, to join the Hitlerjugend/BDM/Jungvolk/Jungmädelbund and there could be sanctions/punishments if people didn't abide. Obviously there were lots of kids keen to join, esp. as all other youth organisations were banned. But it wasn't voluntary. Hitler wanted the young indoctrinated at an impressionable age, as this movie rightly and sadly demonstrates.

I hope you have time to rewatch the movie. It is worth it, you will pick up so much more, that will lead you to see somethings differently. As others have said, the German Shepard scene makes it clear that Capt. K and Freddie are lovers. How did they end up fighting for a country that wants to kill all homosexuals? Survival. What else could they do? They decided to hide in plain sight. But by 1945 they were worn out and hopeless. Others had joined the resistance, and most died for it, but maybe they should have to. I think that might be their story. Captain K is holding Freddie’s cape at the end when he is dragged off.

I went to film school in the 1980s, and my teacher, Manny Kirchheimer, showed us his documentary (later turned into a book), We Were So Beloved, which was about being Jewish and living in Nazi Germany before the war. There's an interview with an old man remembering wanting to join the Hitler Youth, like Jojo, when he was a boy. Besides being taught to be Nazis, they were doing all this cool stuff, like camping, all the things that boys love to do. But he couldn't because he was Jewish. It was a very painful memory for him to think about how angry he was with his parents, and yelling at them for "ruining his life" because they were Jewish and he could never be a Nazi... the indoctrination and pressure were that great. His parents saw the writing on the wall and escaped to America which is why he survived to tell his story.

The child abandonment and poverty in these stages of war and post war in Germany was* very real. My partner's grandparents were Jojo's age and a little older in Germany. Their stories are eerily similar except the grandfather was drafted at 13 (very much like Yorkie) in the last year of the war because Germany was running out of people and the grandmother's entire town was overtaken by the Russians. She was also in the Hitlerjugand like Jojo and actually buried her medals. As she escaped with her siblings, they had to forage and beg for food from other Germans. The thing about this movie is even the satire is eerily accurate. Jojo's imaginary friend is really the propaganda of the Third Reich through the lenz of what Jojo understands and his comments on being deformed are jokes but in Germany, looks were extremely important as were abilities. Being able-bodied meant that you could fully be useful to the fatherland and that's why Captain K was demoted even though he was an amazing shot--because being partially blind, he wasn't considered to be fully-bodied to support the regime in combat. That's why Jojo is devastated about the scars--he even says now he won't be able to be in Hitler's personal guard and he's honestly right (this is shown by the Gestapo's comments and also parroted back about Jojo's own misguided self-perceptions about being ugly when Hitler calls him that). One thing that I love about the film is that this physical barrier immediately weakens Jojo's affiliation with the party on a visual level. Whereas before he could kind of pretend to be all on-board (even with the book burning and the violence) as long as he wasn't called out, after the injury--he cannot hide his difference from who he is to what the party prioritizes and represents. As the story continues, as Jojo learns through exposure to Elsa, seeing his mother's actions, and being around Captain K--he actually becomes more comfortable with himself because he sees how twisted and wrong the nazi regime is. In the end, he looks in the mirror at his scarred face and it's the first time he looks at himself as a whole--right in the eyes--and doesn't comment on being ugly or deformed but fully accepts himself and fully accepts Elsa's right to freedom as he's about to open the door and let her go. Amazing storytelling. Your thoughts about the tracing of horrible actions/cruelty being traced to fear and misunderstanding and pain was so insightful and I completely agree. Those scenes are very tough to watch but I think they needed to happen. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and journey with this film. I'm so happy that you connected with it and through your reaction are sharing its nuance and importance. The movie did well but received a lot of bad press from people who deliberately didn't understand satire and its incredible importance of not glorifying nazism and antisemitism so a lot of people mistakenly think it is pro-nazi or doesn't take what happened seriously. :( *edits for final paragraph and punctuation* :)

There was review about this movie compared to the book, I forget who did it and what it was called, but I remember the substance. The book Jojo was a full grown teenager or in his early 20s in the book and he was not a good person. And the Jewish girl and their “romance”, through that out the window. Jojo psychologically abused her into believing the Nazis won the war. She was basically his sex slave. Taika Watiti said he vaguely remembered the synopsis of the book and based the screenplay of his recollections. This is movie is basically the “Disney Treatment” for a pretty depressing book. Stick with the movie. The author even gave Watiti his blessing.

It's pretty accurate, and the kids were so brainwashed they would tell on their parents if they hid people or even just spoke badly about the regime. Sam Rockwell's and Alfie Allen's characters were actually gay and not nazis at all, which is why they sported these pink triangles in the final battle scene.

In a word this film is brilliant, and I don't often use that word when talking about a movie - 2001 would be another, if in an entirely different vein. Also you are right that a part of the brilliance is the easy way it glides between Python-esque humor and Diary of Anne Frank dread.

Idk if anyone else has mentioned it but if you haven’t seen The Boy in the Striped Pajamas - you should react to it (or watch it on your own). It is the first major role Asa Butterfield got. It’s based on the book of the same name. The author wrote it as an entry point to be able to talk about the holocaust with kids. So I personally found the story amazing. So yeah.. anyways… I loved Jojo Rabbit, glad to see you enjoyed it.

For the kid being left alone after they killed his mother, they didn't care. Many children lost their parents and had to fend for themselves. Some had relatives or neighbors who took them in, but some were alone, too. Jewish children like Elsa were also hidden by German people. And yes, some children who were in the Hitler Youth (it was mandatory at some point) would turn in their own parents, sometimes even just for criticizing the regime.

I think it's intentionally the perspective the movie takes. If you're thinking in terms of historical context it's very different. Elsa has a horror villain entrance and you're meant to fear her like jojo.
@Paddywackles96
@Paddywackles96 2 года назад
@@summer6100 I'd get that if it were made for children but it's a movie made for adults who are well aware of morality... yes we are supposed to recognize that Jojo finds her scary, but I don't think the intent was for US to find her scary because it's assumed we understand that people used to hide Jewish folks. And it's assumed we know she is trying to scare him, hence the little "finger walk" she does down the banister.

Such a great film. I was pressured to not see this film when it came out because people had notions from the trailer that it was making light of a very dark historical event. So glad I didn’t listen to them and showing this movie to all my family and friends has been such a worthy experience. Taika’s story telling is so unique. He said in an interview that he always intended to use humor to dismantle the regimes built on tolerance and hate. He also said it was his only project that he wrote beginning to end, no stops, no adjustments, no second guessing. And he set it aside for 6 years while he worked on other projects. Then came back to it and was like: yep, still doing it. Truly a living legend.

Captain K never wears his Nazi uniform properly - it always looks like he is openly disrespecting it. He is also very sarcastic when he talks about Germany's prospects for winning the war. He never spreads propaganda about the Jews - while Rebel Wilson is teaching hatred he just stands back getting drunk. He openly contradicts Wilson's propaganda several times throughout the movie. And he gets demoted twice under Nazi rule but never tries to climb back to his previous station. And obviously he is a closet gay and lies to protect a hidden jew. Much like Jojo's mother, he seems to love his country but hates the Nazi party. This character is incredibly well written IMO.

At some point, during the last years of the war, it was mandatory for all kids to join, and they were taught the nazi ideology about "inferior races" at school, right from the start. The movie is set in 1944, Jojo would have been born in 1934. Many kids told on their parents, even for only disagreeing with the regime. The Gestapo would come to get them and they were never seen again. It's also possible nobody knew Inge had died, it was complete chaos and many civilians died every day during the bombings. When both parents died, kids were left on their own, it happened often. Some stories of people who had hidden Jewish children only come out now. After the war, people wouldn't talk about things that happened during the war for decades, and some things were only discovered after their deaths in the 1990s, especially after the Reunification because the former eastern Germany had lots of files about many people. And like Captain K., many people had to pretend to play along for fear of getting killed. Hitler had lots of his own officers executed because they didn't agree with him anymore, especially after the Operation Valkyrie.

9:26 he's also one of the only ones! That's part of why Taika Waititi has him in here like this! In most films, all we ever see of him is in old footage, at the height of his power. By turning him into a figment of a boys imagination, it makes him look like the pathetic man he actually was.

There’s a theory where Captain K was actually in the same rebel group as Jojo’s mom. He said earlier in the film that he got demoted because of an accident, now that accident could’ve been an accident OR that he was gay & someone found out so he got demoted. That could’ve been 1 of the reasons why he joined the rebel group. In 18:56 he also insists Jojo to tell him straight away if he ever saw a Jew. 32:25: Captain K starts barging in as if to tell Jojo to hide the Jew/take the Jew to another safe place. Jojo’s mom probably told him about the Jew. Well anyway, that’s a theory.

THOR, did you NOTICE that they are playing THE BEATLES GERMAN VERSION of "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" ("KOM GIB MIR DEINE HAND") at the beginning over the scenes of German's going crazy over Hitler? The BEATLES also recorded "SHE LOVES YOU" ("SIE LEIBT DICH") in GERMAN in 1964. They NOW can BOTH be found on The BEATLES "PAST MASTERS VOL. 1" CD. which contains singles that were never on any of their albums. There is also a "PAST MASTERS VOL. 2" that has MORE Beatles's singles that were never included on any of their albums. I was STUNNED when I first watched JO JO RABBIT on TV, when they started playing it! SEEMS I am THE ONLY one of all the reactors I have seen that even NOTICED it was a BEATLES song, I thought they would at LEAST recognize the TUNE. LOL

Such a great emotional yet comedic take and was done very well. Great work from all actors and the director. This 1 hit me with the ups n downs so much respect from an artist perspective. I lost my mother at a young age through trauma and they definitely depicted the shock of sudden loss and explained how you carry on not only that but as a mother I am a lot like scarlet Johansson's character so it highlighted how important I am to my son and how strong the bonding connection is he can use for his future. I never had the chance to have that with my mum very Powerful movie . Lol I looked up behind the scenes stuff too very interesting 😁

How perfect is comparing Beatlemania to the throngs adoring Hitler. That was most likely real footage to 'I Want to Hold Your Hand". The BEATLES also recorded "SHE LOVES YOU" ("SIE LIEBT DICH") in GERMAN as well. They were both released as a single and then showed up many years later on "THE PAST MASTERS VOL. 1 " album CD which contain all the singles that were never on any album (same with "PAST MASTERS VOL. 2")

Steven Merchant's character gives hints about Rosie's capture and how she was caught. "She's very busy" "Is she?" god awful gloating grin. Then when he leaves "That reminds me. We much be on our way. We left that guy hanging." Another awful inside joke grin. They caught his dad. That lead to them discovering that both him and Rosie were in the resistance. Jojo... Is an orphan. His dad isn't coming home. Also they didn't care about caring for jojo as an orphan, because they were there to dispatch jojo, as well. Captain K and Freddy messed up those plans. Which is why merchant's character gave him that hovering glare. He wasn't suspicious. Captain K was pretty much like Jojo's troupe leader and had a valid excuse to be there. He was trying to intimidate him and get his to leave.

Agree it was such a good performance.T hought it was one of Scarlett's better performances. She got nominated for an Oscar and well deserved. My favorite parts were the winking scene,the dinner scene with JoJo and his mom.The emotion of when he finds his mom hanging was so well done,that kid had me crying. And so shocking,didn't see that coming. Also loved when Sam Rockwell comforts JoJo at the end. Perfect film to me. Also the actress who plays Elsa was also great and underrated(Thomasin McKenzie) If you want to watch another good film with her in it, please check out Leave No Trace.

Be a Hero! Jojo and Elsa are dancing to 'Heroes sung by David Bowie in German. The song was from an album recorded in Berlin. The lyrics hadn't been written until the record producer and his new German girlfriend, a German jazz singer, showed Bowie a photograph they'd taken of a couple kissing at the Berlin Wall. Bowie imagined a story of a couple separated by the Wall. The song is a fitting and ironic compliment to The Beatles song at the beginning of the film. '

Bit of a delay in this input but, some history... the concentration camps were full of parents turned in by their nazi indoctrinated children; this is the end of the war, Germany is running out of everything including soldiers, hence the children and civilians fighting at the end; the gibbet in the town square would have had new people hanging almost daily, to increase the terror in the population; you were more worried about Elsa's mean treatment of Jojo, but most everyone in the country is trying to kill her, she might be a bit touchy; and no one comes to take care of Jojo because the orphanages are overstuffed and everyone (but the Gestapo, who have to keep the local terror going) are off fighting or dead; lastly, people don't KNOW Jojo's real sister is dead because at the end of the war people disappeared all the time. It was total chaos and people tried to live as normally as they could but didn't ask too many questions because questions, like so much else, could have you hanging in the the town square. Really enjoyed your reaction! Hope some of this was helpful.
